Official Seattle information thread Updated 5/28/2014-Oso update

Nicolepa--

Bunless--Gosh, I hope they're not really "harvesting muscles" in Coupeville. Sounds kinda creepy. LOL As long as you meant "mussels", then it's all good. :thumbsup2 Whidbey Island looks beautiful-- can't wait to see it! :boat:

ohhhhh auto-correct

The MUSSELS are the famous Penn Cove mussels. Tragically, there was a boat that sunk in the cove a few weeks ago (or was it months at this point), and the harvesting of the mussels has been put on hold for a while.

For those cruising the first week in July, if you are in town on the Saturday before your cruise, the Seattle Symphony (located right in downtown Seattle at Benaroya Hall) is putting on a Disney in Concert musical selection. It sounds fabulous and surely would get you in the mood to cruise! And, btw, the symphony (especially the afternoon performance) in Seattle is a fairly casual affair.

What time are the concerts?
We fly in on Saturday and didn't plan anything because to us it will feel relatively late, but Seattle time will still be early evening.

Anyone care to comment on the Woodland Zoo and the place that gives Chocolate Tour (I forgot the name)?
I have a 12 yo. We will have 3 days pre-cruise
Thanks!

I might be biased since I grew up here, but I love the Woodland Park Zoo. My kids love it, especially the penguin, primates and northern trails exhibits. If you can catch the bears when they're awake they're really fun to watch.

I think the chocolate tour is this one:

I've never done it myself but I've heard it's great.

We *love* the Woodland Park Zoo!! Really, really love it! It is a fabulous place to spend a day (or a large portion of a day). There also is a beautiful rose garden outside the zoo that you can visit for free. Green Lake is located in the same area of Seattle as the Zoo and it is a fun place to go and visit--you can rent peddle boats and bicycles there.

I have not done the tour, I've heard of it but don't actually know anyone who has done it. I'm another native who loves our zoo! I've been to many others and still absolutely love ours.

If you do go, just down the street is a classic Seattle burger place, the Red Mill.

YUM!

I agree, espeically the northern trail area!!!

The rose garden is a must if you go to the zoo, right next door.

The zoo is wonderful. All my kids ask to go there several times a year (4, 10, 12). My grandfather is the Docent and major contributor to the Chyenne Mt. Zoo in Colorado and he loves the Woodland Park Zoo.

I don't know if you are thinking of the tour already mentioned or Theo Chocolates. We've done the tour at Theo Chocolates and we really enjoyed it for the price ($8 or $9) you eat at least that much in chocolate. ;-)

We love the Woodland Park Zoo--on a nice day. Especially the penguins.

Never done the chocolate tour--unfortunately, both DH and DD are not supposed to have much sugar.

.

The Mexican place across the street, El Chubacabra, is pretty amazing too. My favorite place for Pasole.

Love the zoo, we've been members for years and are zoo parents to the bears!

Thank you so much!!!!! We will definitely add it to our list. Crossing fingers for nice weather.
I was talking about Theo Chocolates. The other one looks amazing but we will save our overindulging for when we get on the ship.
Thanks also for the restaurant recommendations!

Speaking of restaurants we really liked the Crab Pot in Seattle down by the cruise terminal.

The Crab Pot is fun, but I always want to recommend a non-chain restaurant to eat at when it comes to Seattle. For the same price you can get food that is some of the best in the world.

I have a very proper older aunt who visited us and wanted to go to a seafood restaurant. We tried to tell her that you could go into any local establishment and get great fish, it didn't need to be seafood specific. She insisted--and she was being a bit of a pain that week anyway... so we took her to the Crab Pot. The look on her face when the food was dumbed on the table into a pile was priceless.

For those staying at the Edgewater Hotel, there is an amazing place called Local 360. Its a block down and three blocks over. Lots of foods kids will like (comfort food), but elevated dining for parents. All of the food comes from sources no more than 360 miles away, even the sodas. Try the PB&J BonBons. If mom and dad want a nice meal, but need something the kids will like, this is a great place. Also, amazing happy hour.
Also on 1st just north of the market is Ohana, for Hawaiian food and Spur Gastropub.
In the market is Japanese Gourmet, Steelhead Diner, Falafel King (best in Seattle), and many, many walk up stands. The food in the walk up stands will be better than any chain place you will ever go to.
If you're willing to walk another block or two, go to 2nd Ave to Pinxto (my favorite Spanish tapas in town, happy hour and dinner only), Mama's Mexican Kitchen (a locals favorite), Cafe Casbah (counter service sandwiches, great espresso), and for those 21 or older--the great Seattle institution of Shorty's (pinball and booze). A little further down is the Marrakesh (traditional Moroccan dining, local favorite for birthday parties, dinner reservations only).

I'm trying to decide if I should share my favorite hole in the wall oyster bar or not.

For coffee, take a picture at Starbucks, but go to a place like Local Color which is less than a block away. The coffee is better, and the people who own it are great. For tea, go to The Crumpet Shop, also in the market, also a great family who own and run it.

I also keep meaning to make a couple of recommendations for kids who are picky eaters. If they like hot pockets, see if you can get them to have Piroshkys (available at Piroshky! Piroshky!) or Humbow (at Mee Sum Pastry). Both are available in the market at walk up stands on the main drag through the market.

Can you order only crab? That is DS's favorite. DH won't eat seafood, is there something else on the menu?

There's a lot of different seafood on the menu, and there's also burgers and the like. No idea if they are any good.
They are known for boils. It's something a lot of kids like because you get to eat with your hands from a big pile on the table. They give you bibs, a mallet, and a lot of napkins. It's good, it's fun, but there's a lot better seafood in town. You go more for the experience than the taste.

DS and DD want the experience, but they will only eat crab. That is why I was wondering if you could get crab only, otherwise a lot of the other seafood will go to waste.

Oh! they only eat crab, I misunderstood. I thought you were more asking about if you could get something that wasn't seafood.
Yes, they have crab only boils. But, it is boiled with potatoes, corn, and seasoning.

I love the Theo Chocolate tour. My extended family is full of chocoholics, so whenever they're visiting from out-of-town, we always make it a point to take the tour. Even if you don't take the tour, the store is full of free samples. In previous years, their tours often filled up during the summer, but I see on their website that they've added more tours this year to accommodate everybody. Still, it might be worthwhile to make a reservation.

Speaking of the zoo and chocolate, there's a great new pie place across the street from the zoo that has the most amazing Mexican Chocolate Pie. Their other pies are great, too. It's called A La Mode Pies and it's at 5821 Phinney Ave N, across from the northwest corner of the zoo.
