OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

Ok. Wife and I are all set and signed up for our first marathon ever, Disney 2011. But............
My wife hade open heart surgery this summer and some post surgery heart problems, all got better and she was up to 14 mile training runs the other week. Well now she is having more heart problems, swelling of the thing that surrounds the heart, happens often with heart surgery.
Question is, can she switch to the half marathon say in December? Same entry fee. By then it might be sold out as well. Anyone ever heard of a switch? We just aren't sure if this will go away in time for her to be prepared to run 26 miles. She's really upset about her not being able to run while I am out every other day.
Thanks.
PS. Even if she can't run at all, we still will have a great 4 night stay at the Poly with no kids this time!!!

November 1st was the deadline to switch between events per the RunDisney website. It may be worth a call to see if a late switch can be made given your situation but I would do it sooner rather than later. Good luck!

So far the training is going better than anticipated. My long runs are still being run below BQ pace which is surprising me. The last one was 17 miles and I am not counting on a BQ on race day but I should be able to shatter my previous time which in reality won't be that hard. My first full didn't go well.

Keep up the training.

Frank, so this is your second marathon?

Thanks for the answers everyone. Looks like we are late to switch. Still a chance she could run it and I guess we are optimists. Hopefully even if her training is hampered she can still say run half the marathon and walk the second half. Wish her luck.

I just ran my longest run ever at 18 miles tuesday and killed it. Looking forward to my first 26.2!

gave my shins a rest due to shin splints. was suppose to get back on track with training yesterday. Slipped while taking laundry downstairs and hurt my right foot. No broken bones after a trip to the clinic to have it checked. They said to keep off it and ice. Claim it will be better in a day or so. However I can put weight on it and I'm a little freaked out with January right around the corner!

I'm so excited. I just ran my fastest run since I started training for Goofy. It was only for 4 miles, but well under the pace I'm hoping for.

We are headed to WDW next week for a pre-marathon trip.... Can someone recommend a good place to run at Disney? We are staying at Pop but we will have a car so we could drive to another location, if necessary. Both hubby and I need to do long runs. We probably won't get in the full mileage but we need to try to get in at least 6 miles or so...

Thanks!

The Boardwalk area is the best run on property IMO. You can incorporate the canal going down towards DHS and do a couple of loops if necessary.

It's an easy drive from Pop.

Awesome! Thanks for the information. I think we are going to do the Boardwalk area run as soon as we arrive -- just so we don't get distracted by other Disney stuff....

That is great!! Congratulations!! :cool1:

I keep getting those pop up messages with my Nike+ saying that I am beating my PR's - although I take them with a grain of salt. I have to recalibrate my Sportband weekly because it is usually a little bit off (it gives me more credit - not by much any more but in the beginning before I realized how inaccurate it could be, it would give me an extra mile! :rolleyes1)

Now that the distances in training are getting a lot further, I am surprised how well I am handling them. I am sticking with the 30 second intervals on the treadmill and it has worked out nicely. Both Half Marathon's created some soreness and I would really need a break but this time, I have gone past that distance and not had any major soreness issues. I am sticking with the hill program for my shorter runs during the week and continuing my circuit training (only on short run days).

How is everyone handling training over the holidays? I am moving my training days to the first three days this week to compensate for Thanksgiving becoming a rest day along with Friday. Then, I will go back to my long run on Saturday as scheduled. Not sure what the plan will be over Christmas and New Years. I definitely need to start figuring that out.

I hope everyone is doing great with their training and has a wonderful Turkey day!! I would imagine quite a few are running locally in races that day?

Shelby: I am moving my runs to include a run on Thanksgiving. Thursday is my normal day off. But, my son was looking at my schedule and saw that I had a 14 miler on Christmas and got upset that my running would ruin Christmas morning. :lmao: So, I am moving all my runs up a day starting this week. I figure Thanksgiving is a day like any other. Plus, I think it's only a 4 miler, so it's not like my Friday run which is going to be 22 miles. I just hope I feel like running 22 after all the food and drink.;)

DH and I are training for the half and ran/walked 10 miles yesterday. Gorgeous weather...both of us wore shorts and I wasn't cold at all!!! Of course temps were almost 70 degrees.

We probably won't get a long run in this week because our DD is coming home for Thanksgiving!!!! Between picking her up on Wednesday, dinner for my extended family on Thursday, shopping Friday and Saturday, and taking her back to the airport on Sunday(2 1/2 hours each way), it's just not going to happen. Besides we want to spend as much time with DD as we can. I'm thinking we'll do 5 miles tomorrow, 3-4 miles on Thanksgiving evening, and 5 miles on Saturday. We'll still have 5 weekends to do a 11 miler, 12, and 13 before tapering the last two weekends. Now if the weather will just cooperate.....

Ran my first ever race this weekend, an 8k. Felt awsome and I'm so excited to do more races in the future. I did an 11 min/mile pace which is a little faster than what I'm hoping for at the half in Jan. It fit in well with my training schedule since I was supposed to do 4 miles on Saturday anyway. The experience has me super excitied to keep going. Long run this week will be 9 miles. :yay:

I've got an 8-miler on Christmas morning. I just told my parents and sister I'll get up early and go trot 7-8 times around the lake at CBR, then come back and get cleaned up. LOL. They'll just have to deal.

We got the 11 mile long run done yesterday. These last two long runs have kicked my behind in that right after we get done running, I feel almost sick. Does anyone else have this issue? Within a couple hours, though, I feel fine and have no soarness the next day.

I've been using shorter intervals on the past couple long runs, but I wouldn't think that would cause the issue.

How is everyone else's training going?

I know that lake well. I ran around it 5 times every morning this January. It's pretty, but did get a little boring after awhile. ;)

Pumbaa: Good job getting your 11 miles done. I feel a little nauseous sometimes when I run in the heat, pretty much anything over 65 degrees. So, unless it's winter, I just have to deal with it.

Got an 18 miler in tonight. The weather has been great for Cleveland in November (63 when the run started) which is helping a lot. Last week was my first week ever over 40 miles and so far so good on the legs holding up.

Our family does our big even on Christmas Eve which is a rest day for me. I only have 4 to do on Christmas which will probably be in the evening since we get together at my mom's in the morning.
