OFFICIAL January 2012 5K, Half Marathon, Marathon, Goofy or Dopey Challenge Thread

My husband will be running the Marathon for the first time in January. He was wondering if they provide any type of snacks during the race such as energy gel. Does anyone know what brand it is? He wants to train with it so he used to it. Also do they provide and thing to drink except water? He is a big Gatorade drinker.

I am considering purchasing a Chear package. Does anyone have any experience with this. Is it worth the money?

I'm not sure on the other food during the race (I want to say I've read there are bananas at least,) but they have clif products on the course. I think the map indicates which stops have more than just water and powerade.

Disney provides water and Powerade at their water stops. The Powerade is from a mix and is a bit diluted compared to what you get from a bottle. As for gel, they offer Clif Shots at mile 16-ish. Some of the aid stations around mile 14-16 offer bananas too, but since the smell of them makes me nauseous, I run past them so fast and don't remember exactly where they are.

Yes they offer Bananas close to the 14 mile marker. They also offer Cliff shots around somewhere between 15-16 and I think again between 19-20. I think they have bananas again, but I'm not positive. I didn't do the Marathon last year, but the years before that they had candy right before you go into the Studios.

They have water and powerade at each stop and I think the powerade is diluted.

Great topic! What do most people use for training? Are you bringing it with you?

I never rely on aid stations and avoid them at all costs!

I usually use Lara Bars or my own homemade Energy Bites that I carry with me. I have used Hammer Nutrition Perpetum solids as well and kind of like those.

I usually carry a running water bottle with Endurolyte tabs in them. This gets me through a Half Marathon without having to stop at the stations.

I think for my first Full in October I will probably carry my hydration backpack and stock up on water, endurolytes and make a bunch of my Energy Bites.

Candy was after the studios last year. :)

I never carry anything with me on training. Once my runs get too long to complete without water (usually 10 miles) I put water or Gel in the mailbox and do a route that takes me past my house after however many miles.

On race day I sometimes throw a Gel in my pocket but if I know they will have them on course at about the miles I'll need them I don't bring anything.

In training I carry water/sports drink with me on runs longer than 90 minutes or so (or in the really hot weather we've been having, over an hour). For runs over 2 hours I carry food, which usually consists of Sharkies. I'm considering trying gels during my long runs this fall, just because the idea of a single item rather than a packet of little chews is appealing, but I like taking a couple of chews every 10-15 minutes or so. On race day, I depend on the course for fluids but still carry my nutrition of choice.

I find that amazing! I don't see how you can go up to 10 miles without water. You must be part Kenyian, lol.
That would be tough to do down here when I am running in 100 degree temps at 8:00PM.
Good luck on your upcoming races.

I race with the same stuff I train with - Clif Shots, Clif Bloks, and Sport Beans. I bring enough for me and a little extra in case I come across someone who needs some. I stuff it in my Fuel Belt or SPI belt and get my fluids from the aid stations.

I always carry the gels I need with me during a race, even if I know they provide them. That way I know I'll have what I need in case an aid station runs out, or if I miss grabbing what I need. I don't usually carry water unless the race requires it.

Oh no, if I were part Kenyan I'd get to that 10 mile mark a lot sooner. Once I get to the longer miles I wait until dark and go out. I made the mistake once of doing a 10 miler while the sun was up and it was in the 90's. I made it but felt like garbage and by the end I was doing more of a shuffle than a run.

Capt.
Don't let him fool ya! He may not be part Kenyan, but he is certainly fast!

So this is kinda of a random question, but through all the training I've done this year and last year for half marathons I've noticed when I run farther than 3 miles I always have to stop and walk/run the rest of the way because of stomach cramping. It's not a regular cramp but more like a 'have to go to the bathroom' type cramp. I don't ever get sick but it keeps me from running farther. My body can definitely keep going and my legs don't really hurt at all. Is it maybe something I am eating, or not eating? Anyone know how I could fix this?? Thanks!!

Ive read that when you get cramping and stomach issues its usually due to something you ate before your run. In most people's case its too much protein.

Its ideal to have simple carbs to fuel your runs and protein to recover muscles after your run.

I read the Thrive Diet by Brendan Brazier who is a professional Ironman he says that eating too much protein before exercise is usually the culprit to stomach issues and cramping. Usually that with not enough water. His whole book is about how to better fuel your body before/during/after intense and long duration physcial activites like running.

Awesome, I'll have to check that out. I'm new to running so I don't know much about the food part of it! Thanks!

Do you run in the mornings? I had those issues too until I read drinking juice with breakfast tends to bring on those cramps. I immediately stopped drinking juice before my weekend workouts and switched to either water or gatorade and haven't had problems since.

I would second thinking about what you eat before you run. What you eat and when you eat it has a definite impact. I just can't do dairy, and I need to make sure I eat something small no less than an hour beforehand. Any closer and I feel bloated an/or a little queasy.

Hope you find and resolve the issue soon.

Well I usually dont eat anything before I run, I have a bad digestive system already so I dont eat at all to make sure nothing happens. It must just be something I am eating the night before. I always eat proteins so I'll try and cut that out first to see if it improves!

Anyone run the Rock n Roll Virginia Beach Half Marathon yesterday? I finished with a PR of 2:17:44! The flat course certainly helps. It was a great race and I'm definitely going to look into more from the Rock n Roll competitor series.

RunDisney had a booth at the expo with all the medals. I got a sneak peek of the marathon medal!
