I am celebrating my birthday at WDW and would love to have a cake, however, DH won't think of ordering one and will have a fit if I order one and spend a lot of money. Who has better cakes, Grand Floridian Cafe or Kona? What would I spend if I ordered just a small cake (?6 or 8") with frosting or ganache and no decorations except maybe some flowers? Or, what could I get for around $30? Also, do the bakeries do marble cakes on all the cakes or just certain ones? Thanks.

As for the pricing. Pat at the GF Bakery charged my CC $95 for a basic cake that didn't look anything like I'd ordered. It was marble 8" and had one flower on it (it was half collapsed by the time it got to us. It also included a slimy chocolate slipper and 3 dipped strawberries.

I don't think it matters what you order, she tends to make what she wants.

So sorry that happend to you! I agree that was NOT the cake you ordered, I completely understand your disappointment.

FYI I think the gold embossed castle on the side of the cake is the conceptual rendering of Sleeping Beauty Castle in Disneyland, I think I remember seeing it in One Man's Dream, or maybe on a piece of furniture at the DL Hotel.

Hi Guys

Just came back today from our trip, we got a cake at 1900 Park Fare on the 18th. I asked for a pirate and princess theme at the cake was for my son and daughter....the cake was fab, we were all so pleased, we didn't want to cut it. Other guests were also commenting on how lovely it was.

I will post photos later

Here are thr photos of our cake

I spoke to the chef at AKL about a week and a half ago. He said he would email me some designs. Anyone know how long that should take? Cake is for 10/22.

Anyone ever get a cake from AKL? Care to share your experience?

Thanks

I ordered a small cake ($25.00) for my daughter's birthday. It was a white cake with white frosting and white frosting roses, very pretty and tasted great. I had taken a small glass slipper that I bought at the party store and when we arrived for dinner I gave it to the hostess in a zip lock bag, and when they brought the cake out it was on top perfectly. There were six of us and we ate the cake the next day for breakfast since we had way too many desserts to chose from at Boma. I know you are probably wanting a more elaborate design but for us this cake was perfect.

I just wanted to share how wonderful Pat at the GF is! The other day when I talked to her I was a bit worried about the cake as our conversation was so short and she said how usually all cake have edible images (not our favorite). I think she was just extremely busy and I was extremely sick (bronchitis, ick). Today however, we had the most wonderful, long, personable conversation. She thinks we'll be very happy with our HM cake and I do too. I can see what you all are talking about when you share your love for this lady. I can't wait to see the cake and share it with you all. Thanks DIS friends for all your help!:grouphug:

Pat doesn't make the cakes, she just takes the orders. The cakes are made by the bakery staff, NOT chefs, by any stretch of the imagination either.
The cakes are made and then frozen solid. They are then cut and filled and crumb coated and put in the cooler. The following day they are either decorated with buttercream or fondant depending on the order. Cakes are usually completed 1-3 days in advance.

Did you still pay for the cake?? I can't believe the manager was aware that you were disappointed with the cake and it was not what your order, but you still had to pay for the cake!

It is completely unacceptable for these cakes to come out less than fresh and not tasting absolutely 100% amazing!! Personal preferreances of fondant vs ganach or mousse filling vs buttercream filling aside, your cake should be fresh and moist! dry and cracked fondant or condensation ruining the decoration on your cake is simply not acceptable!! If Disney can not offer the level of service and detail to these cakes as is necissary, than they need to stop offering them/accepting orders! There is no way i would pay $100 for a cake that tasted like cardboard!

and the elaborate decorating is no excuse for the cake to be stale or frozen! The flowers are made ahead of time, not the cake. You don't need to have the cake sitting next to you for 2 days while you make flowers, castles, dinosaurs, or haunted mansion show pieces! Decorations first, THEN you make the cake!

I hope you have responded to the cake hotline, as well as the oerson you were emailing with at the CR to express your displeasure at the cake. Judging by the past cakes we have seen, the CR CAN make beautiful cakes. Someone seriously mixed up your order and you need to be compensated for it! If you did pay for the cake, you need your money refunded!

The sugar flowers are ordered and come in from China. They are not made at the GF.

A poster on the cake thread photo gallery (which has been closed?!?) had pictures of a great mini-wedding cake made at the Boardwalk Bakery. ("Oh Mom", if you are reading this, maybe you can help me out.) It looks like exactly the right size and price for my DD when we celebrate her 4th birthday in June. We will be dining at 1900 Park Fare. Can they do the same thing there or can I have it sent from the Boardwalk Bakery? Also, am I better off calling the hotline if I want something specific, or the actual restaurant? And lastly, if I bring my own topper will they just set it on there free of charge? Thanks.

Just wanted to double check - can we have cakes delivered at the end of breakfast?

Also, we've got breakfast adr's for GF - Poly - CR, which one do you think is best to order a cake at??

This is the cake I got for my daughters 16th Birthday Party @ 1900 Park Fare on Wednesday. It was vanilla with buttercream icing and fondant. The inside had custard and no strawberries. I ordered strawberries, but it was good anyway. She loved it, so I was happy.

I'm glad your daughter loved her cake! Can I ask how it tasted?

Also, I have to say that I've noticed more and more people making comments about how they ordered one thing, but got another, but that "it was okay". I'm really surprised at how accepting everyone is being of these expensive cakes not being made as ordered!

Of course, our cake was pretty but terrible tasting, so maybe I'm just being more sensitive to it now.

The cake was actually really good. It had a very good flavor and the custard was very tasty as well. We were a party of eight and everyone thought it was very good. My niece got married back in May and commented how much better this cake was than her wedding cake and her wedding cake was very very expensive from a caterer in Knoxville, TN. The cakes are very expensive at Disney; however, the look on your child's face when the server brings it out is priceless.

We will be at WDW next week and I want to purchase a Mickey Head cake.
We will celebrate an anniversary and a birthday.
Can I purchase a cake at Main Street Bakery and/or
Boardwalk Bakery.
Is there one size and how many would it serve ?
Does anyone know the price ?
I have seen it on the Boards and I think it would be great !
Thanks.

They keep that thread closed, but copy pictures from this thread to that one for quicker reference.

In my opinion you can have cake FOR breakfast. :) You can have a cake for any meal at the restaurants that offer it.
