Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

Checking in from Utah! I'm here visiting family for a couple of weeks. I'm determined to stick to my training schedule, though I'm definitely not used to the heat, dry air, and altitude. I am running my first 10K tomorrow night with my sister; hopefully I will survive. Wish me luck!

Good Luck! I did a 10k last week and learned a lot about longer races and things I need to do and not do for the TOT.:thumbsup2

I ran today in near-80 degree heat. It was fabulous!!!! I felt the effects, tho...my heart rate spiked up to 185 on hills, so I got to Galloway whether I wanted to or not! I have a high heart rate to begin with, so 170's aren't unusual, but 180's don't feel all that great. But, 5.5 miles in the bag. Looking forward to another run on Sunday.

6 miles this morning, went really well considering my really wonky training lately...oh except for the part where I encountered a SNAKE....TWICE!!!! OMG, I'm terrified now. The second one was considerably larger than the first. I may have to start running in the streets now rather than the very heavily shaded pathways throughout my community, which really sucks! I ended up backtracking both times to get to the nearest intersection and then ran in the street until I could get back on the pathways past where I saw it. The second time, I was on the home stretch....about .75 of a mile left to go, directly into the blazing sun since I got out on the road. That was a killer...but better than trying to leap over the giant snake laying across the whole sidewalk!!!! I'm going to have the heebie-jeebies about it all weekend I'm sure.

Thanks! The race went really well! I felt really good most of the race and ran the whole time, keeping just under a 12 m/m pace. One thing I need to learn is how to run while drinking water from the aid stations! I ended up slopping it all over myself and up my nose! :rotfl2: I did get a little bit in my mouth.

Once I finished the race and stopped running, I got a pounding headache and felt really sick to my stomach, which lasted about 2 hours. This has happened a couple times on my longer training runs too. Why is that? :confused3 Dehydration? Or is it just my body not being used to the exertion? Any ideas for preventing this after my long runs and races?

that happens to me too with the water, once i was actually choking on it while running my first 1/2 marathon, i was like NO WAY NEVER AGAIN!!! LOL
I wish I had an answer for you about your headache but it does sound like it could have been dehydration, did you push yourself more then usual?

this thread is so long so sorry if this has been asked....
what does everyone plan on doing after the run, meaning, change your clothing or just hang out as is?
This is my first AWAY run and I don't really know the "procedure" if any :confused3
thanks!
Danielle

I'm totally planning on changing clothes. I cannot stand wearing my wet sweaty running clothes any longer than necessary.

In my gear check bag, I'll bring a change of clothes along with some deodorant and some baby wipes to freshen up a bit. At last years Wine & Dine half there were changing tents set up in the finisher area. I'm not entirely sure if there will be any for this race but you could always just change in the restroom inside the park....or not at all. Plenty of people stay in their race clothes for the after party too...it's whatever you prefer.

I'll probably be checking some clothes and a towel.

This heat has been killing me.

I'll check a clean t-shirt and some deodorant in my bag check. Maybe a clean sports bra (is that TMI? Sorry...). I probably won't bother changing my running skirt. I usually run in calf sleeves and I'll probably keep those on, too. Maybe a wash cloth or baby wipes. :confused3
I'm thinking about sticking my yucky clothes in a locker so I don't have to carry them around the park.

Yes it'll be a clear plastic bag that you get at packet pick up. You'll also get a sticker that has your bib number on it to stick on the bag before you hand it off at bag check. It's a pretty big bag, so you'll have plenty of room for a change of clothes.

awesome, sorry to sound clueless, i really should have known because I remember something like this at the Long Island Marathon that I ran, but since I lived 5 mins from the race I didn't need anything with me so really didn't pay attention, ;)

This thread has been so helpful! I'm starting to get very excited/anxious for next month! I was wondering about the clothing situation too - I'm so glad that question was asked and answered!

I was wondering a bit about the actual race itself... I may or may not be having nightmares about the 'sweepers' chasing me down lol

So this is our first long race and first Run Disney race and I've read a lot of things about characters along the way... I love the idea of taking a running break for a few minutes here and there but does doing this put us in jeopardy of the sweepers?!? Hubs and I average anywhere between 10-12 a mile when we stick together so perhaps we shouldn't stop? What do you guys recommend? I really want to enjoy this race and not worry about my time but it's such a different mentality than normal... I don't know what to think! :confused3

Thank you SO much! I'm looking forward to running with all of you soon!

If you're averaging 10-12 min/mile, you'll have plenty of time to stop for characters. At 12 min/mile you have a 4 min/mile cushion (or at least 40 minutes for stops). I don't usually stop for the character meets (I get nervous about stopping :confused3 ) but I might for this race. I usually slow down enough to snap a picture as I go by...

I know this has been discussed before but I have nowhere in this thread to find it.

Does anyone has any recommendations on how to deal with eating throughout the day when doing a night run?

Big breakfast, light late lunch, snack a few hours before?

Big lunch, lite early dinner?

Thanks for any tips. I am hoping to try a long run at night towards the end of the month since I usually go as soon as I wake up.

I do know that I hate eating anything within about 2 hours of running b/c it makes me feel sick while running.

I'm normally an evening runner anyhow, so I think I will try and keep as close to what I normally do as possible. I usually eat a good breakfast, a slightly bigger than normal lunch, then a bagel for dinner. Normally I eat a light snack later in the evening after my run. When I run its usually around 7:00 in the evening, so I want to do everything about normal, just later ;)

The pros always say to do what you have already practiced, so maybe it would be a good idea to try out different foods and see what you can handle eating that day that would settle for you for an evening run :thumbsup2

One of the best tips I got from the WISH boards is packing baby wipes in my check bag. I make a trip to Wal-Mart on 535 the day I arrive, pick up some bananas, bagels, some 2 liter soda, a case of water and a $0.98 pack of baby wipes.

I would agree with Amanda, even at your slowest pace, you will have more than enough time to stop. I have a slower pace and stop at 95% of the photo ops...I'm a ham. And I still finish under the official time.

Don't try new things out on the day of a race.
You know what your system tolerates. I am an evening runner. For dinner before a longish run, DP makes quesadillias for us. Or I make some sort of mild (to us) chicken with light sides. If I have a potato with dinner, it sinks my run. Same with salad. And dairy. But that is partially to my digestive track, I think.

I'm not sure what my friends who are doing this race have planned, but as of now this is that I am thinking:
Breakfast: Captain Cooks (Polynesian Resort) Tonga Toast (about 1/3 the price at Kona Cafe and I don't need an ADR). Probably around 10am or so, it's going to be a long day so I am sleeping in.
Dinner: Olivia's (Old Key West) Bacon Cheeseburger. This sounds counter intuitive to what I said early, but since we plan on this meal around 5pm it works fine for me.
Pre-Race: Banana in the field, about 90 minutes prior to the first wave.
