Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

Ran it about a week ago. The course is nice and flat so it'd be a good first 5K. There are people who walk the entire 5K and those who walk/run. It's all good!

Well...it's not climbing a mountain, but the bike loop does have an incline to it. The runway is flat, but the entire course is not flat the whole way. Unless they removed the bike loop I guess...

Just curious when a lot of the 5k stuff changed. I've run it twice (Sep 2012 and Sep 2013) and they never had a pre-registration. It was simply show up at the meeting place in the AM and go. Also I don't remember needing a photo ID but i did need my KTTW. I did see not long ago they were talking about making it a more official race. Can anyone confirm that?

The bike loop is still part of the course. I didn't notice much of an incline. Suffice to say, it's an easy 5K.

No surprise that I agree with you, Dug.

I sometimes wonder if that's why so many people do the loop clockwise, instead of counter/anti-clockwise as we are supposed to do it. Because I do feel a slight raise (since I generally run it in my minimal shoes I'm VERY sensitive to ups and downs of the road) running it the correct way, but then I never feel a matching decline, so I wonder if you just feel a decline running it the wrong direction.

It's more official. You sign up for it ahead of time. CC is the Bahamas, and you need to have photo ID and your KTTW card. They state it on the Navigators, they state it at the signup, they tell you again when you get to the meetup spot.

Excellent, thank you. As a first time cruiser I just assumed your KTTW world would get you on & off the ship. I had never thought about the need to carry my passport, I am now looking into a waterproof wallet I can strap to me with it in to keep it safe. I'm glad I asked!

FYI - you can go with just a driver's license. You don't have to have your passport.

I don't drive that's my issue, it's passport or nothing. In previous years I used my learners license but it expired a few years back & had to be returned.

Oh, got ya.
Can you get an ID card from the DMV?

I'm British so I am not sure they do what you are referring to here. I could get attain a provisional license again but I am not sure if there is a cost involved (which would be a waste as I don't drive) & I am sure it wouldn't get back to me before I left.

Oh, sorry again! I did not realize you are from the UK.

Here in the US, the driver's license department is called the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), and they have been providing ID cards for people who need identification but don't qualify or want a driver's license.
Anyway, sorry for my comfusion, and enjoy the 5K!

You might consider something like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Clear-Water-Resistant-Passport-Divers/dp/B005H4SWIQ

That's a bigger version of what I once carried during the 5K and the noise of the KTTW and license clunking around in it made me crazy, BUT it would be a way to keep your passport on you, dry, and safe for the day.

No problem, you were only being helpful. There's no way you could have known I was British. In actual fact you planted the idea & I can get a CitizenCard which is official ID that I can get within a month & will prevent all these problems. So thank you.

Thanks, I can see how that would drive you crazy when running. I have an old armband that I used to keep my phone in when running (before I got a GPS watch) that I am hoping would be large enough in a push but if not I was going to get a waterproof bumbag thing.

Another beginner question. We are not runners but am wanting to try a 5k. We thought the CC 5k might be a good first one because it isn't a big official 5k like during the run Disney events in the parks. Do you think this one is a good one to try for our first one? Can you walk it if you can't run? Then if my DS (15) doesn't want to do it with us will I have to leave him on the ship and then go meet with him to bring him off the ship when we are done? Or can he get off with us and then just find a good place on the beach to chill out till we are done?

I wouldn't be overly concerned about doing one of the runDisney 5K races they have in the parks. I know officially there is a 16 minute/mile pace you are supposed to meet, but I haven't seen them enforcing it like they do for the longer races. There aren't public roads that they need to worry about re-opening for traffic. My wife has done several of the runDisney 5K and walks them at a slower pace than that. She figures that if she just keeps walking, and other people are stopping to get pictures done with characters, then she won't be the last one to cross the finish line. She is closer to a 20 minute/mile pace.

Is there a 5K every time the boat docks at Castaway Cay or is it a yearly event like the WDW Marathon?

There is a 5K every time the boat docks.

The Castaway Cay Challenge has been held exactly twice. Once for the Marathon weekend and once for Princess, both this year. (I haven't heard anyone talk about the post-Princess Challenge) Only rundisney knows if they'll have more of them. And for the Marathon weekend Challenge, they ran it VERY early in the morning, and still had the free run later. (I assume it was the same for Princess but I haven't read any reports on it, nor did I do it like the Marathon weekend one, so I can't state it for sure)

Yes, for the Marathon weekend Challenge, it was interesting getting off the boat at Castaway Cay in the dark. Not sure if they will do it again next Marathon weekend (or for any of the other runDisney races) but my wife had me book B2B cruise for 2016, since she was unable to take time off this year, but want me to do this again next year when she should be able to go as well.

That weekend I talked to several people that ran both the special Challenge 5K, as well as the free 5k later that morning. I don't know if the 5K course for the free run is the same as the Challenge, or if they went back to doing the twice around the loop version.

For marathon weekend the free 5Kers got to use the same course, if memory serves. Could be wrong though. :)

You think they'll do it again? I thought it was a HUGE pain for all the workers on the ship, even the captain, because he had to get us there so early in the morning, and everyone had to get up extra early, etc. And if there had been weather bad enough to not dock or to cancel, it would have been SO bad. I felt it was poorly-enough run that I actually HOPE it's not done again. The course was fun, but since it goes along the cabanas on SB it's not a viable course change forever. And maybe they can learn from things...like YES they needed to bring the backdrop back onto the ship so people could take pictures of it with ALL their medals (as they told us not to bring all our medals off the ship LOL). Thank goodness for Christiaan at that moment, who made the determination that they would bring it onboard. (and then they got rid of it before disembarkation, which was a bummer because that was the only moment I would have had a take a picture, because that last night I did NOT feel well)

I don't know if they will do it again. My wife doesn't care about the race itself. She knows that I like doing the runDisney events and I plan on doing the Dopey again for the third year. She sees it as an excuse to do a couple of cruises pirate: that will end up getting me to Platinum status
