You can get Star Wars themed cakes from the Contemporary bakery. We had one in July at the Wilderness Lodge. It was a Storm Tropper screen printed on a piece of chocolate on top of the cake. I checked with Sci-Fi Dine-In also but they wanted more so I went with the Contemporary.

Thank you for this! I feel better now:)

After seeing all the wonderful creations on this thread, I just called and ordered a cake for an upcoming dinner at California Grill Sept 28th! I don't remember the woman's name who answered the phone, but she was very helpful and accommodating. I requested an Oswald the Lucky Rabbit mini-cake, and after she put me on hold briefly, she verified it could be done. I was very surprised they would be able to do Oswald, but she said they had the graphic! The total cost was around $50 and I'm assuming there will be a 18% charge added to that too.

Just excited to see what's delivered to the table (and even more excited to taste it)!

So after reading all through these threads and seeing the amazing pictures I've been inspired and ordered a custom cake for hubby for our 13th Wedding Anniversary on the 6th October :)

Spoke via email with Brian from the Contemporary as we are eating at the California Grill that evening. I asked for a Donald Duck nautical themed cake and Brian sent me a picture of a cake that was just perfect!

I will be sure to come back and post photos after our trip :)

Hey everyone! I'm new to the boards, and learning the ropes!

I have a mini cake question:yay:

My mama, sis, and myself have a big girls only trip next year and my sis and I want to get my mom a mini cake, just to say thank you for EVERYTHING, because moms are the best!

My sis and I like the idea of doing a mini cake with the wallpaper from the Haunted Mansion. Is that something that can be done with a mini cake? I've seen it with larger cakes. If it is possible, would that have to be done with a fondant? Mom isn't the biggest fondant fan, but it's not THAT big an issue if fondant is the only way to make the wall paper happen!

Any advice is helpful! Thank you so much!!:cheer2:

You'd definitely need to ask the pastry team that's making your cake. I can tell you it does need to be a fondant-covered cake because they screen print the pattern onto to fondant—and it is very possible that a mini cake is too small for this to work.

However, a 6-inch cake may not cost that much more than a really elaborate mini cake, and it might be a better candidate for the pattern. Either way, they always put buttercream under the fondant, so you can just peel it off if you don't like the taste.

Thank you for the information. We're still early on in planning the details, so I've got a bit more homework to do. I'll keep everyone updated as we move forward!

Yes! And they are cute! They cost $12.50 plus tax and they only come in white chocolate with chocolate mousse.

WHEN did they start doing this at CRT? I'm absolutely ordering this with my breakfast birthday in October! SQUEE!

Thank you for the information on this thread! DD has several food intolerances including gluten, dairy and several other things. She is allergic to an ingredient in the Babycakes frosting so I thought there was no way we would all be able to enjoy a cake for DH's birthday for our upcoming trip. I was wrong- DD can have the Allergy friendly cake listed on the first page of this thread. :yay:

We are staying at the Grand Floridian so I contacted the GF cake line. I left a message last Monday and my call was returned by Pat on Thursday. I ordered a 6 inch chocolate allergy friendly cake with white frosting and asked about having a chocolate figure on top. Pat told me the molded chocolate figures are too big for the 6 inch and asked if I wanted a larger size allergy cake. Instead, I asked about the 3 inch Mickey that I read about on the 1st page of this thread and she said that wouldn't be a problem for a 6 inch cake (although she did seem surprised that I knew a 3-inch molded Mickey existed). She had to contact the vendor to make sure the dark chocolate did not have gluten or dairy (it does not, but it is made in a facility that processes gluten and dairy on the same line- DD does not have Celiac so this is not a problem for us). The previous pictures I have seen of allergy cakes look a little plain, so I am glad we are able to have a decoration that will jazz it up a little bit and have a touch of Disney. I was quoted $23 for the cake and $5 for the dark chocolate Mickey. I feel that this price is VERY reasonable and actually costs less than the gf/df cakes at bakeries in my area. I plan on picking up the cake at Gasparilla Grill.

While I was on the phone, I also ordered a gf/df dark chocolate Cinderella slipper dessert for my daughters to share at 1900 Park Fare. Instead of filling the chocolate slipper with mousse, they will fill it will extra berries since they don't have a gf/df recipe for the mousse. I was quoted $15 for the slipper.

Thanks again for all of the information on the thread! I will post pics after our trip in a few weeks :)

Has anyone had a Haunted Mansion cake recently? And does anyone know if I can get one from Boardwalk Bakery? These are some of the pictures I found here on the Dis.

I love the attention to detail on this cake. My DD and DSiL are running in the 10 mile ToT run, but I haven't seen any ToT cakes.

All of these cakes are custom, not standard, so if you want one, just send the bakery photos of what you want and they will attempt to replicate it.

There have been a couple of TOT cakes posted on the DIS over the years.

Thank you for the ToT cake pics; they are cool. I do think I like the HM cakes better though.

I know I can call the Hotline, but do you know an email address for Boardwalk Bakery so I can email them a pic? When I ordered the cake for my DS at Si-Fi I called the hotline but I didn't want anything as specific as the HM cake.

Hello everyone!! Just a quick question. If you were on the dining plan, would you still go ahead and order a special cake? The thing is, we get the desserts included, but I would love something a little extra special but dont want to over do it!! It is just DH and me by the way so its not like I could order a sheet cake lol!! What are your thoughts on this??

When you call them, ask for the address of the person who will be making your cake. It may not be the same person I have an address for. :thumbsup2

Well, I would, but I'm CRAZY! The dining plan's already a big waste of food, why not waste a little more? :teeth: Maybe just get a minicake...

LOL!!! What is the smallest cake/treat I can order? I see the nice CRT crown above, but what about cake? I just dont want it to go to waste!! ADRs are at Narcoosee, Yachtsman, and CG :)

I've seen so many mixed reviews for the cakes at Animal Kingdom Lodge that I was compelled to order one when we stayed there a few weeks ago.

Ordering Process
The process went smoothly at first—Private Dining put me in touch with the pastry chef, and she was super-responsive via email. We sent several messages back and forth and got everything nailed down pretty easily, although I was told I had to get a 6-inch because they don't have the "equipment" to do minicakes. She approved the design and gave me a price, then told me to call in my order to Private Dining, which I did.

However, a few days later I got a strange call from Private Dining asking me if I still wanted to place an order for a cake. This kinda panicked me, so I called them back and was told they had to do some research and would get back to me. They never did. I called again after the weekend and learned from Private Dining that the pastry chef I'd been working with had left on a 2-week vacation without giving them any info about my cake, and that all my correspondence with her was tied up in her private email account, so they didn't even have the photos I'd sent.

:headache:

I re-sent all the info and went over everything again. Private Dining called me the day before and said they were making the cake right then and wanted to confirm the details of the exterior color (which I did, and they still messed up, but it wasn't a huge deal). This is how it turned out...

Location: Animal Kingdom Lodge (Jiko)

Size: 6-inch cake

Flavors: Red velvet cake with cream cheese mousse filling, not the cream cheese buttercream frosting I'd requested.

Price: Quoted $65 ($35 for 6-inch cake + $30 for fondant decorations), charged $23 :confused3

Inspiration Photos:
I found this cake online and asked to have a modified version as a 6-inch. I found a separate cake to get inspiration for the hippo on top...

How It Turned Out:
The cake looked a lot better than I was expecting, considering it seemed to have been hastily assembled by assistants while the pastry chef was out. They didn't use a contrasting color for the leaves like in the original photo, and the pond was a little rough around the edges (literally!), but the hippo was adorable and really well-made. It was a surprise for my husband, and he thought it looked great!

(Sorry these photos aren't better—new camera!)

The only thing I was really disappointed about was the use of cream cheese mousse filling instead of cream cheese buttercream frosting, which I had made a big deal about twice: once when I placed the order, and again when they confirmed it. I think they just assumed I meant "filling" instead of "frosting" because it's what they use in most of their cakes, but I really really dislike Disney's cream cheese mousse filling, which is way too cheesecake-y for my taste.

For some reason, when we got the bill for dinner, the cake was listed at only $23, maybe because they felt bad about losing the order or because it had been created by assistants instead of the pastry chef...?

At any rate, I would still order a fancy cake at AKL again now that they seem to have progressed beyond the supermarket level of cake-making—I guess I just need to be even MORE specific in the future! :rotfl:

The smallest cake you can order is a 1- or 2-tier mini cake. The GF has a standard one (see below) but you'd have to send them ideas or leave it up to the chef at the other places. GF can also do custom mini cakes.

How long until I hear back after my initial email?

I emailed yesterday(8/25) and have not heard back yet. Only one day but its for a cake on the 1st , so 6 days out.

I am just a little concerned because after being told repeatedly that I had to go thru Wilderness lodge by the contemporary number cm's, the cm for WL cake line told me to email the Contemporary cake team because WL team doesn't do custom unless its something like just colors of icing. We're not doing any fondant or anything elaborate, just custom for colors and the style of decorating it.

At what point should I call again?

Chef Brian is off at the beginning of the week-- which is why you haven't received a reply. I think he starts work again on Thursday? Maybe tomorrow. I don't actually remember. Someone else posted it not too long ago so you might want to go back a few pages.

I just called the cake order hot line told them the color and character I wanted and that was it. No messages left, not emails. Cake came out better than I could have ever expected.
