OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

Bad news on the injury front. I went for my last really long run yesterday. I had decided to do 20, because of my previous achilles pain. I was fine for 2 miles and then, my ankle felt twingy, if you know what I mean. At mile 3, I felt a real pain and there was no more running for me. Luckily, my hubby was home and was able to come and get me.

I came home and started called all the sports doctors in the area. No one can get me in before the race. No one!

I'm icing again and using Aleve. I'm massaging. What else can I do at home to get me through this race? I looked at some taping videos. Will that help on race day?

I agree with your treatment for the weekend. I would also seek the advice of a doctor, family, sports, etc. I am not convinced that a chiro is a good solution for a short term fix to an acute injury.

Here is the rub. If it is the Achilles tendon then you really do NOT want to push through anything. While the biggest tendon in the body it is fragile once stressed and can easily snap or tear. Both are long term rehabs.

Absent a doctor visit, I would keep it warm over the next week and stay on an NSAID for the week. I would not be tempted to 'test' the leg. I would go as far as saying if you do not get into a doc between now and race day that you do not run at all. If you do not run between now and race day you have enough fitness in reserve to get you through the race. Just slow up a bit on race day and you will do OK.

Hang in there!

Achilles pain. I too have bouts with it. This is a more recent thing.
I bought a fresh pair of sneaks and it is helping some. You seem to be doing the right things, and probably the only things (i'm not a doctor but have seen my share of Orthopedics). Rest it, ice it, take an NSAID (Aleve, Motrin--when i had tendonitis they told me to take 3 motrins at a time). My doctors also said to never get a cortisone shot in the achilles. Don't push through a run like you sometimes can with some other tendonitises.

How does walking feel?

Coach,
How do I KNOW if I have enough fitness in reserve? :confused3
(I've got the super tight ITB & outside knee pain)
I did do 17 miles pretty easily, but that was over two weeks ago.

Yes, I am panicked. I'm sorry! :sad2:
I did only 4 yesterday & my knee started to hurt so I stopped.

I figure I need to rest until the race. (with some cross training - walking)
Your thoughts, PLEASE?

Try Trigger point therapy. tptherapy.com The products have done wonders for me but I highly recommend going to a running store than offers training. There is a DVD that comes with the product but I benefit from having someone help me with the therapy.

Wishing you the best for a speedy recovery!!

Hi guys,

Just got mine and DH's numbers, can't believe it's so close!! Hope the weather is better than here, should have put skates on here yesterday when I went for a run not training shoes!!

Ok, so suddenly I have to go to Phoenix on Jan. 3rd and I am supposed to stay until Saturday morning -- uh, I'm running the half on Saturday. So, I managed to get permission from my manager to fly out on Friday at 4 pm which puts me into Orlando at about 10 p.m. -- not ideal, I know. Luckily, my hubby is going to drive down on Friday and go get my packet. He's running the Goofy and will also bring down all of my running stuff and our two year old and our nanny. Could this race get any more complicated? I'm going to take a town car from the airport. I think I might ship my large suitcase home and just expense it and carry a small carry on on the plane. I'm thinking I can be at the hotel by about 11 p.m. and asleep by 11:30. Ok, so that's about 4 hours of sleep but I doubt I would get much more anyway. I figure I can scarf down some food when I get off the plane and head to the hotel.

Has anyone else flown that late the night before the race? Any tips, ideas? I've ran the Princess so I'm familiar with the course and I feel like I'll be ok. I just need to stay rested and hydrated in AZ and I'm going to try to stay on central time as opposed to West Coast time zones.

Stay hydrated on the plane too, given how dry the air is onboard. Also, make sure you get a really good night's sleep on Thursday. I think two nights before a race is more important than the night before anyway, so if you're well rested going into Friday, missing a few hours Friday night won't hurt you much.

One never really knows what they will have on race day. That being said, another long run would be in order as long as your knee does not bark. If it helps any I have run Disney twice with a last run in mid December. It is not ideal but once I had a really bad bout with the flu that hit 3 days before Christmas. I was bed ridden until late December and then could only work half days up to the Wednesday of race week. The other time I had shoulder surgery on December 20 something (the Thursday before an early week Christmas. I am not trying to say I am supeman with these examples but what I am trying to point out is that if you have been true to your training up to now you will be fine. Race day will not be one of those days you will love on Bear Island Road and really hate on Osceola. But one step in front of the the other will get you to the finish

AGREE that the sleep two nights out is more important than the night before - ESPECIALLY when getting up at 2-3 am.

I would make sure to get in a run or two in AZ. Not hard runs but you will want something to keep the nerves down. Then it is all hyrdration, hydration hydration.

My last real long run is in the bag, my second 20 miler. It was more mentally tough than physically but it feels good to know it is now downhill until race day for me.

I hope everyone is staying injury free and feels ready for whatever distance you are doing.

I had my last run - a 15K race - on Sunday. With warm-up and cool-down trots I was just over 10 miles. (I'm only doing the Half.) I'm really encouraged by how I did and felt - especially after 6.2 miles, which was my furthest without a break into multiple runs. I seemed to feel stronger as it went on, and was able to keep up my 4:1 run:walk ratio with running in almost all the segments I should (exception being that darn Cat Hill in mile 8). Yes, my IT bands are barking at me, but I know I didn't fully stretch them out, so I'm doing that and using The Stick for the next couple of days before I do some XT and a light run/walk. They're already feeling better, but i'm not going to push it.

So at least I know I can deal with "unknown territory" well - I've done it and thrived. I'm going to remember that if/when I start freaking about going further than before.

Try Trigger point therapy. tptherapy.com...

Being the DISBoards... I initially misread that as "TIGGER point therapy"

I was picturing a "Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique" type salon that specialized in
massage... he he.

Obviously my tapering is effecting me more than I realize... ;)

Well, carp!

I entered my DOB backwards for my 5K entry. I was able to find it in my email and I printed my waiver. Will I have any problems with this? And how do I correct it?

As long as you have the signed waiver and an ID matching your name there is not issue. You spend time overseas?

I'm Canadian and often only saved because I'm born after the 12th, so my birthday isn't valid if put in backwards.

Actually, and sadly, I think we Yanks are backwards to the remainder of the world.

The day/month must be the metric way while the month/day is the imperial way.

I am sure that is it... and while I think we, the US is backwards, I'll fight any movement to become more like the EU. I guess too many hot dusty summers on the Great Plains (better known as fly over country) as a kid burned a very stubborn, independent streak into my character.

I think the month/day order makes more sense because that is how most people speak the date. I would never say today is the 21st of December, I'd say it is December 21st.

Except of course when we speak of the 4th of July. :)
