OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

My husband will be running his first Disney marathon this year! We would like to see him run through a couple times. Any tips on where? Of course I would love to see him run through MK but I think whats more important is for him to see us a couple times while he is running.
Thanks!
Shannon
(leaving one month from tomorrow!)

Yesterday DH and I got in our long run-11 miles-for this week as it was a pretty nice day--50 degrees when we started. We hated to wait for the weekend as it is supposed to be much colder. It's easier to get outside when its colder when you know you only have to go 5 miles. Only 5 more weeks.....

If you go to the marathon page, you'll find lots of information about the best places to go to watch runners and how to get around. There's also a planning tool that lets you plug in your husband's pace/time and will then tell you when he should be at various parts of the course for you to see him.

14 miler today. I am feeling a lot of pain in my glute from my 7 miler yesterday, but this is our last warm day for awhile, so it should be around 40-45 for the run. If I wait until tomorrow, it will be 25 for a high. Yuck!

5 weeks? Yikes. Where did this week go? I leave for vacation in 1 month and 2 days! It's a good thing I will have Christmas and New Years to keep my mind off of the races. ;)

It looks like everyone is getting their long runs in. :thumbsup2 I have an 18 mile run tomorrow. :scared1: As we get closer, I just keep thinking how crazy it will be to actually complete a Marathon. I thought 13.1 miles was an insane distance when I started training over a year ago for the Princess Half...now I am eating my words. :rotfl:

I did 9 last weekend (on a treadmill YUCK!). I am supposed to be at 11 this weekend. It is a little chilly but I'm sure we will warm up soon enough. Next weekend is 12 miles and we will be in NYC. That is 2 loops around the perimeter of central park! We've decided to run before we leave on Friday or when we get home on Sunday. We all run at different paces and I'm not fond of DD15 running central park all alone.

I can't believe how fast it is approaching! :scared1:

I was just coming back on to post that I actually "feel" like a marathon runner now. I did that 14 with no problem. I remember my half in April. I watched the marathon runners split off from us at mile 12 (when I was starting to tank) and felt so sorry for them.:rotfl: Now, when it's a week where my long run is 14, I feel like I've lucked out.

We can do it!!!!!:thumbsup2

I'm running my first full marathon in 37 days :: shudder ::
I've done the Disney Half Marathon various times.. I just
hope we have warmer weather than this last January
(the entire vacation was a bit cool... we come to Florida to
get a break from the cold....).

I have my last 20 miler this weekend (indoors) and then can
start to rest up. Now its just a matter of staying healthy and
fit for a few more weeks. I've been training hard since May
and am ready to see the results (I ran a 10k on the 4th of July,
otherwise I've been waiting for Disney). I'm just this side
of burned out. I think I've watch every youtube video of Disney
marathon race reports to keep my eye on the prize ;)

I hope everyone's training goes smoothly over the next five weeks.
(I'm definitely more excited about the marathon than the upcoming
holidays, how weird is that!).

Not that I don't think the 'full' folks deserve it, but they need to have a 1/2 marathon Monday too! Then we could all limp along together from ride to ride.

I'm working my way up to the distance, running 13k tomorrow. It's cold up here in Canada, flurries and cold rain. I wish treadmill running was even close to fun, since there's not enough TV shows to keep me happy.

Best of luck and an injury free Christmas to all!

Hi everyone - just found this discussion forum. I hope no one minds if I just jump in?

So we're what, 5 weeks away? When did it get to be so soon?? I am running the full 26.2 with my girl friend and we've got an 18-miler tomorrow...yuck, since it's snowing and cold and windy and just gross conditions.

Is anyone else starting to get worn out??

I'm definitely in the worn out camp. I've run several half marathons, but the full is a whole new level of commitment. I'm doing my 18 miler on Monday and frankly I just want Monday to come so that I can get it over with.:rolleyes1

I think it is just that normal process to get worn out at times. This is a stressful time of year! Holidays, Shopping for those Holidays, Parties, etc. and then we have to get our running in. It is a lot to do but getting that finishers medal will make it all worth it in the end! Keeping pushing through!!

My 18 mile run didn't happen today because I was on the way to the gym, stopped at the stop sign to my neighborhood and this cyclist actually hit my car! :scared1: I thought that he would just ride in front of me because I was stopped, but he tried to stop and apparently his bike wasn't going to do that and fell onto the hood of my car and proceeded to roll into my windshield! Luckily the 67-year old guy was okay just a bit dazed and had a scrape on his knuckle but luckily didn't get hurt by hitting the windshield. It was just very scary and not something I really wanted to deal with.

I had to actually get my car towed because my windshield is destroyed and my hood is pretty banged up so GEICO wanted to take it to their collision center ASAP. Of course craziness like this will only happen when my other half is out of the country. So no more traveling for him! I will probably end up running around my neighborhood for a while tomorrow to fulfill that 18 miles instead but it has been quite a day and the last thing I feel like doing is running. I already got my cardio workout for the day!

OMG glad you and the guy are ok!!!!

I'm doing my first cold weather race tomorrow (I have always lived in 4-season climates, but I just started running in June) - a 10K in sub-40s...closer to 30s. I HOPE my 4:1 run:walk ratio will work to bring my pace down...but with the temps and this 10K course having HILLS, I'm not going to be sad if I don't PR. But I'll be ecstatic if I do! :)

Living in Syracuse and training in December for a marathon doesn't equate. Several inches of snow tonight, tomorrow, tomorrow night, Monday, Monday night, Tuesday, Tuesday night, Wednesday.... Maybe a break coming Thursday late day when the daily high temp will be 24 degrees. Throw in breezy to windy conditions Monday thru Wednesday and I am ready to throw in the towel vs mother nature.
Seriously. I don't want to do my long training runs on a treadmill. Don't mind a 6miler. I don't feel the treadmill does the same results as running on hard pavement. Almost like a 20 mile treadmill run isn't a 20 mile run, only worth around 18. But there is no way I am running 3 hours plus on slushy snow covered roads in wind and cold, even 2 hours. What to do???
At least us Lake effect northerners will laugh when it is 30 degrees and breezy race morning and it's just anothre day for us.

16 miles indoors on a track... training for a January marathon in MN :(

5 weeks to go.

I just ran my first sub-freezing run - hopefully I've hit the bottom of the potential temperature range for the actual half-marathon. I remember training for an early April race when I lived in PA, and almost getting hit by a snowplow during a run (I didn't have a treadmill). I admire but don't envy you northern runners!

Listening to you guys makes me glad that I live in NW Florida. However, it is pretty cold here today. Right now only 32, but a high of 53. Luckily, I am cross training inside today.

Oh man it's getting close!

My tweet this morning:

Looking at my Disney tickers, seeing 2 weeks and 4 days to Christmas makes me happy; 1 month and 2 days to the half kinda makes me nauseous.

On facebook (where I had more space) I added: In a good way. I think.

WOW it's close!!!!

WOOHOO!!!!

Disney accepted my proof of time from my 10K!!!! :cool1:

I'm in the 2:45 corral!!!!! :woohoo:

I'll be in this corral too :)

This will be my first DISNEY half...2nd half marathon!

Learned a lot from my first half marathon this past May...tried to run as much as possible...made it running 6 miles before I had to start walking. Had to basically crawl the second half. This time I'm doing the run/walk method and so far it has worked great in my training and has resulted in a lot less muscle soreness...and I'm enjoying my runs a lot more :)

Tonight is my first of two 20 mile runs. The forecast is for snow and wind chill of 11 degrees. I'm not worried about the temperature but hope the footing isn't too bad. As long as the city does a decent job of getting the streets iced I think it will be fine (fingers crossed).

One month from right now our plane should be descending into Orlando for our marathon trip. I hope everyone feels like they are on schedule for whichever run they are doing.
