I've noticed a bit of a parallel with "Watchmen", a classic comic miniseries from back in the 1980s. For those interested in the parallel but not interested in reading the book, here's a spoiler: the story leads to a larger plot where Ozymandias, one of the masked heroes in the book who retired several years earlier, schemes to save the world and bring global unity by manufacturing a crisis -- the threat of an impending alien invasion from a parallel universe -- that results in the deaths of half of Manhattan. This almost seems like what Linderman is trying to do with Ted -- use him to create a crisis that would unite the world behind Nathan. It sounds a bit outlandish, but it's an excellent series, probably THE BEST series I've ever read, and highly recommended to everyone without reservation. The trade paperback can be found at any bookstore or online.
From the description in today's paper about what Hiro learns from FutureHiro, it may also parallel a bit of a classic X-Men story, "Days of Future Past."
Believe it or not, these things don't really bother me. Even though I'm thinking "this seems familiar", it's the different takes and twists that Tim Kring and the others behind the show give that keep them fresh. Plus, the show is so well done I'm willing to ignore a borrowed concept here and there.
I need to rewatch last week's episode, because I'm still trying to decide if Linderman, Mama Petrelli, and Hiro's dad are all working together, if they're benevolent, or what. Either way, I'm looking forward to tonight's episode.
