OFFICIAL JULY 2009 THREAD!!! (Part 2) It's here!!

I understand that, during summer vacation my son has to read a book, and do a power point presentation on it and a report. My son is just 11 years old.

I don't even know how to do a power point presentation. Lois

I understand that, during summer vacation my son has to read a book, and do a power point presentation on it and a report. My son is just 11 years old.

That's crazy. What grade is he in? My DS is upset that I have made him read over the Summer, practice typing, and play a math program to help him with his facts. I don't know how to do Power Point and was telling DH and mentioned how a lot of people don't even have it.

WOW! I can't believe that. What if parents don't have power point?

We get a lot of snow days here, for very little snow. One year, a 16 year old died in a car wreck driving home from school in the snow. They are VERY cautious now.

We go 180 days, 200 for teachers. In fact, I started back last week, kids start Wednesday. We get Labor Day, Veteran's Day, MLK day, 2 1/2 days at Thanksgiving, 2 weeks at Christmas, Good Friday, then Mon-Wed. after Easter. We only get the full week if we don't have ANY snow, but we always have a little. Our last scheduled day is end of May, but we have snow make up days until June 8 or 9. The 9th was the kids last day this past year, teachers until the 11th. Makes for a very short summer! Plus, it just decided to get REALLY hot this weekend. My kids will be miserable on the playground! Double edged sword, they need to play and run around and climb, but it's too hot....

When we lived in Alaska, the only snow days we had in 10 years were actually not for snow -- but for ice. The warm winds came through in January/February and melted a lot of snow overnight but then it froze again before morning, leaving the roads really, really slick. But never closings for snow.

It has snowed twice here since we've lived here...the first time was on a school day and they closed school (for about 1/2 inch of snow that all melted by 10 am), and the second time was on a weekend this past winter so there was no school closing then.

Anyway, just wanted to share a picture of Christy, Nikki, and me from our DIS Meet at DHS!

Yay!! You beat me to it! I'll wait to post mine for when it comes up in my TR! That's a nice picture! I didn't take my ears off for more than a minute the whole trip!!

Gee, don't you get effected by the Kings Dominion Rule? When VA mandated that unless you get a waiver, school must start after labor day so that Kings Dominion can make money and have enough workers. To get a waiver, you have to prove that you close for a certain number of snow days for a couple years in a row. We lost our waiver a few years ago, so since then, we've always started the Tuesday after Labor Day and don't get out til the 3rd friday in June. We get two days at Election Day, Columbus Day, Wed through Fri. for Thanksgiving, and a week at Christmas. This passed year we got 2 weeks at Christmas because of the days of the week that Christmas and New Years fell on. Then we get MLK day, President's day and a week at Spring Break. This year it is March 28thish to 2nd of April. I'm not sure which day is Easter. But passover starts the day of break. We get off Memorial Day. This is not a lot of breaks.

My DS17 has a calculus packet to do over the summer. And all the AP classes have work to do over the summer.

We do not miss alot of days for snow anymore. We haven't had 2 feet of snow since 2003 I think. By mid March, I just can't bare not being in Florida another day!!

 Yeah, we always get the waiver. Sometimes I think they give us snow days that we don't really need just to keep it! We were close to loosing it last year, but we had like 12 snow days, and most of those are for ice. We have a mountain in our county, and it always gets a lot of snow and ice, and it's dangerous for the buses to run down the mountain to our 1 central High School.

Yay!! You beat me to it! I'll wait to post mine for when it comes up in my TR! That's a nice picture! I didn't take my ears off for more than a minute the whole trip!!

Awe. Thanks for the pic!

:goodvibes

I love your ears, Nikki. I wanted to get myself some ears of some sort while we were there but never did...that's on my list for our next trip.

I didn't get any ears this time either. I wanted to. Next time, I'll get those ears. My daughter bought herself the bride ears that Nikki got, and we got a set with blue and purple tule for my DD7 as her flower girl ears.

With having my MIL and niece along, and with the crowds, we didn't get to do all we had planned to either. My MIL said, "Mindy, you plan the days and just tell us where to go" just like Emma's family said, but it didn't work that way. We never did get to Adventureland at all!! Can you believe that. My first MK trip without getting to Adventureland. We also never got to Germany or Japan or Canada in EPCOT. Germany is always a favorite stop as is Japan. I've still never gotten to Canada. We go to the read Canada, so they just don't understand why we should visit the pretend one!!:rotfl:

No Adventureland? I'm so sorry for you Mindy!....

I had to miss out most of Fantasyland, lots of AK... and about 2/3rds of Epcot, as the family thought the attractions were (Quote: ) "Boring" and/or "Just For Children" :confused3

I just had to remind myself that I would be back in wdw in December, with another true Disney fan, my sister (Wazowski31 !)... and we have made a pact to do everything we possibly can!! :cool1:

Emma princess: x x

Yeah, now that I think about, we walked through Fantasyland once or twice but we did not ride ONE ride! I think it's because we had in the back of our minds that we are going back in October with my niece, so we'll be ALL about Fantasyland then!!

We are in the process of making our plans for spring break to go with our friends who have the twin boyscouts. We are planning to celebrate her boys and my son all getting their Eagle Scout Rank. Let's all wish them luck. Its alot of hard work.

I'll definately be hitting adventureland then. MIL LOVED Soarin' and we spent an entire EMH waiting an hour to ride it again. It was so crowded that even at EMH the line was long. I didn't even go that time. I saw toooo hungry and I went off to Sunshine and Seasons and got some eats!!

One of the biggest difference is that I'm a real shopper. My MIL HATES shopping, and with the crowds and her scooter, she didn't want to shop at all. The only time we went into a store with her was right after our breakfast at Cape May. We walked over to EPCOT which had just opened, and we shopped for a few things in the International Gateway shop. I made two very short stops in the main street crystal shop for a figurine and at Mumbasa gift shop for my collectable beaded giraffe. Those were pre-planned and took me minutes to buy. I didn't even get to peek into TrendD.

I cant believe that I didn't buy ears though. :scared1:

I am way behind in this school discussion. My dd started complaining of a sore neck Friday afternoon. Went to a birthday party and sleep over Sat. Sunday sore neck turned into sore throat. Woke me up at four am Mon. morning crying over ear pain. Long story short, doctor says double ear infection and sinus infection! :scared1: Of course she does, school starts Wed. :)

Anywho she's very medicated at this point so I am trying to catch up. Our school system goes 180 days. We have snow days built into that and never use them. I think honestly we could close for five to six days and not have to make anything up. We begin school the second week in Aug. and get out at the end of May. We have more holidays than I can shake a stick at. Labor Day, two random days for teacher development, fall break that is one week and a day, three days for Thanksgiving, 2 1/2 weeks for Christmas, MLK day, Presidents Day is a four day weekend, spring break is a week and a day, and a state mandated day for all eleventh graders to take the SAT and no one else attends school but them. Now that I see all of yours I think we have it pretty good.

Since you all are discussing schools. We moved to Florida from Texas a year ago. My DH and I are always discussing "when are the kids in school?" Guess they are in 180, but seems like they were always getting a holiday or teacher workday last year.

School starts in two weeks here and will run through the first of June.

What hours do your kids go to school? In Texas the elementary went from 7:45am to 3:00. Here they start at 8:00 and get out at 2:15, then this past year they started an early release one Wednesday a month at 12:15 to give teachers time to do paperwork.:confused3

Hope your daughter is feeling better. Lucky you - that sounds like a great vacation schedule!! I wish we had even part of that!

Here, elementary goes from 8:30 to 3:15, middle school from 7:55 - 2:45 and high school from 7:30 to 2:20pm

How have you found the schools in Florida?

It is never easy when the little ones are sick. It can be very scary. I hope she begin to feel better real fast.

As far as schools go I don't think it matters as much about the schedule but more that kids have food in the morning and parents that teach them how to attend to school. Not only by attending each day but by paying attention and completing the assignments.

So many of our school seem to be failing and the teachers are blamed but I believe it is the parents who need to take a large measure of the blame. The school can not be resonsible for teaching basic good social behavior. That needs to be taught at home. Also if kids do not attend how can a teacher teach!

Then for the poor kids that do want to learn but have to deal with the bullies and other negative behaviors for kids who parents for the most paryt just want free child care. Of course I am talking about public education here.

I do know that at times you can have a child that the parents do it all right and still there are issues but most of the behavioral issues today are lack of training. Guess I better get off my soap box. So a big THANK YOU to our teacher who now days are expected to work in a war zone. Lois

Poor kiddo -- I hope she feels much better very soon!

Thank you so much, Lois -- on behalf of my husband, a teacher. There are so many times when I can't believe the stories he comes home with about the things he has to put up with from both students and parents, and how bad he feels for some of his students who obviously aren't getting parental support, encouragement, guidance, etc. It's sad.

Oh I'd love that.

Here we never get enough time to do paperwork.

Then again you are talking about Elementary and I teach high school.

A lot of kids don't have manners anymore. And when I call parents about situations that occur, they don't want to be involved, saying it's my job to take care of it.

A lot of parents don't care anymore and just buy their kids stuff to keep them busy and out of the way.

I remember a kid that was so mean and all to me. Asked me if I wanted kids. And I said some students made me doubt it. And he told me:Miss, it depends how you raise them. They won't be as bad, because you will raise them how you see fit.
