Official Dopey 2017 Thread

I never cried at the end of a marathon/race, except like clockwork I finished the Dopey marathon, walk through bag check, sit down with my snack box on the ground, and commence uncontrollably ugly crying. Here's to doing that a 4th straight year in a row!

I fully support the ugly cry. I did it a lot during the full last year and then when I finished to meet my brother in law who finished way before me and my husband for a picture I think I scared both of them. We can all ugly cry together!

Yes, here's to the Ugly Cry - - I cried a ton during the marathon of this year's Dopey Challenge, including major ugly crying in the med tent with laughter which got the nurse volunteers laughing....So Ugly Cry it out! Just wanted to throw another support out there :)

I've only ever done 2, but I definitely cried heaps at the end of both my marathons!! Heck, I probably will when I complete the Wine & Dine challenge. Lol.

Here, here, to the ugly cry! I've definitely done it after many different races including my first marathon, all 3 Dopeys, and the first time I broke 4hr in the marathon. I know I'll be an emotional mess if I am ever fortunate enough to break 3hr. :scared: (<--- He's not scared, he's ugly crying!)

Awful run tonight! I really need to get my butt kicked back in gear with my eating. I quickly forget how awful I feel when I run when I have been eating like crap for awhile :( ... Anyone else struggle with getting back on the wagon after falling off bad with eating? I have a half in a few weeks so I gotta get some good runs in before then!

Since I figure the 'official' training doesnt start til June if I calculate right, I have been doing more normal diet / exercise the last month or 2. But I can tell when I 'wander' off course because, as you say, you feel like crap when you eat poorly... Then I will have to switch up to 'marathon weekend eating' when it gets to runs more that a 10k or so.. Will start being very careful what I eat Friday and Saturdays so the weekend runs go ok..

I find that my weight fluctuates wildly when I eat poorly. I have a tendency to retain water when I eat too high a sodium (ie, crappy) diet and it generally coincides with me getting a little spotty with taking my diuretic for bp. I have to look back at my longer term goals and refocus on what I am looking to do. Right now, I've struggled a bit with eating and am refocusing on the desire to drop 10-15 lbs prior to starting my marathon training cycle in July. When I am having an especially hard time with indulging and getting back to normal I have some photos of 335lb me (I'm 195lb right now, been as low as 179lb) that I use for "don't want to do that again" motivation. Good luck finding what works for you!

What! I thought we did this so we can eat what we want! Somebody lied to me! -.-

But in all seriousness, yes, I don't even sleep well, focus on work, or have the energy to get through the day when the diet goes off the rails, much less feel solid for a run. I'm not one of those 'organic or bust' types, but we all know what's good for us (lean meats, fruits, veggies, whole grains, healthy fats), and what's not good (I'm not going to name them because I'll start getting hungry).

I think adding in the exercise sometimes makes it harder to keep discipline. On the one hand, you might think, "I'm doing so good! Why would I sabotage it?" And on the other hand, "That was 10 miles. I will now eat the world."

This is me. I must have burnt the 15,000 calories I want to eat on that short run, right? I suppose it is all about finding the right balance.

Unrelated to eating - I wish they would release the "In training" shirts. I know they don't always have them but with this being my first and maybe only (yeah right, we all know this isn't possible) I would really like to get one!

Me, too! I've been watching for the "In training" shirts!

When do those of you who have done Dopey in the past usually fly in if you're traveling? I was hoping to come in Tuesday so I can get some rest and have a "relaxed" day of going to the expo without having to travel all day and get off the flight the day before races. Right now miles would be about 13,000 more for me to fly out Tuesday than Wednesday :( I'm hoping this changes when Sun Country releases since that usually pushes Delta down but who knows.

We've come in on Wednesday for the first three Dopeys arriving anywhere from 10 AM to 3 PM. We've had no problem getting settled at our hotel, going to the expo and having a relaxed dinner before getting back to the room at around 8 PM. I've never felt particularly stressed with our travel, but I certainly wouldn't have been opposed to coming in on Tuesday if it had been an option. Depending on your view of the 5K and 10K, whether you are heading out to parks or not, and other variables the races are done very early in the morning and leave a lot of time for recovery and to relax.

I am not a big expo shopper and we've had good travel weather, so those are two things that have worked in our favor with the Wednesday plan. Then again, as far as the expo goes, we got there around 4 PM this year and everything seemed to be still available and it wasn't particularly packed. Spending an extra day (or three) at Disney is probably never a bad thing so it's whatever works for you and whatever will make you feel comfortable; just letting you know that the Wednesday plan can be done and can be pretty "relaxed".

We fly in on Sunday (1/1) and fly out on Monday (1/9). I like to get there before the trip for two reasons. It gives me more time in the parks with the family, especially night time activities (fireworks). When the races come up I'm usually in bed by 5:30-6pm (during my normal life I'm in bed at 8:30pm).

The second reason is that I'm expecting Florida to be warmer than Wisconsin. While it's been warmer the last three years the trend has been that Sunday/Monday hasn't been nearly as warm as the races end up. The reason I do this is for heat acclimation. The body needs a few days to become accustomed to the temps and increase the plasma concentration to better deal with the heat coming from the cold. It probably helps some coming a few days early but isn't maximized since it takes about 10-14 days to heat acclimate. I typically overdress during my last Wisconsin workouts within that two week window to simulate being in hot conditions. It helps but isn't perfect.

I like to go to the expo at open, but I don't tend to buy much merchandise.

Personally, though I'd be more concerned with the weather flying out on Wednesday from Wisconsin because if we have a bad storm that could prevent you from getting to the 5K on Thursday and then the whole Dopey goes out the window. I feel like that happened to some people the first year (missed flights and then missed Dopey medal because no 5K).

We flew in Tuesday this year because of weather concerns coming from Nebraska as others said above, I didn't want to chance delays. When I did Dumbo at Disneyland we flew in on Friday which left no error for delays and that was September & was still worried until we landed.

We flew in on Tuesday last year to give us all of Wednesday. We will fly in on Tuesday again this year.

This is why it is important to use an application that tracks calories burned and calories consumed every day, and log every single thing that you eat/drink. If you have to log those chips or that ice cream, you are more likely to understand its impact on your diet and more likely to regain control.

Something else that works for me - if I feel like a snack, I make myself wait for 20 minutes. If I am still hungry, I eat something. Most times I find that the urge to eat something passes.

Good points on travel days! I would love to save the cash and fly in Wednesday as it sounds like it works for a lot of people but coming from WI I don't want to risk it with weather. I also think the extra day or so would be nice for dealing with the heat. I really struggled last year! My husband isn't coming until Friday and the kids are staying back with the in laws so it might be nice for a little more "quiet" time as well lol

Definitely! I use My Fitness Pal but I'm slowly trying to get back into it. I'm really good at saying a day is gone pretty early and not tracking the rest of the day. I'm only cheating myself when I decide I don't need to keep up

Now I'm super paranoid about my flight being cancelled Wednesday and not being able to make it for the 5k! Ha, well if it looks particularly bad weather wise in the days leading up to it I might just have to leave a couple days early and drive down.
