Official Castaway Cay 5K Thread

I've also read that it is shorter than a true 5K. I think I also read that is one of the reasons RunDisney had a different course for the CC Challenge.

I am still flip flopping if I'm going to run it in November. The medal is cute and I'd like to have it, but I also don't know if I want to waste my precious island time doing it, but at that point I'll be doing the training schedule for the glass slipper challenge......hmmmmmmm......

You're right, the free one isn't fully 5K. And it's likely that that is one reason why they have a different course for the two paid ones they have had. (but to use that course you have to be off the island before others are, because you would directly impact the SB cabana guests)

You're there, why not do it? Makes you feel great for the rest of the day. If you have family who can take your bags off for you just meet them at the end. Though I actually have enjoyed going back to the ship, showering there and changing into bathing suit once dry (rather than doing the running clothes to swimsuit exchange in a small dark bathroom stall while sweaty) and sunscreening back up, then leaving the ship with the family (who is happier because they got to sleep a bit longer).

Boo! I was so proud of myself for doing it in 28 minutes in the heat and sun... now I know why I had a good time (by my standards)

Yoga on the beach (even if my own because the scheduled one got cancelled because of the winds and the later docking - at least I never saw anyone from the spa wander down the beach, so I assume it was cancelled...or just changed to stretching) made me feel good the rest of the day too. :)

Still took me nearly 40 minutes, so you can still feel good about yourself. :)

I got 3.01 for one of the 5Ks I did there when using my Garmin. So it's not THAT far off.

Yay for yoga! I managed to find the Serenity Beach (Bay?) yoga after the Challenge. Took me 1000 years to walk allllll the way to the end of the beach there to join in, and I was about 10 minutes late, and it was weird because the beach is tiled (downward facing dog when your arms are a foot below your feet is weird, and chaturanga is even weirder), but it was nice to have done it, even if it wasn't nice to be doing it. Make sense?

Good for you for doing it on your own! I wouldn't have been so strong. (and I can't really remember the order)

I just did my Modo sequence (the studio I go to) of stuff - but given I'm used to practicing in a room that's 95-100 degrees, I was practically cold, so I didn't last long. Haha. It was nice to be able to feel comfortable doing more than stretching or floor sequences though - it was just rocky enough on the boat that even the scheduled yoga became sunrise stretch.

I suppose it is easier to remember if there's a sequence! DH loves hot yoga and can remember his moves, too. My teacher switches it all up every week, and I just go along with her. I really should try to remember it, though.

I'm going with my MIL who will be turning 77yo in December and my two kids (12 & 10 at time of sailing). She has never cruised before and I'm a bit nervous leaving her on her own with the kids. She got lost for two hours last month trying to go from my house to the grocery store that was less than a mile away. All she had to do was take a right out of my subdivision and the store was 3/4 of a mile on the left. She never got to the store and ended up two towns north of where I live!

Just wanted to say that I finished day TWO of training ^_^
I started day one 2 weeks ago but got too busy. Started again this past Tuesday and just got back from campus gym tonight :)

I'm super excited :yay:
This is more than I've done in my life (on purpose) and I'm doing it!!
Last time I did a training it was for Princess 10k in 2014, but training got stopped only a few days in cause I had emergency surgery that prevented running.

I'm just gushing about how proud of myself I am :o

Does anyone else get a little woozy after getting off the treadmill? Happens to me, but I'm not sure if it's a motion thing or cause I haven't really exercised much in my life :tilt:

Glad to hear it's not just me getting dizzy when getting off the treadmill!
I've never run in an organized run in my life, but hope to do this. Been dieting & going to the gym for a month. Lost 25 pounds, but still need to lose more. My goal was 30 by cruise time. I have 16 days left.
Today was the 1st time I timed myself 3 miles on the treadmill, went in 30:35. Feel I should be below 29 by the time the cruise comes around. Don't have any idea how running on a treadmill will compute to running on CC in 90 degree heat.

Oh, you get a bit dizzy too? Well, good to know my head isn't going to explode or anything lol
Congratulations! That must feel wonderful :)
Hrm, is 30 a good/average time? I just started training so I can't do timing yet lol

Yeah! I think about that too, I'm scared about the heat on CC. When is your cruise?

I leave the 29th of this month. Don't think my time is too good, but it's not like I hope to do great. Since I've never run before, I know nothing about times, just want to do it to say that I did it. Who knows, I might get inspired to try a couple more 5Ks at home.
Guessing a good time is around 20 minutes.

RunDisney has only held two Castaway Cay challenges - January 2015 after the WDW Marathon weekend and February 2015 after the Princess 1/2 Marathon weekend. You had to run one of those races and register/pay for the CC challenge plus the cruise. No word if they are going to host events like those in the future.

I talked to the people at the runDisney booth and the expo for Rock N Roll DC half marathon today. They still don't know if the Challenge will be offered next year but did say that when registration for Disney's marathon weekend opens (April 28) they will have announced whether it will be an option or not.

Well that makes sense!

If you want to run AND want everyone to be safe.... Maybe just see if MIL can watch over the kids while they get ready while you go off and run? Then you go back to the ship and get ready, then you disembark together? Although it does put you a bit behind where you in your excitement want to be, at least everyone should be ready and they should be in the same county. :)

Your story about MIL....I gave directions to another mom once, so she could drop her kid at my condo. This women grew up in this town. I gave the address. I said "go all the way down X street toward the port until you literally cannot go anymore because Y road intersects it. The building you would run into if you kept on driving is my building. Park and call me. She could not find me. She went down X street until Y, saw that she couldn't keep going on X, turned, and kept looking for where she could keep going down X. She called me, panicking, and I kept saying "where are you? park somewhere." And she kept on driving. "I'm at this, I'm at that, where ARE you?" as I'm firmly telling her to stop driving. Mystifying isn't it?

Woo! Are you following a plan? I highly recommend following a plan. I did a "couch to 5K" from coolrunning.com.

Woozy...might be a motion thing. Might not. HYDRATE. FUEL. Do NOT increase your distance/time by more than 10% on any day unless your plan that you're following tells you to, and only once you feel ready. Don't over-caffeinate, either. I combined underhydration, underfueling, overcaffeination, and "oh I feel great I'll keep going!", made it all the way home, only to faint in the shower. I hit the back of my head *on the faucet* and could quite literally have killed myself. Got lucky. Refused to be taken to the hospital (DH and I have talked since...the one with the head injury doesn't get to make those decisions going forward) and dealt with a nasty nasty concussion for MONTHS afterward. Don't do that. Take care of yourself.

Yes, I am following the exact plan ^_^ Did you move on to 5k to 10k? I want to do that for the Disney Paris running event (next year). It would be wonderful if I could do a half marathon (no way will be ready for a full marathon by then).

Oh wow, I'm so glad you're okay .. that's scary :(
I bring a waterbottle with me and sip it occasionally :) Don't drink coffee really and food is just fine. On top of everything ... I live on a medical campus (husband is in premed) lol so if all else fails, I got lots of doctors/almost doctors around :)

I appreciate your wisdom and caring, I truly do :flower3:

Last night my wife and I were discussing changing our cruise reservation that I had booked assuming that the challenge would be held again in 2016. Since we hadn't heard anything about it yet, I figured it wasn't going to happen next year. Today I look at http://www.rundisney.com/disneyworld-marathon/ and see that it is happening.

Looked at the rundisney site today and the Official Castaway Cay 5k is now included for 2016 marathon weekend. Cruise details are on the site.
Edit: sorry should have read the whole thread before replying. I see you already knew that :)

We are leaving for our 2nd DC in a few weeks and didn't do the 5K at CC before but hoping to so. See that you preferred going back to the ship to shower which I am considering but wondering a few things that I haven't been able to find the answers to. Are there lockers on CC anywhere that we could put some things if we wanted to and do you know if the kids clubs on the ship or CC are open to drop off the kids before the race? It's just us and the kids this trip and my husband and I were both hoping to do the 5K. Thanks for any info!

There are no locking lockers on CC. You can put things in an unlocked box at the start/finish of the course; CMs are standing there.

Kid's club on the island is open and they walk by it. Get the kids up and ready, drop them at Scuttle's on the long walk to the start.

Do not forget everyone's KTTWs and photo IDs for the adults. And sunscreen. :)
