Cake saga continues :( my inspiration cake (inside out theme) was denied. I don't really understand copyright issues for this particular type of item. if it's a Disney character done by a Disney company, how can there be copyright issues? But no matter...I'm actually very flexible regarding character and just want a cake with "wow" factor!

I'm supposed to get a call from a chef at this point to help me design my cake :) does anyone have pics of a Disney created cake with any of the following: the incredibles/mr incredible, Star Wars (yoda, Death Star Mickey, etc), or wreck it Ralph?
Thanks!

We celebrated my daughter's 1st birthday Friday at Tony's Town Square. Here is the inspiration photo I sent the contemporary bakery.

I asked the Mickey heads be piped on in alternating red and black.
Here is the cake we got.

It's cute but I was a little disappointed. I wanted larger Mickey heads that my daughter would be able to recognize. And they did pink instead of red. I regret the white chocolate Mickey because it was a waste. That thing is huge and really, what the heck are you supposed to do with it? We took it back to our room but left so early to get to the airport yesterday and forgot it in the fridge. I ordered almond cake with vanilla buttercream. The cake was a little over sweet but delicious. I'm glad I got almond. We had 6 adults and cake left over. I ordered the 6". There was a mother and daughter dining next to us and we gave them the rest of the cake to enjoy. I'm not really sure if I would order a cake again. It tasted great but it didn't look quite like I imagined. The process was easy enough to order though.

Wow - the resulting cake is very different from the inspiration photo - in part because of the small mickey heads, and in part because the entire color scheme is different!

From what I've been told, the issue is more with the ability of the chef to correctly re-create a character likeness "on-model"... Basically, Disney doesn't trust them all to perfectly re-create those particular likenesses, and they don't want something like this R2-D2 cake (made by Animal Kingdom Lodge years ago) making the rounds on Cake Wrecks...

This is the cake we ordered from the bakery at AKL back in August - the chefs there were very friendly and helpful in answering emails, the cake was however delivered 30-40 minutes late by private dining who couldn't seem to get it together! Total cost including gratuity etc was just under $72 in the end. :) It was 8'' vanilla cake, with chocolate mousse filling and buttercream all around the outside. Can't see on the photo but it was all glittery - too cute!

Back to normal life with my cake report. We arrived a little early for our California Grill reservation so we could have a drink at the lounge. We went upstairs and sure enough, our reservation ticket had a big old cake stamp on it. I noticed it immediately and tried to lead my party past the podium to the lounge. We literally sat down and they called us. I went to the hostess and told them we were 30 minutes early and wanted to see if we could wait for a window table. She told me she would look into it and let me know.

I returned to the lounge and we ordered drinks. Joanne was our awesome server. Again, less than 10 minutes later the hostess came by to tell me there was a window seat available. This was one of the best tables in the restaurant! We were floored. They had even decorated the table with Mickey confetti. This alone made up for the surprised being spoiled, but we were further rewarded with our awesome server, Shannon. Our best service of our vacation, hands down.

Fantastic dinner, followed by Shannon bringing out the cake. It was simpler than I had hoped, but it was so delicious! We snacked on leftovers for days! Buttercream frosting over chocolate cake and strawberries. $90 from Chef Brian.

We enjoyed coffee and cake while watching Holiday Wishes fireworks. It made for one fantastic first night!

Just read the Tony birthday cake review. Ironically we asked for large Mickey heads on our cake as well and got the polka dot variety. Cute, but really didn't make much of an impact.

I agree. I was definitely underwhelmed with the little polka dot mickeys after expecting larger heads around the cake.

Here is the cake Chef Brian did for us that we had for my father's birthday dinner at Artist Point. I had initially asked for a Goofy/baseball theme. However, they needed permission from legal. Even though I made my request 5 weeks prior to our reservation, a few days out Chef Brian still had not heard back from legal, so we had to come up with something else. We decided on a "fun goofy cake." Cake came out amazing and tasted fabulous! It was yellow cake with fresh whipped cream with fresh raspberries mixed in for the filling. Cost was $104. Unfortunately this was the best picture I got, and I forgot to take a picture of the inside. image.jpeg

I can't believe I'm going to ask this after seeing all these gorgeous cakes, but is there such a thing as a standard sheet cake at Disney?

We are going to Disney with dd's dance team this summer & her birthday is the next to last day we are there. I would love to have cake with everyone, but between dancers & siblings, I'd need something that would feed at 40-50 people. Standard white cake with buttercream frosting & a Disney design is totally fine -- I don't need anything fancy -- just something that will feed everyone, LOL.

Also, it's possible that we will be at one of the water parks on dd's birthday -- would anyone deliver there, or could we have it delivered to our hotel (POR)?

Thanks in advance!

I just put my order in with Chef Brian at the Contemporary to make a birthday cake for my husband in January. It's an 8 inch with fondant and the price is $136. Here is the inspiration picture that he'll be using, and of course I'll post pics of the actual cake once we have it:

Yes! They start around $80 for a 1/2 sheet cake that feeds 50, or $120 for a fill sheet cake that feeds 100. An outside cake vendor might meet you in the water park's parking lot with a cake. I'm not sure how you'd get a Disney cake delivered there, since there are no table-service restaurants and I can't find numbers for the counter service places. Might be better to have it delivered to the hotel and bring it in. Or go pick one up at BoardWalk Bakery or even Publix!

I don't know that much about cake decorating, but I'm wondering if the issue with both cakes was that the large mickey heads were fondant on a fondant cake and the cake you got was buttercream? Or at least it appears that way. I don't think a big fondant head or even big amount of frosting would stick to the side of a buttercream cake like that on it's own. I could be wrong but that may be why they keep them tiny.

Agreed, but I initially asked for a fondant cake and changed it to buttercream. I get the idea of the fondant being too heavy, just wish they would have let me know. Really, no complaints here...the night was perfect!

Thanks for those pics, lurkyloo!! I still haven't heard from the chef :( Don't want to be a pest but time is ticking, especially with the holidays thrown in there!

Here is the mini cake I ordered from the Beach Club Resort for my mom's birthday during our recent trip the first week of December. The cake was almond, with raspberry mousse filling. It was delicious, but we had so much food all week, we ended up only eating the top portion! She was so surprised and I'm very glad I ordered the cake for her. Beach Club Private Dining was very easy to work with, everything was as I asked, and the cake was delivered to our room as promised. I pre-ordered the Cinderella slipper dessert for her birthday dinner at Narcoosee's, and we received complimentary mini cheesecakes since we both had birthdays that week!

I am so glad that your experience with Y&BC Fine Dining was as pleasant as mine (post #3052). They do a great job on the in room set up. I love your cake with the larger Mickey heads and the Santa hat topper is awesome.

Going for a mini cake for our Halloween trip next year but will definitely keep this design in mind for the 2017 trip (since I plan on using Y&BC again)!
