Official inaugural Tower of Terror 10 miler thread. September 29, 2012

ONE WEEK!!!!

Did my final "long" run this morning: 3.1 miles. Knee feels no better... but no worse, either. Two short runs to go!

What's everyone doing about cross-training this week? I'll go batty if I don't do anything, but I don't want to push it - think ill stick to a couple short sessions of yoga to stretch but not tax muscles.

Oh, and I bought glow-in-the-dark fabric paint. Think I'll try to make my Team Sparkle skirt twinkle in the dark!

The 'I'll go batty' part is the point of the taper...or so I'm told. Much rest and scaled back activity will have you raring to go on race day so you'll be at your peak...so take it easy this week! My plan is to get a 5 miler in tomorrow then 2 more 3 milers, but schedule is still a little wonky due to the rough week we've had, so I'm not sure how it's gonna go. I don't normally do any x-training the week of a race though...per my trainer :)

I was able to ge my last "long" run in on Thursday. I did 9.3 miles in 1:35-ish. Wasn't pushing it at all, and wasn't sore the next day at work (thankfully). I was hoping to overshoot the distance by a few miles, but it'll have to do. Going to go for a jog tomorrow, then M,Tu at work, then some sort of activity Wed, then we leave Thursday!!!!

Well I missed my run on Friday and Pilates today thanks for an evil cold of death! I slept from the time I got home Friday till 9 am this morning, made it out long enough to get breakfast, and then took another nap! I am hoping one more NyQuil induced deep sleep will allow me to get another run. I was hoping to get to the park that has a 4.5 mile look to do a test run of all my race stuff, but I think I may stick to the treadmill in case my sickness does me in. I have Wednesday off from work for Yom Kippur, so hopefully I can do my trial run then!

On the bright side, the release of the iPhone 5 means I was able to get the iPhone 4 as a free upgrade! Super excited. I just for an arm band for it and am downloading Nike + as I type. Also got some new Victoria's Secret sport panties in the mail today, so I really need to get a trial run in before next week!!

Only a week to go!!! :)

I think that makes 3 of us plagued by illness here at the last minute. Even though my doc said I COULD train through it, I did not have anywhere near the energy to do it. I'm hoping I get 3 miles in tomorrow. I was planning 3 runs between now and the race. Now I'm thinking I may only get 2 in and have to call it good. I've been training religiously for this for 11 months so surely this little bitty bug and the antibiotics won't stop me. Nope! Not me! No way!

That's how I see it. I did 10 on Sunday, so not too worried about this. At least mine is just a normal cold that seems to last 2-3 days, so sleep and juice is in order. I can usually figure out how long I'll be sick based on how long the kids in up my class were absent! I love my students, but they always get me sick at the worst times! :)

I got my final long run in last night. Ran for 10 miles even and had a time of 1:40 even. I thought that was pretty cool and was very happy with that. I hope I am able to do that well next week. Good luck ladies, I know that most of us are leaving during this week and are busy getting everything ready!

I did the last ToT 13K (was it three years ago?) and that road was well lit with portable lights. The rest of the course, as mentioned, will be fine. And a full moon will be cool!

I did that race too, and I remember that dirt & gravel road as dark, not well lit. So the person concerned about trip hazards or twisting ankle, I say yes, bring your light.
I was 55 when I did that race, so like drummerwife mentioned--old eyes.
Maybe ahoff has young eyes.:lmao:
There was light when there were flood lights, it is not like you couldn't see at all and completely dark, but dark enough on 75% of it to twist an ankle, or stumble on gravel and rocks, as I did.
Also, on some part of the course, on paved road, we ran on quite banked shoulders, which is hard on the ankles. It was much more banked and harder on the ankles than I was used to.

Good luck everyone with your last week of training and such. I ran 8 miles yesterday and plan on some 5 milers this week. I also take spin classes twice a week and do CrossFit 3 times a week. I will miss my CrossFit on Friday so I plan on going Mon, Tues and Wed. CrossFit has really helped with my running and I wouldn't miss it for the world. :thumbsup2

I'll be flying to Orlando on Thursday afternoon. I'm using this as a tune-up for the Wine & Dine Half in November. My last half marathon was in March and with the heat of summer I didn't get too many outdoor runs in this year.

I've officially started packing! So far, just toiletries and a little in my carry on...I got the suitcase out, but one of my cats thought it was a perfect spot to nap on under the window and I can't bear to move her, she looks so cute :). I'll have to try again tomorrow I guess. It's gonna be such a busy week, I absolutely cannot wait for this trip...we could really use the time away! I don't fly out until Friday after work...I'm getting antsy already!

:lmao: My stuff was packed and shipped out on Friday. I've been tracking it all weekend. I fly out Friday morning, so I want to know before I get on a plane if my costume arrived. :)

today i went for a run and when it was time to stop, my body was saying "that was fun! let's keep going, i want more!" :hyper: it was weird to not have to push myself to finish. i enjoyed the run, but wanted more. I hope this feeling lasts through saturday. All i have to worry about now is hydration, my weak spot when i'm at work.

See you all Saturday! :wave2:

Finished my 3 miles but it wasn't pretty. REALLY hoping I feel back to normal by Saturday!

I forced myself on a run, but only made it 2 miles before I felt dizzy. 2 miles is still better than no miles. Taking some medicine now and passing out!

Dizzy pretty much describes how I felt too. I know it sounds weird but from a fitness standpoint I was completely fine in that my legs felt strong enough, I was breathing fine considering how stopped up I am, and I never felt over exerted. My body as a whole just felt so weak. At 2.7 my body was screaming to stop and I was dizzy. I walked the rest of the way and went straight to bed. With 6 more days to go I'm sure I'll get enough strength back to finish.

Ran 1 mile with DH and his calf sprain started acting up again to the point he couldn't run. We went home and I decided to continue the run later in the day. Actually took a nap and felt wonderful afterwards. When I went out to run, ran 7 miles easily...none of my usual first two miles of aches and pains. I think I stumbled onto a new routine. Run 1 to loosen up earlier in the day, rest, then go for the long run. I felt amazing and still feel great now. Ready for the ToT!

Awesome!!!!

Any word yet on the runner tracking notifications???
Nope, I haven't seen anything yet. Tick-tock...

That makes sense, and I'm definitely not going for anything that wears me out. But I HAVE to stretch things out daily or I tighten up to the point of causing injury. Such is the life of an old, arthritic ex-dancer. ;)

Sparkle skirt is dotted with glow-in-the-dark paint. Suitcase is mostly packed. Bought a new knee brace that, while it doesn't magically stop the IT Band pain from coming, supports nicely and distracts my mind from the point of pain. Think I'm as prepared as is possible at this point! :thumbsup2

Now to get through the work week before driving over Sat. morning... :surfweb:

They usually don't have runner tracking ready till two days before the race. I have remembered it becoming available usually a day before the expo begins and they have a sign up for it at the expo.

Also, safe travels to all who are coming here for this race, hope to see some of you. If you see a guy in a Queen Narissa costume, come say hi! Lastly, take it easy this week and let your body be in full recovery before the race and enjoy yourself, take lots of pics! Only four more work days here, Thursday going to Food and Wine (it's preview night), Friday is friend's wedding (off work), then race day. Finally :woohoo:
