Official Disney Cake Chatter - Part IV! (2012-2016)

Last month I had this cake made for hubby's 40th birthday. I used an off-site bakery - Cha Cha's Delights. I think it came out great, and it tasted REALLY good too! It was red velvet with cream cheese filling and buttercream icing under the fondant. Very good!! The HM logo was an edible image, and the tombstones were made from fondant. We also got some Mickey and Minnie sugar cookies.

Do you have the info the cha cha delights? Did they deliver it to you?

chachasdelights.com. They can deliver but we had a car so I just met them somewhere. The baker/artist actually just works out of her home, I believe. She did a GREAT job and the cake and cookies weren't just great looking - they were DELICIOUS!!

That is very cute! And I bet it cost 1/10 of what Disney charges. Very discouraged lately to read about all the inedible $100 cakes :faint:

Did ChaCha deliver this cake to a Disney resort or restaurant?

we stayed off site this trip. They would deliver (i think it was like an extra $30?) but we just met them to pick it up. It was $90 but worth every penny - not just a great looking cake but yummy too- totally made from scratch and you could definitely taste it!

Hello guys, I want to know if have some place where can I order a costumized cake, that will be 6-inchs.
I want it with molded characters on foundant and a theme I will choose.
Is that possible?
And this need to be delivered at Crystal Palace!

Thank you.

We will be in Disney in October to celebrate my DD's 21st birthday. She has been waiting for years to do this with us- her mom and dad! I think it's really sweet, and very funny, that her boyfriend and best friend both asked if they could come and DD said no, this was just for her and us!

Anyhow… I want to order a birthday cake for DD. We will be staying at the Boardwalk Villas and have no dinner plans for our first night, so I was thinking of having a 6" or 8" cake delivered to our room. However, the next night we are having dinner at Jiko, so I wondered about having the cake there, instead. I am NOT liking the posts about inedible cakes, so here is my question: Who makes better cakes, Boardwalk Bakery or AKL? Which bakery will be more flexible with flavors, options, decorations? Most importantly, which cake will TASTE better? As there are only 3 of us, I'd prefer a 6" cake, not sure about decoration (might just ask about color theming or something) and hopefully have "Happy 21st Birthday Sarah!" written somewhere on the cake or presentation. Thanks for your help!

PS- DD likes the more eclectic movies. Any ideas about what would be available as a tie-in or decoration from Mulan, Hercules, Up, Lion King? WHat would I ask for? I know it's just a 6" cake so might only get colors or something. CAN YOU TELL I DON'T KNOW WHAT I AM DOING? :confused3

To get a better tasting cake I forked out the extra for a fondant cake. They put the buttercream underneath but with the fondant cakes you know they weren't cooked and just sitting for up to days. The 6" we got was from wherever Yachtsman gets their cakes. I can't remember if Yachtsman has their own bakery or if it is just the Boardwalk Bakery.

We got chocolate with chocolate mousse filling. It was delicious. They were able to put a chocolate 2D stand up on the cake (ended up getting one for free!) and flowers (also ended up getting for free) as well as the icing in a choice of colors even though my only request was teal fondant.

Anyone have a pic of the Snow White chocolate figure? Shes my favorite, and I'd love to get one for our trip!

TIA! :)

The pastry team that services Crystal Palace and the other table-service restaurants in the Magic Kingdom (the Contemporary) usually will not customize anything smaller than an 8-inch cake. They also can't mold any Disney characters out of fondant, though they do offer pre-made white chocolate versions of the characters—a list can be found in Post #1 of this thread.

Contact info for ordering a cake at the Magic Kingdom can be found in Post #2. You will have to go back and forth with the Magic Kingdom cake contact a few times before they'll let you put in a request for something other than their standard cakes.

All the Disney bakeries use the same recipes. The only variation in taste would be if you got a stale one, and that usually only happens if you aren't customizing the cake, as wilkeliza said.

BoardWalk Bakery will be more flexible about decorations, though sometimes they can be a bit stingy with flavor options. Animal Kingdom Lodge has a very hit-or-miss reputation on this board when it comes to cakes.

I would do an image search for cakes with the themes you mentioned and then send in a photo or two as inspiration. Disney usually does best when they have very clear guidance as to what you want.

Do Disney let you bring in outside cakes?

Where? For a private event, no. At a restaurant, they usually don't say anything.

Can someone tell me just how big the mini two tier cakes are? Will it safely serve two people? Would two cakes for a family of four be good? We have two birthdays and I am trying to figure out the best option. Also, according to emails back and forth with MK cakes, they only have standard designs and nothing customized past flavored and possible color changes. No theme changes. I was told they could so a Mickey, Minnie princess or flower mini tier cake. Is this really our only options? I was hoping for an Ariel mini two tier and a haunted mansion mini two tier. Nothing extravagant, just hints towards the theme, as I know the cakes are small.

Thanks for any feedback!

Don't take this the wrong way but. This is DISNEY correct. Where are the elaborate cakes? When I think of ordering a cake from Disney I expect grand and really original and I am just not seeing it. SORRY

I got a mini 2 tier haunted mansion cake at BLT in October. It was awesome and delicious.

Yes and yes. People with smaller appetites than mine have reported stretching a mini cake four ways, but then everyone gets only about 1 1/2 bites.

However, the mini cakes can be relatively expensive, depending on the amount of theming, so it might be cheaper to just order one 6-inch cake and then have leftovers.

No. Tell them you want to work with the Contemporary Resort pastry team to customize your cakes. You could also contact the Contemporary directly, but they've been sending people to the MK Cake department if that's where they need the cake delivered. And the MK cake department has been pretty good about sending people back to the Contemporary when they insist on a custom cake.

I know... it's a pretty silly process...

With the exception of Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings, Disney is not in the custom cake business and would much prefer it if those of us who wanted one just accepted the supermarket-style standard cakes they turn out. It is only thanks to a handful of enthusiastic pastry chefs at the various Deluxe resorts that we can get any kind of custom cakes at all.

This thread is relatively new, so we don't have many photos yet; you may wish to peruse past threads (links are in the first post of this thread) which are full of elaborate cakes like these:

OMG that R2D2 cake is amazing! I have looked through old threads and never seen that one. Do you have any details or know where I can find them?!?

I'm starting to plan a cake for September. I'll be looking at an 8" or 10" fondant-covered cake from Boardwalk Bakery. As I consider my options, does anyone here know if they can screen print on fondant? I think I saw a couple of photos of cakes that looked like that, but I'm not sure.

Oh shoot. I guess I shouldn't have reposted that one... We all got excited about it last spring when I shot it at Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings' Bridal Showcase. But when several of us tried to get one, we were told that Disney can't actually make them for guests because of the copyright (my theory is they are too difficult to make "on model"). I guess one of the chefs at the showcase just went rogue for the day! :teeth:

Yes. Well, GF and Contemporary do it. I haven't seen one from BoardWalk Bakery, but I don't see why they couldn't. :thumbsup2

Oh that's ok about the R2D2 cake! I've heard they are now offering some type of Star Wars cakes, at least at CR, so regardless any cake with that theme will make my son happy:) That cake was amazing though!
