OFFICIAL JULY 2009 THREAD!!! (Part 2) It's here!!

Sounds like my kids in Texas are on the same kind of program yall are on in Georgia. Studies show boys learn better and have better concentration skills when they are able to get up and do physical activity several times throughout the day. Why do we spend tax dollars on these studies if no one utilizes their advice?

Good question! My girls are the same way -- both are athletic and love PE and physical activity...they both play sports almost year-round and love it. It seems like a waste of money to do these studies and then not act on them.

Removing PE, art, and music from our schools does a huge disservice to our kids -- art and music are also very important! I taught piano lessons for years and music really helps kids with their math skills!

I agree with the art and music also - And i don't really see that all this increased classroom time has really led to accelerated learning

Years ago when I was in my twenties and my kids were just babies I volunteered in a 4th grad class. The teacher showed me a spelling test from one of girls. She wrote F*** down for each of words. Now this was a very bright young lady. The teacher asked me what I though it meant. Having come from a verbally abusive home and studied up on things like that I knew that it was not good. I told this young teacher that I felt there was a very good chance that this was a cry for help and that this beautiful young girl was being sexually abused. I do not know what the teacher did as I never followed up.

It is a war zone out there and our future is at risk. Teachers should teach not need to parent. Parents need to parent. Today our school suck because as a country we will not hold parents responsible. Kids who cannot behave should not be in the regular classroom. This comes from a social worker who works with folks who are developmental disabled. I believe in mainstreaming these student but not at the expense of others. We need to make a change or we will be at the bottom of the feeding chain. Lois

I completely agree. I work in a school where the children are raised by us, the teachers.Their parents are always away on vacation, or sailing the seas. And then, they have the nerve to blame us when the child doesnt do their HW!

Its getting worse and worse year after year. We cant yell at the children when their bad so they learn to talk back. its just sad because i love my job and i love the kids- in fact they showed up at my wedding!!! I dont know whats going on anymore

I have seen a lot of discussion on teachers raising children. I agree. I am a school counselor and I have had parents come to me asking me to deal with incidents that have happened during the week-end.

I work in an inner-city school and our parents come to us for everything because they do not know where else to go. I deal with it because our school wants to be as supportive as we can. It is very frustrating.

In other news, Yoo Hoo! My principal e-mailed me and asked me to attend a conference in November in Orlando. I did not think that I would be able to go back to Orlando for a few years. We are staying at a Sea World resort but I hope to make it to WDW at least one day.:banana::banana:

You are so right. I'm sure they're counting my son walking in the halls as physical activity. Luckily he is a boyscout. They hike, canoe, work on personal fitness merit badges, swim. My DD7 only had 3 or 4 days of PE, not sure which. I think it might only have been 3. Art was also only a few days a week. In 7th grade, the kids have no art available. In one of the grades, my DD (now 21) had to leave out music from her schedule because of other requirements. She never did fit it back in. All the studies they pay for show the importance of physical education and art and music... but you are right.. they don't listen at all. Our high school has band, and marching band and jazz band, but no concert orchestra!! My HS had a concert orchestra. I thought it was standard. There is very strong pressure here for kids to be merit scholars. In my son's school... there are a lot of them.

Wow.. that's awesome. November is a favorite time of mine for Disney and Orlando in general. I've never been to the Sea World there. Took DD21 to the San Antonio one when she was about 2. She loved it. I have wanted to take DD7 to the Orlando one, but we can't break away from WDW!!

Where is everyone? I'm here...wishing I was back at WDW and very excited to be going back in October for MNSSHP and a day at the water parks.

My kids are fully back in school...are all of our July DISer teachers back to school yet, or getting ready?

I here! :cool1:

The DIS is like home. I may not respond very often, but I'm still here lurking.

My wife started back on Monday (with students on Wednesday). My son starts kindergarten this coming Monday. We get to go meet his teacher tonight!

What does your wife teach? I hope you all like your son's kindergarten teacher!

I'm still here, of course! I went in school a few days to start setting up my new classroom. I had to move upstairs and start from scratch with the set-up! We don't officially start until after Labor Day, though.

I got my Photopass Photobook in the mail today!!! :cool1:

Im here! Just been uber busy loads have gone on since getting back- and vins sister is due anyday!!

I have to head back to work the first to decorate- and just got plenty of decorations- moved to a huge room (My old one was a closet...literally) so this is great!

lol

Hope all is well with everyone!

Hey, I am here too! We started last Wednesday. A student in another K class broke his arm on the playground yesterday, requiring surgery. What a great start!

Dad is finally going to have his surgery on Monday. His blood test results didn't help much, so back to square one there. Keep on praying everyone! It will be a scary time, hope he doesn't bleed too much. I'll try to update from the hospital, it has Wi-fi. I'll be on my Itouch, so forgive the looks of it. It takes me forever!!!!

Also, our county is going to use some stimulus money to give us a tuition free masters program, with all the classes either online or here in our small town, so even though there is a LOT going on right now, I decided I'd be crazy not to. WHAT WAS I THINKING???????:confused3 So in three years, I'll have my masters in curriculum and instruction!

I haven't had time to get on FB lately, is that group hopping? If so, I'd better go over and post!

Thanks dear! I can't believe you get to go back in Dec!!! I am soooo jealous. (Where is that green w/ envy smilie??) We are going to Hilton Head Island for New Year's Eve, and a few days after. Figured we'd need to get away by then, and actually be able to. BTW, Brad says HI!

I am here too. I have been running my daughter to and from band camp. School starts next Wednesday. December - what a great time to go back. I wish we were going that soon! It looks like we will be back for spring break.
Flipflop mom - I will keep your dad in my prayers.

Give Brad a hug from both of us. Truth be told we have no business going back. I just want to see it at Christmas so we are going and thats that. Lois

I start back on Wednesday. The students at my school start on the 31st. My children attend a small Parochial school and they started this past Monday.

I'm not a teacher... I used to be a sub. I help in the classroom once a week. But we don't go back until Sept 8th, so I haven't had a chance to volunteer for anything yet. I've got my DD21's wedding a week from Sunday, and it sstress city!! So much to do. I wish I'd had 6 months to plan instead of 6 weeks!!! I really wish I could go back this fall. Just found out this week that DH has nearly 30 days of vacation to burn before mid Dec. because his company is changing their vacation accrual system. If I only had the money right now.. and the points... we're out of points for the year. But a months worth of vacation.... wow... what we could have done. Of course, with the kids starting school, its not like we can just take them out for a month or even a week. I'm so bummed. :guilty: We'll have to take a stay-cation and scrapbook my Disney Pics and view all your pics.
