Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

Hi all,
I'm new to this thread--I'm going to be on the Disney Fantasy in April. Very interested in running the Castaway Cay 5k. Wondering if anyone has run it from the Fantasy that can give me info about how to sign up/time it is held/anything else I might need to know. Thanks in advance!!

You can sign up at the Guest Services desk, which is located off the Atruim in Deck 3. You are given tickets (like port adventure tickets) when you sign up.

We met at The Tube, one of the bars in the Deck 4 Aft nightclub area at 9 am on the morning of our Castaway Cay day. When you get there, you present your tickets, Key to the World card, photo ID, and you are given a bib number. They go over the 5K course on a map.

When the ship is cleared, cast members will take the entire Castaway Cay 5K runners as a group off the ship. We are taken off before any other passengers are let off the ship.

We walk as a group to the Bike Rental area, stopping at Skuttle's Cove to drop off any kids. At the Bike Rental, we line up, review the course, put away any back packs/beach bags in a chest, and soon, you are off!

Thank you so much for the info Deb! Was there a cost to running the 5k? Did they give you a medal? Thanks again!

What time is the 5K?

I ran it a few years ago and we did not get off the boat until about 9:30. People had been getting off for at least 45 min to an hour before we began the run. It made for an intense run as the sun was up and the heat was coming in full force in the low 90's. A week of eating like a king and then that, made for a slow and difficult run. My dh ran it a few years before me but was the first ones off the ship, way before others disembarked. So I was wondering what they were doing lately regarding starting time. Also any reports on the medal? Am I understanding correctly that they are transitioning to the new ones or is that temporary?

My only ID that I will be carrying will be my passport which I am not keen on taking off the ship to run with. Is there are opportunity to take it back to my room after I get my bib?

1 week ago on the Magic, we met at 8:15, and we started running just before 9:00. It was actually cool-ish. I think it depends on when you are docking at CC, though. We were not the first ones off the ship, but near the beginning, anyway.

We also got the new medals.

We had to show photo ID at the check in in the lounge, but I think you could get someone to take the ID back to your room - or if you check in early, you could do it.

That's fine, I am somebody who likes to be early to things so long as I can show it to get my bib & take it back to the room I would be fine. I don't like the idea of leaving it with anybody or having it in my pocket.

You have take photo ID off the ship at CC along with your key card. If the passport is the only photo ID you'll have with you, you need take it off the ship for when you get back onboard.

Do you have to show ID when you get back onto the boat at all times? I read they suggested you have a photocopy of your passport to take ashore & to leave your original in the safe on the ship. I've never cruised before so it's all new ground to me.

DH and I are planning our first 5k to be the Castaway Cay 5K! so excited! Question, I know that we can drop off our younger kids at scuttles cove but what does our 12 year old do? He doesn't wanna run and we do do feel comfortable letting him walk it alone. Any ideas?
Bump?

Scuttles cove, like the I lab and club, go through 12 so the 12 year old can be there. There is also an area for Edge (that's the preteen club right) from what I've read.

You still have to have photo ID. I've never had mine checked. But the reality is that you are on a bahamas island (merely leased by disney) and you need to follow their rules. On the cc day navigator you will see that you need your keycard and photo id.

When I leave the ship (other that on the cay when I bring my drivers license) I bring my passport. (Some do that and some don't) If I were bringing a photocopy of my passport I would still bring my license.

Thank you for hhis information! Where do you leave the key card and license? I guess I will need to run with it. Im hoping to get a cabana and will most likely meet my mom at the cabana.

I didnt do the 5K on New Years Day since I was with my family, my mom, and my susters family and we were a group of ten and would have been too crazy for all of us to meet so this time since just my momand me, I am going to do it.

Thanks

I have a waterproof lanyard case (Witz brand called a "see it safe") that I keep things in on the island. That clunks around during the run and bugs me. Last time I wore shorts with a pocket in them that fit the cards. Alas that cut my very upper thigh so try it out first.

Even if I just carried them in my hand it would be fine for the 5k. I don't want to cut my leg again lol.

I think I'm going to invest in a running belt for this reason. I usually run with my phone in an arm case at home with my car key tucked inside. But it's annoying as heck.

Do you know if there's a place at the storage box to attach and lock a KYSS bag? I can have my dad come to check in and take our stuff from us too I guess.

Another beginner question. We are not runners but am wanting to try a 5k. We thought the CC 5k might be a good first one because it isn't a big official 5k like during the run Disney events in the parks. Do you think this one is a good one to try for our first one? Can you walk it if you can't run? Then if my DS (15) doesn't want to do it with us will I have to leave him on the ship and then go meet with him to bring him off the ship when we are done? Or can he get off with us and then just find a good place on the beach to chill out till we are done?

At Castaway Cay, yes, you do.

We found this out last month.

After the 5K, DD wanted to go back to the ship to change clothes, while I stayed and staked out some beach chairs and loungers. We had thrown all our lanyards in my bag, and DD accidentally pulled out mine, instead of hers.
When she got to the ship, the CM would not let her on, and they made her come back and get her own Key to the World and driver's license.

Excellent, thank you. As a first time cruiser I just assumed your KTTW world would get you on & off the ship. I had never thought about the need to carry my passport, I am now looking into a waterproof wallet I can strap to me with it in to keep it safe. I'm glad I asked!

You can sign up at guest services or the excursion decks. They have even taken people the morning of. We had a 9am meeting in the Tube where you got your bib. You must have photo ID if an adult and your room card. It wasn't until about 930 that they actually decided to talk about the course etc. So show up no more than 10 minutes after the 'meeting time'. You are generally the first group off the ship and you walk to the starting line (2nd tram stop). There is a large communal foot locker to stash bags and stuff. Also, grab a throwaway cup before the race starts, this allows you to fill up at any of the island waterjugs (which do not have cups provided). I waited I think 5 minutes after the 'official start' before I went and then subtracted the 5mins off my finish time. This way the horde of people have thinned out. If you have kids they can come with you and you are able to check them into scuttles cove along the way to the start line. At the end of the race you get your medal and that's it. You can find my report [here]

Nope. Just the box.

Ran it about a week ago. The course is nice and flat so it'd be a good first 5K. There are people who walk the entire 5K and those who walk/run. It's all good!
