*****Official February 2015 Thread! Come check in and chat!*****

I'm going to assume so with the 60th coming. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I am managing expectations.

I'm preparing for it too. It just sucks when the park admission remains the same when so much is down for refurb. And it's not fair for people travelling such a long way, or those who may be having a once in a lifetime trip. You'd think they would've staggered the ride closures starting earlier this year.
Anyway.........

To pick up the mood, what's everyone's favourite non ride thing to do at Disneyland? Or if you haven't been before, what do you want to do?

On this trip, I want to take time to hang out in Mainstreet and I want to get some great family pics using PhotoPass+ around the park.

One of our favorite things to do is go to the Animation building and sit on one of the comfy couches and immerse ourselves in Disney. We love the different songs and scenes shown in that room. We can sit there for hours and relax, but DS6 only lasts about 10 minutes. :rotfl:

Yikes, I don't check in for a day, and look what happens to this thread! A lot to respond to!

So what's everyone plan for the first thing to do when they enter the park on their first day?

Generally, we go straight to Jungle Cruise, which was the only memory I had from my first trip to Disneyland as a child.

This trip will be a little different in that instead of catching the earliest flight possible we are taking a late afternoon flight that gets us in around 7:45 pm so we will not go to DL that first day. By taking a later flight and not going into the park that first day, we are hoping to avoid the first day nightmare and just enjoy 4 full days plus a half day on our last day.

DH and I flew into LAX in the late afternoon last summer. It was a *wonderful* way to start the vacation. We went over to Garden Walk, ate at the Cheesecake Factory, picked up our bottled water at 7-11, and were settled into bed at a reasonable hour. When it's just me for my solo trips, I tend to fly in that morning (for my upcoming Feb trip, I'll be leaving home at 3am), so it was really nice to have that time to relax the night before going to the parks!

We'll just have to make the most of what's open! Holidays are what you make it, right?! :)

Great outlook to have! I'll admit I was a bit bummed too--Splash and Soarin' are "must rides" typically, but it is what it is, and there's still plenty of rides that will be open!

I agree. Those are some pretty big closures. For me it is Splash and Soarin. Our kids love splash mountain and sing the song at home all the time. I admit I was so bummed I started looking at Hawaii instead. However after pricing it up:eek: I just resorted to what you said "holidays are what you make it". So we will live it up in other areas and stick with DL. What a sacrifice

I was also wondering how reliable some of it is.? Soarin was supposed to go down last year for the long refurb but did not. Their schedules seem to change quite a bit. I am still scratching my head at getting rid of a ride in Carsland that is only 2 years old. Does it really cost that much to operate and does no one really ride it? We liked it. Having a hard time believing that one. Also what is wrong with the WOC that it needs to be replaced or worked on?

The refurb lists will change multiple times between now and then. I remember with my trip last year, POTC was supposed to be down. I think it actually just recently went down--8 months after it was rumored to go down! And, like you pointed out, Soarin' has been rumored to be going down for months, rescheduled over and over again too.

Are they likely to announce more closures starting in February? If so, it seems like that would be a lot of rides down.

They will continue to refurb the refurb list every few weeks (days sometimes!) from now until forever, so it's always a "maybe refurb" list in my mind :confused3

People watching, ideally with a Dole Whip in hand!

This is another one of my favorite things. Thankfully, the Zoetrope is mesmerizing for my DD, so I can watch all the drawing/movies/songs/etc in the lobby, and she'll just watch the Zoetrope. Also a good way to avoid the rain!

I love that idea, especially since we'll be travelling with our (will be) 1 year old. Sounds like a good spot to take a break.

I have to admit.....my love of all things Disney really came about AFTER my first trip to Disneyland. I did not know what a Dole Whip was until after my trip when I started reading about the parks. So it's on my list of things to try. I didn't go on Soarin' on my first trip because the wait was crazy long, so I'm most bummed about it being down. Hopefully a miracle happens and it'll be open!

I agree that the list will change for refurbs. They traditionally don't drop down that many attractions on the same day. Wait and hope for a few adjustments to start dates. Time to think positively.

Still plenty to do even with those attractions down.

It has been quite a day up here in Canada, spent a lot of time watching and listening to the news. While I am on the West Coast now, I grew up in Ottawa and my sister and father are still there. My sister's office was in lockdown until 6:00 pm this evening.

So...a bit of a mood lightener is definitely called for!

My absolute favourite non-ride thing is the Mad T Party but we are going to be there Monday-mid Friday so we will miss it this trip.

However, I've never seen the neon lighting in Carsland and would love to catch it this trip!

Add another family for Feb 26-28th. Staying for the very first time at DLH! My kids are super pumped about the waterslides. It's never too cold to ride one of those.

And count me in as one who's bummed about Splash being down. I figured it would be down all of Jan and maybe early Feb, but not for three months. And I'm with PP who said it's probably more for economic reasons than it is for actual time needed for refurb.

Welcome to the thread, I have added you to the first post!

As for Splash being down...I might be the only one who is NOT sad to see this. It took me 6 DL trips before I finally went on it and...well...let me post a picture that I think speaks volumes.

I am second from the back, our son is in front of me and DH is in front of him.

Suffice it to say that neither I nor my son will be going back on that ride anytime soon.

@Aladora Hope everything is ok with your family. The world is a crazy place right now. Talking Disney is a good distraction.

I'm not going to miss Splash. My husband is gutted though. I was reluctant the first time because I was fearful of getting wet (Princess I know!). Watched many people get off dry as a bone and of course, I came off it drenched! Nothing worse than wet jeans :(

I really hope they don't close down too many dark rides at once. I had heard they wanted to spruce up all of them before the 60th but that they would stagger the closures. I hope that is the case.

If tons of rides are down, I am hoping they have some sort of ticket deal like the buy 3-day get 2 extra days they had a few years ago.

I think mine would be getting a coffee/cookie or pastry and people watching.

Thank you for your concern, everyone is safe and sound.

Thinking of our Canadian neighbors while you all try to grasp what is going on up there. So scary.

BTW- I love that Splash photo, too funny!

Non-Disney things we like to do: people watch, find a place near music for a random dance party, shop and eat!!

I can honestly say that our last trip was all about the rides! I've learned so much from this board (and even this thread) - I'm definitely taking notes so we can experience more things this trip. With that said, my stepson's favorite thing about our DL trip was the Jedi Training. He LOVED it! I think my favorite non-ride thing was the parades at CA; the kids loved them.

I'm sure I can find this if I searched but does anyone know off the top of their head what the firework schedule is like during February? I know in the "off" seasons, they're on the weekends only right? Last time we went it was in October and we didn't get to see them. This time, our first day at DL will be on a Sunday but we'll be in town on Saturday. Wondering if we should try to scope them out Saturday night or if they'll be doing them Sunday too...

I'm a little bummed to hear Peter Pan will be down, but we dealt with far more rides being down for refurb in May than we will this coming trip.

We might go straight to it's a small world since that was down last time and I want my son to experience it. I think he will get a kick out of POTC too and that was down last time as well.

We have 5 days in the park and will use them to the fullest. In May it was brutally hot so we spend a lot of time in the hotel and didn't even go to the park after the morning on our last day.

We get in pretty early so we will check in and head straight to the park so long as our room isn't ready yet. So excited!!

Oh, hello! We will be staying at The Peacock Suites from 2/22 until 3/1 then 3/1 and 3/2 at The Grand Californian! Eight full days in the park - not bad!

Planning is half the fun :thumbsup2
