I know - I really wanted a private cruise but since I am not the one turning 6 that day...I was overruled...apparently Capt Hook and crew are more exciting than a just us:rolleyes1 Not sure why?!
Have you been on the cruise? When we went to the reception part, there really isn't anywhere to sit comfortably to enjoy a cake. There are some chairs along the wall, but no table and chairs. Also, there was already cake and desserts there. Additionally, you have to get in line to meet Smee and Hook anyhow, so eating a cake in line is awkward.

It was basically, wait for the doors to open, grab some food, wait in line while eating food, picture with Smee/Hook, leave the room to board the boat

We had a lot of fun on the cruise. There wasn't much time though for snacks. We did grab some cotton candy to take on the boat but by the time we waited in line for the pictures with Hook and Smee, it was only a few minutes before we had to line to up to go. There might not be time for cake! When you check in, maybe let them know you're having a birthday - they pick a child to carry a flag and lead everyone to their boats. They picked my 9 year old. She was so stinking excited. There was a mark next to our name, so they had already picked her. I don't know how they decide that. I don't know if there would be enough time to enjoy cake - especially with everything else going on (music, lots of kiddos running around).

We will order to have with dinner. Thank you for all the info!!

Oh, we had a lot of fun on the cruise as well. And I would definitely let everyone know it is his birthday, he might get the flag.

I'm trying to order a mini-cake to be delivered to Be Our Guest, and I contacted Magic Kingdom cakes via the email on page one of this thread. They're telling me that the mini cakes are only available in chocolate or vanilla, and with only vanilla buttercream or chocolate mousse as the fillings. And, they said that i can't get fondant icing, either. I mentioned this thread to them, and told them that I've seen other options for the mini cake, but they told me that the Contemporay won't do anything but the standard offering at this time. Does anyone know if this is correct? Or would I get a different answer if I contacted the Contemporary directly?

You can try writing back to them with your exact requests and asking them to pass it along to the Contemporary, which has worked in the past. Otherwise, just contact the Contemporary pastry team via the email on Page 1. If THEY tell you to go thru MK Cakes, explain what happened.

Is that a recent change WDW wide or just from Contemporary bakery? I had a 2 tier-mini cake from the Epcot bakery in April 2013 that had fondant. Just curious for future reference.

I read through the first few posts, and couldn't find an answer. Which bakery services the Brown Derby? Thanks!!

Please help me out my mind at ease that I did the right thing. I always order from Its Tasty Too! because she does amazing work, her cakes taste great and she doesn't charge an arm and a leg. However, it slipped my mind to call her about making the cake and now she's booked up. So I called GF hoping they could make something and it wouldn't be extremely expensive. The one detail my DD asked for was a pink dolphin, then later she added a mermaid. I was told they could only do an image of the dolphin and it was $15. We went back and forth because I didn't want to spend $50+ on basically a podium cake with a pink dolphin image. So we settled on adding waves to the sides and shells at the bottom, this brought it to $80, which was actually a bit more than my max of $75. Now I'm having second thoughts. Does that seem like a lot for what I'm getting? Its a 6 in cake, just FYI.

No it doesn't sound like too much. The Grand Floridian's 6 inch cakes are actually REALLY elaborate and they're incredibly creative. I recently got a 6 inch 3 layer fondant Alice in Wonderland themed cake and it was AMAZING! It was ordered for me and he didn't ask for anything in particular except "Alice in Wonderland themed cake" and they came up with the design.
They piped grass on the sides and on top of the cake and some kind of really intricate pattern (I don't know how to describe it? lol). There were little mushrooms on the sides and on top, a teacup, white roses with painted red edges, glittery hearts sticking out of the top of the cake which I loved, even more grass and leaves, an image of Alice, the Mad Hatter and the March Hare. It was incredible and they really put in a lot of time and effort into the cake even though it was just 6 inches. It looked like the March Hare, Alice and the Mad Hatter were having their tea party in a garden. So cute!

I think the cake you ordered is going to come out really cute and the price sounds about right. The cake I had was more than what you were quoted, $95 I think plus delivery charge to my room.

I ordered DD's Minnie Mouse cake for her 6th birthday. Ordered from Pat. I want a pretty basic cake - 6"vanilla w/vanilla - I know we really were stepping out the box! lol
It will be red w/white polka dots and ruffles. A chocolate Minnie head with bow and balloons. Quote was $105. I did not give much direction - but said I did not want a super flat cake and am sure it will be cute. Because I am a crazy planner the cake is not until May - but will post pictures when we return.

Next I will order the cake from Its Tasty Too. Trying to get an idea of my head count first! That one will be Inside Out themed - will send the figurines from the Disney Store like we did last year. That worked really well!

Side note: They can't put fondant on a 2-tier mini cake. You'd have to do a single-tier cake for that.
Thanks, Carrie. I emailed the Contemporary, and Chef Brian said they could do a mini cake with the grey stuff for $40, $5 more than what Magic Kingdom cakes quoted, but that's fine. I did go ahead and ask him if they could do fondant on it, but he didn't reply.

Before I contacted him, though, I had asked Magic Kingdom cakes how much a 6" fondant cake would be, just a plain one with no bells and whistles. That was two days ago, and they were supposed to be checking with the bakery, but they haven't replied.

Do you have a guess as to how much a 6" fondant cake would be, if it didn't have any additional elements? I'm just looking for a Belle theme, with swags on the side and a rose piped on top. Just trying to decide between a mini cake and a 6" fondant. There's only two of us, so I'm worried the 6" will be way too much cake, but I tight be worth it if the price isn't too much more than the mini cake.

We had this cake made by the Contemporary last September. It is slightly bigger than a mini cake but not by much. It was fondant covered and cost $65. There were 5 of us and there was more than enough for a decent piece each. We also had a six inch cake made and this was too much, even after eating leftovers in the room some ended up being thrown away.

Checking in with a summary of our most recent order - a Haunted Mansion themed mini cake! I placed the order with the CR bakery and they delivered it to our room at WL. I ordered a vanilla cake with vanilla frosting and purple fondant, Haunted Mansion accents and a 2D image of hitchhiking ghosts. This was a surprise for our three boys, who love haunted mansion, like cake and appreciate good theming everywhere. The cost was a silly $60 plus taxes and delivery. About one year ago, I paid $68 for a 6" cake with fondant, decorated around the sides with fondant cut outs and sporting a hand-painted white chocolate 3D goofy on top. So the price of this is just silly, but it is what it is.

Before you see the photos, I'll say that this cake is not my style. I loved the very simple cakes we ordered last year - the goofy 6" in January and the mickey mini cake in August - all fondant, very clean lines, etc. Because I prefer very simple decorations, I originally envisioned just plain purple fondant with a few black dots piping the edges and the ghost 2D chocolate resting on the middle tier. Now I laugh at myself when I think about my vision for this cake, because the CR bakery produced something that was way more fun and exciting for our kids! The boys LOVED it and were very impressed! They enjoyed it WAY more than what I had in my mind, so yay for the CR bakery!

The tiny black roses on top were sugary and crunchy, the whole mess of black frosting and drapey goopy white stuff was a huge hit. The little chocolate bat was a nice touch and the hitchhiking ghost part was a fun and festive addition. This cake went faster than any other we've ordered so far. I took a few bites and it was amazing. It's that frosting to cake ratio that lurkyloo mentions - so much better in the mini cake. The fondant was outstanding as usual and the cake stayed moist for a couple days. It was by far my favorite dessert of the trip. We ate it for dessert, with breakfast and then with breakfast again the next day.

Next year, we'll stay at either BC or Poly for Marathon Weekend, and I'll miss working with the CR bakery!

Quick question, as I have to place my cake order today. I'm going to do a simple Belle-themed cake -- yellow, with swags, and a rose on top. I can either get a mini-cake with fondant for $50, or a 6" with fondant for $50. As there's only two of us, I don't need a bigger cake, so size isn't an issue, but it's hard not to go with the better value. I'm just wondering if a simple 6" cake would look as "fancy" as the two-tiered mini cake. It's for my daughter's 16th birthday, so I'd want whichever would look more impressive. Thanks for any advice!

Here was my very simple $35 mini-cake (made my Contemporary and delivered to our dinner at BOG). It tasted great and looked beautiful. It is so dark in the main dining room that we didn't realize that the yellow was so fluorescent until we got it outside!

I am new to ordering cakes and tried to go back and read many pages of this thread. I want to order a cake for my DD while eating at Be Our Guest. Can you order from Its Tasty Too and have it delivered into the parks? If not, have you ever ordered a cake for the Magic Kingdom? Thanks for your help!
