OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

Hi,

I have just booked the race Retreat package and also the Pasta party package.

Last night did a 2 hour run and felt ok ( it is a little bit difficult training in the evenings now it is getting dark and when on the pavements you occasionally have to stop to cross the roads.

Only one thing left to do now- book accommodation:banana:

I am in the hilton at downtown disney for 1-6th Jan ( using points so it is a free stay) to save some money.

I was thinking of either
(1) WL for 6-15th Jan:
or (2) Beach club for 6-9th Jan then WL for 9th to 15th Jan) Decisions Decisions ??

Regards

We went ahead and did 10 yesterday instead of the 9.5, and switched up the intervals. We had been trying to decide between a 3:1 or 2:1, but decided to try the 1:30. although at first it seemed like the invertals weren't long enough, once we got to miles 7+ I was sure liking the 1 min. interval!

When we did the 8 mile long run, we started at 3:1, and then adjusted to 2:1, and then even down to 1:1, I believe. since I'd like to be able to just set my garmin and not have to adjust the intervals, maybe the 1:30 is good. Does anyone else do a short interval like this?

Congrats on the 10 miles!! :thumbsup2

I'm doing a 4:1 interval. Just did 9 miles today! Where I live is very hilly so I am hoping that the nice FLAT Florida roads will help me speed up my splits!

Just curious, is anyone planning on dressing up as a Disney character, or just in traditional running performance wear?

I'm hoping to combine the two, but most of my running gear is meant for colder temperatures. Unless it's super cold (to your standards!) like January 2010, then I could probably dress up as Mickey Mouse, otherwise I'll show up in typical running apparel.

On a training note, I did 8.8 miles this morning in 11 C weather. Definitely not typical November weather for this area of Canada. It was going great until I had to run through a flooded foot bridge. My shoes got soaked and pretty much ruined my flow. That and the south wind was pretty brutal.

No costume for me. I'm hoping for a good time so I'll be wearing the running gear for the weather.

Basically typical running gear. I am thinking I'll either do a tiara or a mouse ears headband...but only if I get it in time to practice with it.

We had 2 Minnine Mouses (Mice?), one hot dog, one pizza slice, one chicken, one taco, a Spiderman, and a Bullwinkle that I saw in the NYC Marathon yesterday. I'm sure I missed some - once the "non-elite" runners started coming, we didn't get a breather at the Mile 24 water/gatorade station until it was over! (I can say I'm glad that Disney won't be using the yellow Gatorade...I might puke if I see any more of that stuff!)

I am planning on dressing up for each of the three runs. I don't know exactly what I am doing for the 5K yet, but I am dressing as Cinderella for the half and Minnie Mouse for the full. I have running skirts and tanks that I am wearing so it is a "costume" but it is still traditional running gear too. If it is cold I will pull on tights under the skirts and wear arm sleeves.

pirate: - DS wanted to contribute.

So I did my first 18 miler yesterday and it went really well. I averaged 9:14/mile pace! I was really slowing down in the last few miles though. I have been having issues with tight calves and lots of soreness so I got some compression socks, and they are fantastic! I wore them all day yesterday after I got cleaned up and today my legs are doing great. Yay!

I'm still undecided. I had a great time dressing in costume at the Disneyland half, so I might wear the same thing again. Some Twitter friends and I are also planning on making some shirts to wear for Goofy, so maybe I'll have something fun to wear both days.

I'm hoping for a PR in the half, so no costume. In the full, I'll probably just do my Minnie mouse headband or something. The weather will play a factor. If it's cold, I'll be really layered, but if it's warm, I might try something.

My SIL and I will be attaching mouse ears and maybe a bow to our SweatVac hats that we normally wear while running...beyond that no costume for us. I figure with the unpredicatability (at this point) for the the weather in January I will be packing an entire suitcase of running gear to cover all my bases!

DISboards WISH racing team members....

If you are interested in the order for WISH Racing Team Headsweats hats and or visors please go to the following thread to place your order.
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2537249
I have to have a minimum amount of orders to place an order, so this is usually only done ONCE a year.
If you want a WISH Racing Team hat/visor for the up coming year's races, now is the time to get one.
I need the minimum order placed by November 20th to get everyone's hats/visors to them by WDW January Marathon weekend.

Thanks,
Tracy

DH and I did a 10K yesterday morning in order to get him a proof of time. Wind chill was 31 degrees. Way toooooo cold for me but DH did awesome. He ran/walked it in 1 hour 12 minutes or 11:36 per mile. He just started exercising in August and at that time he was walking 17 minute miles so I AM VERY PROUD OF HIM!!!!

I only hope it isn't that cold in Florida in January!!!!

haha. you must not have been at marathong weekend last year. I ahve never been so cold in my life. I literally was cold for over a week after that race, no matter what i did I couldn't warm up! All I have to say is...what are the chances it happens two years in a row...right?

No we weren't there last year but I've heard all the horror stories! I sure hope it won't happen again this year but I guess I know now that we can deal with it.

Hope nobody minds if I jump in here quickly. After a year off I wanted to go and just run the 5K so I could spectate for the half and full. Of course I waited too long and had to sign up for the half instead.

As far as the weather, I ran in '07, '08 and '09 and have run in the 80's with high humidity. I will take my chances with the cold.

Good luck everyone.

ITA! I ran '07 and it was horrible with high temps and high humidity. I would much rather it be even in the 30's at the start than 80 at the finish!
I cannot believe we are less than 8 weeks away! I am running a half this weekend for a PR so I am in a mini-taper and it inevidably is making me nervous and jumpy:(. Looking forward to getting back to just running and not analyzing every step I take to make sure I am prepared for Sunday. Just a little taste of the first week in January;$.
Happy training!

Ok. Wife and I are all set and signed up for our first marathon ever, Disney 2011. But............
My wife hade open heart surgery this summer and some post surgery heart problems, all got better and she was up to 14 mile training runs the other week. Well now she is having more heart problems, swelling of the thing that surrounds the heart, happens often with heart surgery.
Question is, can she switch to the half marathon say in December? Same entry fee. By then it might be sold out as well. Anyone ever heard of a switch? We just aren't sure if this will go away in time for her to be prepared to run 26 miles. She's really upset about her not being able to run while I am out every other day.
Thanks.
PS. Even if she can't run at all, we still will have a great 4 night stay at the Poly with no kids this time!!!

Hey guys....long time no post!
Just wanted to check back in and say I am doing the marathon in Jan. DH, BIL, Bree and another friend are doing it too.
Good luck to everyone! Happy training.

Just checking in to say hi! Hope everyone's training is going well!

I'm feeling good at this point. Training seems to be going according to plan - and I'm getting in more hillwork than I probably need since I'm doing a lot of running in Central Park or Prospect Park. I'm definitely going to get practice with race nerves and adrenaline - I've got 5 races between now and Marathon Weekend ranging from 4 miles to a 15K. Excited!!!

I do have another change in plans with lodging. I love my sister and would have loved to save money and stay with her, but she and her roommate have 2 cats and I can have allergic reactions. I was just really worried that even with allergy medicine and my preventative Advair and "just in case" inhaler I'd end up with a massive allergy/reactive airway attack and not be able to run. So...I'm back on property now. Staying at All Star Music. Woohoo!! Usually when I go with my parents we stay moderate or deluxe, but with the difference for a moderate being over $300 more, I just couldn't justify it. So this moderate/deluxe girl will be going value. Oh well...don't plan to be in the room that much anyway other than when I'm a) too hyped to sleep or b) too exhausted to care. LOL.

Hey guys. I hope everyone's training is going well. I am happy to report my long runs are going well. My times still aren't quite what I would like for my half marathon, but I'll just have to see how it all goes on race day. I know that my short runs are at race pace or better, and my long runs are at a faster pace than I want to run the full at, so I think I'm okay.

I am more and more grateful for my running Disney fanatics here on the WISH boards. Everytime I talk to my friends about training, their eyes glaze over. None of my friends run at all. Some of them attempt C25K every once in awhile and then, give up. So, they just don't understand me. It's nice to have a place that I can "talk" to people like myself! ;)

papaof3: I'm sorry to hear about your wife's continuing problems. I think if you email them with your situation, they will change her to the half. But, I don't know if they can do it once the half is full. Since we are so close, I'd be talking to the doctors about what her expectations are for a full in 7 weeks. I hope you can both do it, but you are right. If you can't, at least you get a vacation out of it! :thumbsup2
