Some additional info from the last couple of days about II exchanging. DVC can indeed tell you which week was deposited for a deposit first and it then expires 2 years from that week. It still uses the new points structure. The $95 will remain for those that exchange in to WDW because DVC considers themselves a premium destination, basically because they can. The weeks and units given up will equal those requested. In general the same unit size and season will be given up as gotten by the member. It will be a 1:1 exchange in terms of numbers. All resorts will indeed be given up but I got the impression it would still be the less demand weeks and still mostly OKW.
The person I talked to was the one in charge of the program and she stressed the fact that members were intimidated by the previous system, which I'm sure is true. I tried to impress on her that it was now more expensive but she didn't think it would be that much more points overall. I didn't get the sense that II had put any pressure on them to make this change.
While I'm sure this new system will be more user friendly and less intimidating to many members, I'm also convinced the overall costs will be more total points for the same exchanges. I also think that it will hurt some availability more than the old system but that totally depends on how it's administered.
While I was on the phone with her, I broached a couple of other subjects. I suggested that DVC expand the BVTC and reminded her that there were previously far more options in that arena. She seemed open to the idea but not enthused enough to go actively pursuing it. I also floated a feeler about the smaller, independent exchange companies so I could gauge the reaction. I simply made the statement that if I were to exchange, I would likely use one of the independent exchange companies so I'd have more control and could trade up in unit size. I wanted to see if she balked at this idea, she did not. She said she understood why I could think that way and that was my prerogative.
