I didn't see this question being asked anywhere so I thought I'd ask. What kind of information are you asked to provide for cake orders that are to be delivered to dinner? Just wondering because DBF's ex is coming to her son's bday dinner at Chef Mickey's and I let her know she could order a cake. She can place the order even though the ADR isn't in her name, right?

I called the Contemporary Resort to place the order, she took the cake info (size, flavor, filling, fondant color, greeting). When it came todetails I went over exactly what I wanted with Brian. I gave my reservation info and CC number (there was $1 charged that day and then reversed a day later.), was quoted $77 and with tax/gratuity it came to $99.

Thank you very much! That was very helpful.

We were just there a couple days ago. I ordered the cake from the Grand Floridian. Honestly, it wasn't that great. There were 10 of us (6 were kids) and NO one finished their cake. SIX kids. They eat anything with sugar on it. It was 40 or 50 bucks for the cake. My son was very pleased though so that's all that matters. We had it delivered to the private boat we rented for fireworks viewing.

I had originally called the cake hotline. They were very nice. You can pretty much order whatever you want. I was specific that I did not want a frozen cake (I see a lot of complaints about this). I had arranged for private boat for the fireworks viewing and they told me to call GF directly. That person was not the usual sweet Disney self--kind of seemed defensive. I was just asking questions (like, do I need to bring plates/forks?) and she said, "no ma'am. We do this everyday. We'll take care of it." I don't know--stuff like that.

I can't show you the picture because I don't have enough posts apparently. Sorry.

It was very nice to look at.

Does anyone know if CapnJack restaurant does cakes? My dh and I are celebrating our anniversary while we are down there and I wanted to order a special cake.

I called Private Dining at Kidani Village at Animal Kingdom lodge on May 2 for a cake to be delivered on May 5 at 2pm. I spoke to a very nice woman and gave her all the info. I wanted a 10inch vanilla cake with vanilla frosting strawberry and custard filling..no fondant with hibisuis flowers and Happy Birthday. We talked for quite some time. I gave her my credit card number and it was to be delivered to out room. Great no problem! Ha! 2pm came and went. I called private dining. They searched and searched and could find nothing. Not my cake, not my order nothing. Mind you this was about 45 minutes on the phone. I was offered a 6inch cake with no fancy decor. I finally said I could wait until the next day for it since I had 12 people and a 6 inch cake wasn't going to do it. She asked about decorations. They couldn't do the flowers so I asked for no flowers. Asked for swirled mickey heads and Happy Birthday. She asked if I wanted it in the shape of mickey and I said no. She said that due to mix up they would only charge me base price of the cake $45 plus all the taxes and tip so $59 but usually it is more expensive with the decorations I wanted. So next day at 2pm ...there is no cake. At 2:30 we call and it is then found and brought up. OMG I was so dissapointed. It was awful. It was a white frosting cake with mickey head confetti around it and a white choclate mickey face (no ears) in the midddle with a small bunch of fake plastic flowers on the side. The cake didn't taste great and I was just so dissappointed that even after screwing up and losing my order they really did not even try to decorate this cake. I think my cake ordering days are over! :confused3

WOW! That is really a shame!!! :sad2: Sorry it turned out badly for you. Did you get in touch with them to say how disappointed you were with the service & the cake??

No I didn't. After the hour I spent on the phone with them the day before I was just over it. My sister enjoyed the surprise of the cake and we joked about the creepy mickey face. I did comment about it on the survey I was emailed after our trip.

Yes. In fact, it's the only restaurant at Downtown Disney serviced by Disney's Cake Ordering Hotline (phone number is in the first post).

I think my cake ordering days are over! :confused3

Oh no! :sad2: What a terrible experience. It sounds like they took the standard premade cake and just slapped some decor on it.

If you have time, it would be super helpful if you could post a picture of the cake here, what you paid, where you got it, etc. as a warning for future DISers...

I ordered a mini wedding cake with vanilla cake with white chocolate mousse filing, pink buttercream with white mickey head dots, and a white chocolate mouse ear hat topper for my DD's 2nd birthday. Her name is Lexi. I specifically said and then spelled her name for the person on the private dining line since I know that many people want to add an "e" on the end of it. This was the Contemporary as we were eating at CG for dinner on her birthday.

Our waitress asked me how to pronounce her name. I thought that was odd since it's not hard to pronounce Lexi. Well, they wrote "LeZi" on the cake board instead. Seriously? Even after I spelled it? Saying the word "X" doesn't even sound like the word "Z." Fine, whatever. I was more concerned with the baby's reaction since she wasn't feeling that well this evening.

This misspelling aside, I have to say that the cake was really not that good, so I'm glad that I didn't order anything bigger. We left over 1/2 of it. One DD had a small piece, FIL had a small piece, and I had a small piece. The buttercream was the worst that I've ever tasted. It was like spooning pure sugar in my mouth. Now, I LOVE sweet things, but this was just not even edible. The white chocolate mousse was tasty, but it tasted more like buttercream should taste, not white chocolate mousse. At least the white chocolate mickey ear topper was quality chocolate. A final complaint is that the cake was obviously taken out of a freezer or refrigerator as it had condensation all over the outside of it. At least it was only $35 because if it were an expensive cake, I would have been very upset.

Do all cakes with buttercream taste the same or do they have better frosting for more expensive cakes? I am very wary of ordering a cake ever again if this is what it's going to taste like.

I agree that Disney's use of the term "mousse" for its fillings is pretty misleading—none of them have the sort of light, whipped quality one associates with mousse.

I do find that the buttercream on Disney's pre-made podium cakes is more gritty-sweet than the buttercream on its custom cakes, but I may be imagining it. Either, way, it doesn't really explain your experience with a custom cake.

I think it all really comes down to personal taste. Some people say Disney cake is the best they've ever had, others say it tastes like cardboard. I've tried many different kinds of buttercream over the years, ranging from those that taste like they are almost straight butter to those that taste like they are almost straight sugar. To me, Disney's falls somewhere in the middle, but everyone has different taste buds. :teeth:

Ok I tried to order an 8 inch Haunted cake from Pat at the Grand Floridian. I had reviewed the pics here on the DIS and someone said they paid around $65 for theirs but it was from the Contemporary. We have 16 days until our trip so I was giving her the two weeks some have recommended.

She left me a message and said that there is no way they could do that cake for any less than $125.00 because of the fondant work and that they would need more time for the skulls but could possibly due the chocolate tombstones. She mentioned they could do a screen print on top of the cake for that price. No way. Chef Brian did a great cake for us last year for around $75.00 so I don't want a super plain cake for that price.

I have a budget of about $80.00. I left her a message asking if they could do mostly buttercream and limit the fondant work to reduce the price. I mentioned screen printing the side with the HM wallpaper and still incorporating the black roses and HM picture frame and just eliminate the skulls and coffins. I haven't heard back from her yet. Does this seem doable?

Was wondering if I should call tomorrow to confirm 2 cakes I had ordered?

I would! :thumbsup2

Really? I've never seen Brian charge less than $100 for that elaborate cake...

Not from the GF. :( Theirs are some of the highest prices on property. The screen print around the side will require fondant over the entire cake. Maybe if you eliminated everything but the screen print? Or had them cover the cake in buttercream swags instead of the screen print but kept the roses, frame, skulls, etc.?

Thanks Lurkyloo. Maybe they both listed the price incorrectly? It did seem awfully cheap.

Brian did a screen print around the outside for us last year but I couldnt remember if it was fondant, it was mostly buttercream everywhere else. We paid $75

After months of lurking and asking basic questions, I'm finally getting into my ordering zone! I was hoping for some guidance from the wonderful lurkyloo and all the other cake-experts on here. What started out as a simple celebration of DH's accomplishment has turned into a Disney trip with celebrations out the wahzoo!

First, my BIL and SIL are celebrating their one year anniversary on our trip. Ironically, we have breakfast at CRT on their actual anniversary, which we noted on the ADR. My question is if they tend to do anything special for anniversaries or if I should go ahead and order something like the dessert slipper? This will be their first time to Disney and SIL is OBSESSED with princesses, so the whole thing works out really well in terms of timing... I just want to make sure there's ample pixie dust.

Second, we are doing an Illuminations Cruise to celebrate DH's achievement and I wanted to order a cake for the boat. I know YC does the cake which makes it super convenient... I'm just wondering how Disney does with obscure characters? DH's FAVORITE Disney characters are from Tailspin (whoa, remember that show???) and Robin Hood. I would LOVE to try to do Tailspin but am afraid it's really out there even for Disney and I'm also a little worried Robin Hood might be the same. Has anyone had luck with the more 'offbeat' Disney characters?

Finally, we are celebrating DD's 5th birthday since family will be together and it's only 2 weeks early, so I wanted to do a mini cake for her. We have an ADR at Garden Grill that I was thinking of doing the cake with but was wondering if people had experiences with cakes at GG. Also, can the mini cakes have a 'theme' - we were thinking Rapunzel for DD but I'm definitely not picky.

We are just over a month out from the trip, so I was going to start calling to line things up. My one concern is if the ball gets rolling, is it difficult to stop should something come up? DH is military and leave has been granted but I'm always nervous... We will be in Florida a week before Disney, so it wouldn't be last minute, but I don't want to start something now that might be hard to pull back from later.

Sorry so long! Thanks so much for any advice and guidance.

Thank you lurkyloo:)

Have fun! :goodvibes

Wow, I knew the Contemporary had the best cake deals, but those really are a steal! I just don't think the GF is going to even come close to those numbers at that level of detail. :worried:

My advice is always to expect nothing and be surprised if you get something. I think your SIL will go ga-ga for the slipper, and since it's not super-expensive, it'll be worth it even if the restaurant happens to give them a free cupcake or something.

They should be able to find clip art of any Disney character, but I'd be prepared with images to send them just so you get exactly what you want.

Garden Grill is serviced by Epcot's bakery, which can do only basic 6"/8"/10" round cakes. I'd talk to the Yacht Club Bakery about whether they can deliver a mini cake to GG for you.

Also, can the mini cakes have a 'theme' - we were thinking Rapunzel for DD but I'm definitely not picky.

Sure! I think having Rapunzel's braid wrap around the tiers might be cute. Just know that the more elaborate the decor, the more expensive it is.

Nope! :thumbsup2

Hope this helps!

In the words of DD's face Crush-man: "You so totally rock!!!"

Can they put a topper on the cake or can we add one at the last minute? My MIL has a small Tailspin toy that we thought would work if they can't do something for the cake.

Do you think it might be easier to do the mini cake on the cruise as well? DD is planning on wearing her Rapunzel dress and pretending we are going to see the lanterns like in the movie - her idea and I am all about her creativity - and that way it's all through YC and any leftovers of both cakes will go straight into our fridge after. There will be 7 of us total so no cake is too much.

Thanks again for all your insight and help
