OFFICIAL Jan 2011 Half Marathon, Full Marathon, Dopey or Goofy Challenge Thread

Instead of starting a new thread, I figured I would check with folks here. Do you know how serious they are about the 16min/mile pace for the "fun run." My DH and DS should have no issue with it but I am worried about my DD. She will be almost 7 when we go. I emailed Disney and got a vague response that participants need to be able to "finish under their own power". I guess that would mean we can't carry her across :rotfl:, but other than that do we truly have to worry about being swept?
TIA for any help!

If we are talking about the January event....

Disney generally does not hold the caboose to the 16 minute mile. There are several reports of folks who were at the 20 minute pace range and still being allowed to finish. I would think that if you finish in under an hour AND continue to mover forward you should be OK. The caveate here is that you never know when/if they will enforce the 16 minute rule. The new epcot course heads backstage around mile 2 and return around mile 2.4... that is an ideal place to have a hard sweep for those who are not keeping a pace they feel needs to be kept.

They have not swept in the past from what I know and as long as the race continues to be run in a park it is unlikely to have a sweep that is under 20 minutes as long as the participant is moving.

Regarding SOG parking: When we've stayed at SOG we had free parking at the parks. We just showed our room cards. Has this changed? We haven't stayed at SOG since 2008 so it may have.

Yes, thank you for your response. I am referring to the 5K being held in January. I've been trying to get the kids out every night going around the neighborhood and they both play soccer, but considering this trip is a surprise I can't "train" them too hard.

why not train them for a Christmas (seasonal) 5k? Once they are ready and run a Jungle Bell 5k then you know they are trained

There are plenty of events in our area during that time of year, that is such a great idea!! Thanks! I'm kicking myself for not thinking of it myself:upsidedow

Does anyone know what the 10k cutoff is to be move up from the 2:45 corral? I'm trying to decide if I want to do a Veterans Day 10k or not.

I looked this up yesterday. I am going to submit my Veteran's Day 10K time after it is completed so I can hopefully move out of the last corral. :)

PROOF OF TIME/CORRAL PLACEMENT

Do I need to submit proof of time?
Corral placement is based on your anticipated finish time. If you believe you will complete the half marathon in under 2:45 hours or the full marathon in under 5 hours you must submit a proof of time that supports your anticipated finish time. If your finish time will be after 2:45/5:00 hours, you do not need to submit proof of time.

I submitted my proof of time when I registered. Do I need to do anything else?
If you submitted proof of time during registration, you do not need to provide any other information or documentation.

What is considered an acceptable proof of time?
Proof of time must be from a race 10K or longer completed after July 1, 2008. Proof of time should include name of race, year, distance and time finished (i.e. 2009 Disneyland® Half Marathon - 2:25).

How do I submit my proof of time?
Please submit proof of time at the point of registration. If you need to submit proof of time after registration, please email it to disneysports@trackshack.com.
I submitted my proof of time, but now I have a better time. What do I do?
If you have an improved time that you want to submit, please email your updated proof of time to disneysports@trackshack.com.

What happens if I do not submit proof of time?
If you do not provide proof of time you will be placed in the last start corral.

Do we just provide the race name, date, and our time? Do they then look it up, or we need to email them the results? I have had races that do both options, so I'm a little confused.

Your best bet in your e-mail to Disney to to give them all the data as well as the link to the results page. If before 11/1, tell them your projected time if you want to improve your position.

If after 11/1 bring a printout with your time, etc . After 11/1 they will have already sent out the bib order and havin the change actually occur is not assured.

For a 2:45 half the 10k should be about a 1:14

I don't know if this was addressed earlier in the thread, but I looked and couldn't find anything. Is there a meet? When and where? On another thread, someone said that there was something at Pop, just wanting to make sure. I need to give my husband as much info as I can as far as how much "vacation time" this running thing is going to take up! ;)

There is normally a meet at POP on Friday evening. When the event gets closer there will be meets set up.

Thanks for the quick reply. I am debating staying at Pop, and this is just another reason to pick that over others. :)

I just checked SoG FAQ page. It looks like it's not free anymore. Bummer.

I would make Pop reservations soon. I'm staying at CBR thanks to my sister's CM discount. Pop is not available at CM discounts, which means it's really close to being full.

The SoG Website indicates that you have to pay 14.00 for parking each day at the parks -- if you drive. I think parking at SoG is 5.00 per day. That brings the total to 19.00 per day. I think we are better off at Pop.

My husband actually called them today and they had rooms available! They must have released a block, as we had just phoned and e-mailed them last week and they said they were still booked. So much for the wait list! Thank you for posting that you made reservations there! :)

I could have written your post about the "cons" for SoG myself! The bus issue is a big one for me, too since they require the child be out of the stroller and the stroller folded. Like your nanny, I'm sure my mom could do it just fine, but the monorails are definitely easier!

One consideration about the cab (when you mentioned this I started thinking about whether that would work for my mom), is although we'll have DD's car seat, putting that in and out of the cab would probably be a larger hastle than the bus/stroller thing. I don't know if that's a consideration for you...

I would also like to (possibly) do the disney dining plan, and have my mom use magical express...both of which aren't available at SoG. On the plus side, shades of green sounds like it provides a nice spot to watch the runners from before going to Epcot, and is close to the monorail. So, we've got some logistical things to work out as well. :confused3

Have you stayed at POP before? In April we were planning to do half at Yacht and half at Pop, but were really turned off on Pop at check-in (never saw a room, though), and switched to AKL. Because of the great pricing, and figuring there might be a different crowd there with the marathon, we were thinking aobut staying there. Any opinions are welcomed! :)

If you think of any other pros and cons please let me know. We're just glad to have a room within walking distance of the monorail for less than 250 per room per night! :cheer2: Now I've got to add in the value of the meal plans, parking, and magical express to see if it'd be a better deal to stay at pop most nights, and have my mom (and DD) stay at Poly just the night before the half.

We have stayed at Pop before -- it's the only value we have stayed at. Prior to Pop, we had only stayed at villas and CB for the Princess half. Pop is definitely a value resort. It has a completely different feel than AKL but we really like it for the money. I agree with Coach Charles -- the food court may be the best food court on WDW property! But, over Labor day weekend we had a room facing the pool and it was very loud. I'm hoping marathon weekend will bring a different crowd and less people will be at the pool in January.

You can't beat the price of POP -- we have two rooms -preferred location--for 8 nights for 1100.00 total. I also really like the bus service at Pop. We drive to the parks in the morning and then take the bus back to the hotel for a mid-day rest and then pick up our car in the evening when we go back to the parks after the mid-day rest. This works well for us because all the buses are crowded and park closing.

If you don't think you would like Pop and decide that SoG isn't going to work out, then I would highly recommend pricing out CB. We stayed there for Princess half and it was very quiet and in a great location for driving to the race for both participants and family. The rooms are also more spacious than Pop but much smaller than SoG.

I'm happy you were able to get SoG -- we are still deciding and now we have rooms at Pop and SoG booked.

Thanks for the input! I'll have to say that I agree with you both about the food court. When we were at Yacht and AKL we had the quick service dining plan and were often going to POP and Coronado to eat!

That is a bummer. It does decrease the value of SOG.

Well, I'm in. Hubby agreed. Reservations are made. I did get in to Pop. I'm waiting just a little while to enter the races because they are non refundable and we're not 100% sure hubby can take the time off yet. Goofy is only 70% full right now, so I'm assuming I'll be okay for a little while longer, right? I'm sure that once the % gets close, all the last minute people jump, so I'll keep a close eye on it.

I'm so excited!!!!
