*********OFFICIAL January 2015 Thread - COME CHECK IN!!! ***************

I have my ADRs booked but not sure about them. Advice appreciated.

I have the Costco pkg with a free Character Meal.
We are staying onsite and really love EMH get 6-10 rides done in first hour. So that is making breakfast at PCH and StoryTellers out. Girls are 15 and 13 so coming out of Princess stage. We did Akershush last year and was their least fav.

Current reservations:
5:30 pm Goofy's Kitchen. -really worried about Characters
10:40 -am Minnie's. Would be a first time ever for us. and 7 am start that day so should be ready for a break.
F! Dinner pkg Blue Bayou. We were planning on eating there anyway so just upped the $ a bit.

Not use to this many sit down meals at DLR.

Again any advice. Thanks!

two questions for folks that go often:

1- We will be arriving at DLR late afternoon/dinner time on Sunday 1/25 this appears to be last day the Train will be running as well as IASW Christmas before shut down for overlay removal - so my question is do I use one of my 4-day park hoppers for just a half day to see these things, DL open till midnight, or will they just be such long lines from everyone just trying to get one last ride before they shutdown. I should also mention never been to DL and probably will never ever get to go again, we've never seen either of these so not sure if I'm really gonna know I missed something.

2 - So if we do not go into the park on Sunday we would also miss the only night that the fireworks are scheduled to be shown during our trip so if we don't get "in" the park on Sunday is there anyplace worth trying to see the fireworks outside of DL we are staying at GCH too.

any help for this newbie would be greatly appreciated

In the end it is really a personal preference. We love the train as it goes through tunnels that have things to look at and it goes through Splash Mountain which my kiddos love.

IASM is great with holiday overlay or not. I personally think it's way better than the one at WDW.

Fireworks can be seen from the grand as well as DTD. You can set your tv in your room to listen to the music that goes with the fireworks depending upon where you are located will depend upon if you can see the fireworks. They may have a viewing deck but I can't remember. I know they definitely have one for WOC but I think that is down now.

If you feel like three full days is good enough to see all you want, and you can stay up til midnight, I would do it. The crowds thin out greatly after the fireworks so you would probably not have terrible lines. This may also be a good time to hit some of the other headliners with a FP. Maybe Indiana Jones, Space Mountain and Big Thunder Mountain.

Hope that helps!

What about a late breakfast after the early rush in the parks? Like a brunch of sorts. After all the running you might be tired & ready to sit & refuel. Just a thought.

Almost 100% packed! My husband has yet to put a single thing into his suitcase though. Haha! My sons suitcase is packed and zipped shut, my daughters is almost there and mine is almost there as well.....

I can feel the excitement in the air as we get closer and closer to departure! I will update you all on our trip as we go along with our itinerary. We have q few days in San Clemente prior to DL, but it'll help get everyone geared up for their trips anyways. :)

Already in LA (for a wedding) - driving up to GCH tomorrow morning! Very lucky that the rain should be gone by then! Thanks for all the great tips and advice - plan on reporting back!:cheer2:

Here now. :).

This has been a very eventful trip. We always consider a January trip because of the decreased crowds. We think it's a fair trade off for dealing with the refurbishments. We took the chance and came a few days early in an effort to beat the scheduled refurbishments on the 12th. That paid off, but we have been surprised by the amount of crowds.

We are staying at DHL. I have been surprised by the amount of construction/refurbishment here. We were at the pool of the first time today and the construction noise was a bit of a downer. Tonight starts a couple of nights of rolling blackouts and no hot water. We were given light sticks to use in the room. Lol.

The rain made for a couple of miserable days. Usually rain lessens the crowd level, but it was pretty busy throughout both days. Sunday we waited for our Radiator Springs FPs time and the ride closed. Headed to Flo's to keep dry and grab something warm to drink. We were handed our tray when the fires alarm went off and we were forced back outside. Waited until the kids wanted to bail for Downtown Disney. Headed to Tortilla Joes and was once again evacuated when the fire alarm went off. Lol

We have taken everything with good humor. It has been neat to see the last final few glimpses of the holiday decorations as they slowly disappear. The construction walls continue to grow though. I feel for the many international families here who miss so much with these refurbs.

I will be sure to post a trip report when we return. I have usually been able to post, but wifi is very spotty here.

Safe travels to all the families traveling this week! Good luck with the races!

Oh for the love of pete, what is going on at the Disneyland Hotel??? I just canceled our reservation at the GC due to various closures within CA not making it worth it to us to stay there, but we are staying at the DLH for 4 nights over this weekend. I am seriously going to lose it if we have to deal with constant noise around the pool, or no lights or hot water at a hotel after paying pretty steep prices due to it being a race weekend. I thought I was upset last night after hearing about various closures. If the DLH is a mess, after not being told about any construction or issues when talking to the hotel several times on the phone lately, I am so done with Disney.

I think the blackouts/water issue is only for early this week.. Our in room paper only notes Monday and Tuesday, but those are the last two days of our stay.

I wish I could tell you what they are doing. The second floor around Goofy has plastic and scaffolding. Looks like they are building railings above the seating areas near Fantasy Tower also. Lots of hard hats roaming the halls. The were working on our roof (Frontier Tower) and elevators this morning. I did drop by the front desk to drop off our survey and to pass along the comment that usually hotels notify guests of construction prior to check-in. We are not big complainers, but we did get the room next to the elevator hallway on the top floor and the workers started very early this morning. Just received a shrug as a response as the CM took my survey. :/

We did see many trucks being unloaded today with Expo materials, tents, scaffolding, etc. Hopefully this is just the big push for the race guests. :)

Back home. :) I decided not to do a big trip report. We had a great time though. I really want to preface that our trip was fun, but we did have some issues that probably made this trip more of a mixed bag. We usually stay offsite when we travel as a family and splurge for on site when my DH and I go alone. We decided to stay at DLH because we hoped to have more relaxed pace with 5 park days.

We requested two connecting rooms with daybeds. My teenagers no longer tolerate sleeping together. I understand that requests are not guaranteed, but I did call a day before to review our requests. We usually travel with an aerobed, but we were told the requests could easily be accommodated. Of course this was not the case when we arrived. We were told there were no more rooms with daybeds (with or without connecting rooms) and we would need to use sleeping bags. We were able to delay check in to get connecting rooms though. We ended up next to the elevators overlooking the parking lot in the Frontier Tower. The CM checking us in made a big deal over how nice our rooms were with balconies. These were the smallest rooms we have ever had at DHR. And the balcony in one room was mostly blocked by the elevator hallway. My kids took turns sleeping on the floor. You can imagine what a pain that was throughout our stay.

My biggest regret was changing to on site. We would have had more room, everyone with their own bed, plus a much closer location had we stayed off site. Two days of downpours made that long walk through Downtown Disney a miserable experience. Also my previous posts go into the construction issues...I won't repeat here.

On to the parks! How wonderful to catch some holiday decorations! Each morning brought less and less, but our hotel was one of the last holiday holdouts. The monorail was super convenient, but I did miss that feeling of walking down Main Street, so we walked to the Esplanade a few times.

Friday was crowded, but fun! It was the first time my youngest was tall enough to ride Autopia alone. Small World Holiday and Haunted Mansion were gorgeous. This was our first time back since the FP return time enforcement. We really missed the old policy and had several instances where we were not able to get back to the attraction within our return time. F! Is a mess...a very poor decision by Disney. We had a dessert only reservation at Big Thunder and enjoyed a relaxing break from the crowd. I really recommend it!

Saturday was a mess...rainy and crowded. We had FP for F!, but with the steady rain we decided to skip it for more attractions.

Sunday...rain. Enough said. :D

Monday....sun! The wait times reduced but the parks were no where never the predicted crowd level. First day of big closures. HM, Splash, all of Critter Country joined Matterhorn and Big Thunder Ranch to the refurb list. Condor Flats closure made the Grand Californian entrance a hassle. surprised that Redwood Creek was also closed. We never have any luck getting into there. Frozen area was pretty, but my family had little interest in it.

Tuesday was gorgeous!

Overall our biggest complaints were our hotel choice, FP return time enforcement, and the general F! mess. I think the idea of off season is dead. We all agreed to take Hydroguy's advice and go mid summer next time. The crowds are relative, especially when you take in consideration all the construction and closures.

Wishing my fellow Jan. DISers a magical trip!!!

Whoo-hoo! Back! Fantastic short trip - only there Monday and Tuesday, getting back late last night. Thank goodness for the sunshine - it was just gorgeous! More crowded than I expected but we had an amazing time! Can't wait to go through our Photopass - we met so many characters this time! Mickey (twice), Pluto (twice), Minnie, Daisy, Goofy, Russell (from Up), Anna & Elsa, Olaf, Sofia and Doc McStuffins! Phew! No Hiro & Baymax though - oh well! Will post more after we're a bit more recovered. :cool1:

We are home. Getting ready to go back next week! Hopefully the DLH is better than the PPH.

We had great weather at the beginning of the week. The rain at the end of the week was a mess and didn't diminish the crowds any.

We had some fabulous character interactions! Our autograph book was a hit! I'm looking forward to putting together the next one. I haven't had a chance to go through our photos yet, but I'm sure we got some great ones.

We were totally surprised when our daughter was chosen for the Jedi training. She absolutely loved it! It was very exciting!

FWIW I called the DLH to inquire about the blackouts/water/construction concerns for any concerned.
.
The cast member was very kind and apologetic and was aware of the items referenced. He stated that the blackouts were finished and certainly not planned - it was part of maintenance that had to be done asap. and said it was over ( hopefully this is accurate for you too).

He did say that the other construction is regarding safety railings so I am assuming that is part of the OSHA thing that obviously has to be done but couldn't promise a completion date. I hope this helps others and hoping it doesn't impact people too much.

Has anyone who has been so for in January seen Rapunzel and Flynn for any meet and greets? My daughter was really looking forward to meeting them but now that fantasy fair is all Frozen not sure where we would find them.

Looking forward to our weekend visit in two weeks. We have ADR at Plaza Inn on the 31st for a Character Breakfast. That's it, that's all the "planned" stuff. Except that plans are to avoid the area around Pirates and New Orleans Square during Fantasmic and Main Street during the parade(s).

We are staying right outside Maingate at the Best Western Park Place. We've stayed there before without any concerns. Easy to get back and forth from the parks and easy walking distance to a few restaurants there as well.

Just ordered my PhotoPass+ last night. We'll be seeking out all those photographers to make the most of our PhotoPass+ :) It will be me, my husband, our son, daughter-in-law, granddaughter (almost 7 mos at the time of the visit) and daughter-in-law's mom & dad. We went two years ago all together, so we're making another trip. We are fully aware of the refurbishment list but we're not going to let that stop us from having a great time spending it together.

My husband and I have another trip planned in May just after the rumored 60th birthday celebrations start date. Made those reservations (DVC) before I knew about the 60th birthday LOL. We'll be stay on the GCH on that trip using our DVC points. Just the two of us going to make it a leisure trip for sure.

Had a great first full day in California. Drove up to Universal Studdios from San Clemente and could not believe the traffic! Wow there is so much traffic here in California, it's mind-boggling! We left here at 9 am, the park was only open 10-5, but we actually didn't get to the park til 11:00. Like I sais, traffic was BAD. The weather was perfect though and we were able to ride everything once! The Mummy 3 times, and Jurrasic Park 4! Today is a rest/shop/bonfire on the beach day, so hope you all enjoyed my little update!!
