Official Dopey 2017 Thread

SO here's my first question; When entering my qualifying time, can I use my AG time from a half marathon? (it puts me under 4 hours...otherwise I'm at 4:41 finish)

For the NYC half, they will accept your net time of 2:13:52, not your age graded time of 1:52:40. This makes sense because what they are trying to do is put people who run similar paces in the same corral, so your actual pace is what matters for corral purposes, not your age-adjusted time.

@KGK: BTW, I found the DISboards by way of the disABILITIES! thread as well prior to our first family trip about eight years ago. It was very helpful when planning our first trip with our autistic son.

Spent the last several hours just reading the Marathon 2017 and Dopey 2017 threads -- should have remembered what a great source of information you all are!

Haven't been to Disney in a few years – The last few times there I needed a scooter to get around. A couple of nagging (permanent) issues left over from the military and years of "letting myself go" – well let's just say I barely fit into the seat restraints… My go-to board was disABILITIES! – a great source of information.

In October 2014 my DD told me it was time to run some races with her (She loves half's). And she was right, so I put myself on a diet, lost a few pounds and tried to run/walk. It wasn't pretty, but I've kept at it. Have lost 80 pounds and am running a lot faster now. For a fat old man lol. My goal is to run Boston Marathon, 2019 – at age 60. But in the meantime – It's DOPEY TIME !!!

Congratulations, that's fantastic! Good luck on all those upcoming races too. I'm not sure if Disney takes AG into account, myself though. I haven't noticed anything like that, but who knows? Maybe include it when you send in the proof of time. Worst case scenario is that they just don't use it right?

Respectfully, the worst case scenario is he gets moved to the last corral.

runDisney/TrackShack uses published finish times and requires web links as proof of time. If he puts in an AG time and is 'audited' and runDisney sees that the time does not match the published result, runDisney will toss it and move the runner to a later corral.

As stated earlier, the purpose of the corrals is to keep the flow of 25,000+ runners from congesting the course and to do that runDisney needs to use actual times.

And that is a pretty horrible scenario for someone who runs 10 minute miles.

@KGK - submit your best official race results for a half, whatever they may be. AG times are good for us old timers to be aware of, but rD only uses PoT to place you with other runners of similar speed without adjusting for any other variables.

We did that this year and will likely be doing it again in 2017. NYE in Epcot was awesome, even with a broken foot. I want to try MK next.

Only reason why I think crowds could be a little heavier than usual is that the college football national championship game is in Tampa on Monday January 9. It might not make a difference, but there is always that possibility. Good news is that whatever teams end up playing in that game won't know until the week before, so chances are they will not add a Disney trip in such short notice.

If the game had been in Tampa this year we would have been in the stadium instead of ESPN Zone outside of Epcot. If Alabama makes the game next year, I'll have t drive over. But that is an interesting thought about increased crowds that weekend.

I remember in 2015 watching the Packers and Cowboys playoff game at ESPN club on the boardwalk and there was a large crowd there of runners and other people. They had bleachers set up outside with TVs. It was over an hour wait to get inside so we just ordered a boardwalk pizza and sat on the bleachers.

That would be something. We only made it to the game this year because of Star Wars half weekend, and some work that came up at just the right time in Phoenix. :D RTR!

I wonder, though. A common question from Clemson fans was, "How do you afford to do this every year?" Might get a swell the weekend before and the day after. It could create an interesting atmosphere.

We arrived about 2 hours before the game, got a table and settled in. There were quite a few of us at my table, and it was a blast. I won a few prizes in the pregame trivia contests. The crowd was pretty evenly split between Alabama and Clemson fans. The game was exciting (too exciting for my tastes).

Great atmosphere to watch a game!

How is everyone doing? I know official training is still a bit out but a lot of us were doing something building up. I have been pretty inconsistent and really need to do better. We have a 1/2 this weekend but I'm doing it with a friend as a first and bucket list thing after an accident awhile back so I haven't been preparing as much as I probably should have!

Good luck with your half this weekend!

I've hashed out a basic frame of my training plan and I'm waiting for my "coach" to review it and give me feedback - this year is going to be QUITE different because of my race schedule (5K, 10K and Disneyland Half in September; Chicago Marathon in October; possibly the St. Jude Half Marathon in December) all before Dopey. Right now, it's basically just ramping up mileage and incorporating hills and speedwork ... I've got one day of cross-training, one rest day and five days of running planned right now, so it's basically going to be slow-going for a month or so until I get back in the swing of things.

In all honestly, Dopey is taking a serious backseat this time around. I've got a significant time goal for Disneyland that I'm training for, and then after that, Chicago takes priority. Dopey? I'm hoping to improve on my times this year and just have fun with all of my friends (Dis and otherwise) over the course of the weekend.

Same deal - I'm not technically going to be training for Dopey. Have a hopefully PR half in November and a 50k in December so I'll trust my fitness for those to get me through.

Signing up to run Dopey every year is part of my plan to ensure that I am continually training. To that end, I guess I don't really train specifically for Dopey and haven't for the last couple years. I want to stay in good enough shape during the course of the year to be able to roll out of bed and run a Dopey Challenge at any time of asking. I'm now starting to incorporate some better time goals to keep from getting stagnant in my training. It's all about keeping the carrot out in front and staying away from old, bad habits.

Good luck in Green Bay (right?)! Lambeau field! My marathon training for October starts Saturday after 2 weeks off. Then another two weeks off, so Dopey training starts October 16th. I should be rounding into shape just in time for Dopey. Excited!

What's that phrase, don't talk about me like I'm not here?

And this year, you better stick around for DATW :)
