Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

I had my first "nightmare" regarding the race last night! Dreamed I was in line...not in a corral, but a single file line, waiting for the race to start when I realized that I didn't have my bib, chapstick, Garmin or my sunglasses! I panicked and try texting my hubby to ask him to bring it all to me, and when he showed up, he forgot to bring it all with him!

When I told him about the dream this morning, he just laughed and asked why I would need sunglasses for a night race! lol:lmao:

I'm in need of some board knowledge/suggestions: my wife wants a running watch for her birthday (late Aug) and I'm wondering if anyone has any that they prefer more than others. I've got a Garmin 305 and she says that the face on it is too big but she likes the functionality of it.

Any tips on which watches I should be looking into?

TIA!

I've had the dream of forgetting my bib. Now that I have some races under my belt I no longer have that nightmare. I have started having nightmares of the sweepers though. I wonder how many "sweep points" there will be.

I have the Forerunner 210, and really, really love it. I know it's a basic model compared to the others, but my favorite feature is being able to create my own intervals which is a huge help when training! It has the standard round face and doesn't look or feel big on my wrist at all.

Hope that helps!

It was a very HOT humid weekend here and Dh and I were scheduled for a 7mile run. We started early-at 8am it was 82degrees and 69% humidity-and had lots of water with us. At the 'turn around' point (3.5 miles) I asked if we should keep going another .5 miles and do an 8 mile run since we were feeling good. Dh reluctantly agreed and we went ahead!

We finished and it wasn't too bad. 8 miles done, our longest, in the heat, we averaged 12.30min miles!
I'm feeling good that we completed this and looking forward to an easy running week ;)

GREAT JOB!!! :thumbsup2:thumbsup2 Always a wonderful feeling when you go out for a set distance and wind up surpassing it.

I got out early yesterday, also to beat some heat. Temp. was 81 and humidity was 82% at 2:51AM. Did my 8 miles and was soaked so took a quick shower then DW and I went out for 6 miles. Turns out the temp. had gone down a little and so did the humidity.

Keep up with the fantastic training.

I also just bought myself the Garmin Forerunner 210 about a month ago. I started using it when I finished my C25K app, so now I'm using the Garmin watch and my iPod nano. It's so much nicer than having an armband! I worried the Garmin would feel heavy and clunky, but it really doesn't. I learned my way around what I wanted to do on it pretty quickly, and I'm also a huge fan of the programmable intervals. I'm training on the Galloway plan, so having the run/walk intervals programmed when I start my run is just wonderful.

Oh! And I totally forgot to write in with my latest...DH and I went away for the weekend on Friday, and I didn't want to do the 8-miler in unfamiliar territory, so I got up early on Friday and did it here. This was my longest run ever! 8 miles, and I finished at a 10:15 pace (run 4min, walk 1min). This morning I got back out there after a *very* food-indulgent weekend and still had a really good 30-min run.

DH and I signed up for a 10K near Camp Grandma this weekend - it'll be my first race ever, and I'm alternately nervous and excited! I feel like if I can do 8 on my own, I can definitely do 10K in a crowd. :)

I ran ten miles today, after nine days at WDW. I thought it was a good idea, as the vacation would be a taper. It was an ugly run, but I did it. However, the recovery isn't going well today.

I have an ancient Garmin forerunner 50 that I love, but keep hoping will die so I can justify a new one with GPS capability. A bigger face is good for you to look at and fiddle with while you're bouncing around. LOVE being able to track my progress online; I have the foot pod and HR monitor so I can see how each run ends up "looking". I'm to understand that the fancy new ones can actually track elevation and whatnot.....:thumbsup2

Got my 8 miles in this morning before work. I just never got a chance to do it over the weekend and didn't want to skip it. I had a decent pace going, too, for the first 6 miles until the sun came out. Oh, how I dislike running in full blazing sun!

Once I finished the race and stopped running, I got a pounding headache and felt really sick to my stomach, which lasted about 2 hours. This has happened a couple times on my longer training runs too. Why is that?
I've been having the same things after my long runs lately and I'm 99.9% sure at this point that I'm just plain overheating. I'm positive I'm neither dehydrated nor over-hydrated, and the way I feel is spot-on with signs of impending heat exhaustion. Jeff Galloway recommends soaking down mid-run by jumping in a pool or using a hose and I tried that this past weekend - took a dip in my pool at mile 8 of 9 miles... it was a HUGE relief! Too late, though; I needed to cool off sooner, for sure.

Does anyone has any recommendations on how to deal with eating throughout the day when doing a night run?
I've been experimenting in anticipation of the race and, so far, this seems to be working well for night runs: big, protein-packed breakfast of scrambled eggs with veggies, wheat toast, veggie sausage; mid-morning cheese stick; medium-sized lunch, something like a sandwich or macaroni and cheese with fruit; mid-afternoon Clif bar; light carb-y dinner of oatmeal or a wheat bagel. With the race being so late, I may just have a 2nd bagel an hour and a half before start time.

I posted the long, drawn-out story on the Princess 1/2 thread, so I'll spare you here, but UUUUUUGGGHHHH, the heat! :headache: I did my scheduled 9 miles Saturday, and wound up way overheated - dizzy, sick, cramping, dropped 5 pounds in sweat even though I took in 30 ounces of Nuun. I MUST slow down the pace more on those long runs. What really scared me was having the muscles across my upper back tighten and cramp - all I could think was, "Is this the sign of a heart attack?!" I slowed to a walk for 5 minutes and it eased, but wow - scary.

I'm also battling ITBS, though in its very early stages, so nothing devastating. Sports medicine doc pointed to the fact that the pain starts around 6.5 miles in on my long runs - when I've been cranking along on heavily canted concrete sidewalks. So I'll be rolling and stretching and aiming to keep most of my runs on the less canted asphalt and dirt trails of a nearby park.

I read your post over on the Princess thread too...sounds scary! Definitely better to slow it down than push too hard...be safe! The heat...and lack of rain...here has brought out the flippin' snakes! :crazy2: I saw 2 on my long run on saturday...that has never happened before, and I'm totally freaked out. I had planned on getting my long run in this week on friday since I'll be off of work (it's my B-day!! :cool1:) and I have alot planned for the weekend, but now I'm terrified and I'm not sure what to do. I have 6 miles scheduled...I guess I could do it on the treadmill at the gym, but I'm not sure what sounds worse...that or the snakes. :headache:

I would agree with Amanda, even at your slowest pace, you will have more than enough time to stop. I have a slower pace and stop at 95% of the photo ops...I'm a ham. And I still finish under the official time.

Thank you both! That's what I wanted to hear since I really want to stop for photos! I was hoping that somehow stopping for photos didn't count towards your time but I guess it's just more motivation to work on my pace the next few weeks :)

Feeling a bit discouraged... I have been having more and more trouble with ankle swelling. I went to doc and she decided my insulin levels were too high causing edema..so put me back on my medication at a low dose. It helped only slightly.

Then the heat got pretty bad over the last few days and after today's run my ankles looked so gross.. Just standing upright caused a crease in the skin near the shine because they were so swollen.

Add in that my time/mile has almost increased by a minute and I figured I should go in for new shoes.

The minimalist shoes I was wearing... well, apparently are not for me. I am now overpronating. (my previous shoes that I started running in, I didn't overpronate and the wear was super even) Now though, even just standing in my shoes my ankles tipped inward.

The first pair of shoes the salesgal brought out felt like I strapped bricks onto my feet.

The next pair, not too bad.. but really unattractive.

The third pair felt the best..weighed the least and are not horrible to look at (but not super cute either:rolleyes:)

For those who overpronate... do you all wear heavy shoes? These don't flex at all.:sad2: In the end these will be a much better shoe for me. I just really liked how light my other shoes were and how they looked... but.. seriously... I didn't like how my ankles were doing.

The sales person said I will always overpronate. This makes me sad too... no more cute light weight shoes for me?

Ok.. off my pitty box. I realize it makes me sound so silly and vain. "cute shoes" :confused3

thanks for letting me share...
