Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

An utter nightmare for them. $70 to run on the deck. Horrid.

Awful for me too. But from their point of view, so much worse.

I wasn't saying it was ideal. But if the ship was somehow unable to dock at CC...

The WDW Marathon weekend and the Princess weekend in 2015 also have the Castaway Cay Challenge.

You have to sign up for at least one of the events of the weekend, then you have to sign up for the Cay 5K challenge as well, and, of course, book that cruise. (and make sure that the cruise booking uses the right code to mark you as being part of the Challenge)

It's not cheap, that's for sure!

Looks like registration for the upcoming WDW Marathon weekend was in April of this year, so I would expect about the same for 2016's weekend. They announced the challenge after signups for it (but before registration for Princess, I believe). I assume that if this year's challenges go well* they'll continue it.

*I'm tormenting myself thinking "what if I've paid all this money for the challenge and we cannot dock at Castaway? what will THEY do? eep!".....

RunDisney/DCL did not announce the challenges until well after the WDW & Princess weekends were sold out, so if you have any thought you might want to do a potential challenge, register for the on-site races when registration opens (they will sell out w/in 24-48 hours, esp. Princess), then wait and see if they tag on a challenge on the Monday sail date. You can go to rundisney.com and see the registration dates for each race in the RunDisney family.

Didn't realize it was post-princess registration as well! And yes it was all sold out, wasn't it? Crazy.

Can anyone suggest a good app to keep track of time and distance. I'm new to running and want to take on the 5k, but I have to admit other than getting on my feet and moving, I don't really know what I'm doing. :confused3

I used Couch to 5k and liked it. When I started I didn't think I could run a mile without stopping, but recently completed my first 5k and ran the entire time. I like Runkeeper better for tracking time and distance and they also have various training plans, but most seem to require a paid subscription to follow the plan in their app.

I'll second staceymay00's recommendation of the Couch to 5K app. I've used it in the past and am currently using it to gear up for my first CC5K. However, the GPS on the app seems less than reliable, so I typically pair it with the Map My Run app. I get much more accurate distance readings with Map My Run. I'm eager to add Castaway Cay to my MMR history!

I would like to run this with my son, but he is only 9. Does anyone know how stringent Disney is about the age? Can he just show up and run with me without a bib?
TIA

You have to ask onboard, when you register. Sometimes the answer is yes, sometimes the answer is no.

So they are calling the 5K the "Island run" or "Island 5K" to differentiate it from the Challenge type run they just had and will have in Feb. (and who knows if they will have more)

So I'll use that same phrase.

As of the 14th, the Island run has new medals. They are rubber, not plastic, and they are VERY cute. I'll take a picture and post it ASAP.

The first people who got it were Challenge participants, along with the metal Challenge medal.

The second group of people who got it were the Island 5K participants an hour or so after the Challenge 5K. (those people got to run the Challenge course, which was different than normal)

The shipboard people were very clear that this is the medal that will be used for the Island 5k going forward.

10 is the age minimum. Still not sure why, but that seems to be getting more solid.

Once the rundisney people announced the new medal (during the meeting for the Challenge participants on the 13th) people RAN to sign up. So there were many people doing two 5ks back to back, to get two Island medals. We asked later (not for me, as I feel that one 5k in the Bahamas is enough for a day) and they said that it normally fills at 200, but they had added something like 60 to account for all the people who wanted to run it. They had capped it at something like 260. DH and DS could not participate. Tried to sign up too late. Oh well.

(there were over 800 signed up for the Challenge, run, by the way. 3 corrals. That's a lot of people! We also got to meet by 5:45 to be taken off the ship in waves, and that race start was at 7pm. The thing many of us learned that morning was that one of the Disney Dream signs on the side of the ship is actually lighted. Looked VERY cool before sunrise.)

The lighting is weird in my living room and I'm really jetlagged, so forgive the quality of those pictures.

I hope they keep giving those out - they look great! I'm starting the C25K program this week so I'm hopefully ready for the run on our April cruise. I'd love to have a cool medal to commemorate my efforts because I have a feeling it is going to be HARD!!

My husband and I would love to participate in the run but we have a four year old. From what I've read it appears we would need to be off the ship before the kids club opens. Would we be able to run with him in one of the jogging strollers available on Castaway Cay? Are they actual jogging strollers? Thanks!

They open the kids club on the island early to take kids for parents who are running

Yep, I really hope the rundisney people knew what they were talking about. :)

I can't wait for the people who were on Castaway after the 14th come back and tell us! All I know is what the rundisney people said onboard and that the normal island run people got them that same day. But those people got the different course and seemed to get leftover rundisney food, son it was all different that day!

Silly sort of confirmation...I participated in one of the pub quiz events on the 15th, and the winners of the Movie Quotes trivia got the hard plastic mickey ears medals. The guy running the quiz indicated that now this is the only way to get those, that not even the runners got them anymore, or something like that.

Ok. It's been several days since new CC5k challenge ended. Where are these ppl ?? Lol. I'm dying for a first hand review of the new course and all other details! Lol. ;-)
Sure hope they add more races to the challenge series line up! I missed out this time. ;-(

I'd like to know too! I have a whole story about wanting to do the 5k in my PTR :scared:
