I think the PP meant the 8 inch cake you order at the podium. The generic sara Lee cakes. They are cute but are not custom.

You can order an 8 inch custom cake and have it made however you and your budget want. :rotfl2:

Most people refer to the 8 inch cakes as the podium sara lee cakes. :hippie:

I don't need a bunch of decorations or anything, the only thing I want special is the be able to pick the flavors (icing, cake, & fillings) I want. Should I order from the YC bakery and have it delivered at our dinner since so far they seem to be the only one that can get anything right...or I could order from the Boardwalk for pick-up after our meal?

Whatever way works best for you:goodvibes

See the more I read the more I am so confused!! When I called to order the cake she said NOTHING about it being a frozen sara lee cake. I was under the impression that even though it was a 8 inch it was still going to be fresh and decorated to my liking. It was none of those things. It looks like the icing for his name was put right on there. All I know is that I will never order a cake again. I've seen all these beautiful cakes on this site and the process was horrible. No wonder the lady seemed okay with me changing from the 10 inch to the 8 inch, she didnt have to do anything.:sad2:
Its a shame that it was made this hard. Its Disney, the cakes should be magical too. Hopefully they can get a website with pictures and prices and detail description of the cakes and all the bakers can get on 1 page.

Well the chef just called me and said Pat was not in due to a family emergency. She talked to me about the cake ~ we swapped ideas and she is going to call me back tomorrow with a price.

The cake will be in the shape of the mad hatter cake EXCEPT it will be black and red. She said they have a white chocolate skull and mentioned a few other cool things... I am guessing about $120 for it as the mad hatter cakes run about $120-$130 or so. I am sure they can make a smaller cheaper version but I wanted something extra special for our first night and my son's special birthday dinner:goodvibes
She does understand that he is 12 and would rather "cool" pirate style rather than kiddie style ~ lots of death and destruction ..skulls and cross bones ...blacks and reds :lmao: Not the princess cakes you normally see unless one of them is hanging from the gallows :rotfl:

I will make sure to post pics of it when we go =)

Sounds great! I don't know what the mad hatter cake is. :confused3 Have a link??
:)

I agree it is totally confusing! i have had a few cakes ordered on previous trips and none of them what i asked for :lmao:

This time I did get a hold of the pastry chef at the GF (not just Pat) The pastry chef called me herself and we talked about the cake I want made :goodvibes

You need to realize that the specialty cakes are way more expensive than the sara lee cakes. As most guest are happy with the mickey generic cakes ~ sometimes the cake people don't offer or explain the differences. The cake hotline ~ from what I understand are basic *quick decorating simple cakes* with names added. I could be wrong but this is the impression I was given.

When I called the cake hotline I was sent directly to the GF private dining...they were ready to take my cake order UNTIL I explained I did NOT want the generic mickey cake, that I wanted a fondant custom made cake. Then and only then was I directed to Pat, who takes the special cake orders now for the GF.

I still HAVE NO IDEA how the cake will turn out this trip but from what the pastry chef and Pat has spoken of ~ its going to be a great birthday cake for my son!
I can't wait:love:

Nope, I sure don't
I have seen it on the old cake thread and I saw it in person last summer when the people next to us ordered it at 1900 park fare. Its a beautiful cake! Its kind of topsy turvy and shaped like the Mad Hatters hat :lmao:

Oh okay. :thumbsup2

I'm thinking of just doing the Mickey head cake for $48. :goodvibes I always spend a lot of money on their birthday cakes at home from our favorite bakery so since I'm spending the $$$ on Disney I'll go with the $48 cake! :rotfl: And DD can have the glass slipper. I don't want two cakes for just the 4 of us. :scared1:

Thats a great plan! Many places offer chocolate pluto dog bones for the little boys. I haven't done the dog bones but I did do a glass slipper for DD once. She loved it!

Are there details anywhere about the Mickey Head Cake? I have seen pictures, but none showing the inside. How big is it? About the same as the 10"?

So I guess things have changed then :confused3 I thought the 6" cakes were the ones you get not customized when you order at the podium

I think the generic "premade" cakes are 6" to. The 8" should be freshly made. They just don't usually offer as many customizing options on those.

I agree they need the cake info on the website & should allow the guests to choose between customizing options.

Hi everyone,

I need to call and order a cake but I don't know exactly what I want!! Maybe someone here will have a good idea? :goodvibes:

The cake will be a surprise for my family and delivered to our room at the Yacht Club. I have 3 boys, ages 10, 8 and 3. We will be there celebrating 1 year since we met/adopted the youngest from China.

I know I want the 10". I would prefer fondant. Other than that, I don't have a clue??? :confused3:

What would be a good "theme"? Mickey? A castle? Help!

Should it say anything? I couldn't think of any good wording.

If it weren't a surprise I could ask my husband to help me. I can't do this alone! :rotfl2:

Whatever I end up with, I promise to take pictures and post!

Those are all great questions; I'm in the same boat - DS's 21st bday and my mind's a blank as to how to decorate it.

I have another question - what does fondant taste like - do you eat it - or is it more of a canvas for the amazing decorations- and should you peel it away and eat the icing below??? Probably a dumb question but .........

Congrats!!! Both my niece and nephew are adopted! One from Mexico and the other from Guatamala

I think your boys' might be too young to understand the sentimentality of a sweet cake. What are some of their fav disney characters? I would go with their favorite characters! It would be a bigger hit with boys:lmao:
I would call the YC private dining number and get a hold of the pastry chef or the person who takes the orders on custom specialty cakes. Maybe you can brain storm with them over the phone?

The fondant, you peel off. You can eat it, but it doesn't taste very good. Its more of a decoration than anything else.

I googled adoption fondant cakes to get some ideas ~

The only one I found that was kind of cute was a little boy sleeping on top of a chinese food take out box with a fortune cookie :goodvibes

There was another one with a drawing of a little girl holding 2 flags...
but nothing particular to adoption anniverseries

I did find this cake .. and I cracked up laughing!!! This seriously hit my funny bone

Does anyone know if AKL makes specialty cakes? If they do, do they make the miniature wedding cakes? I'm having a hard time getting them to answer anything.

I called the cake hotline and went through the steps to get to AKL. I asked about a customized cake to be delivered to our room and they said they just deal with the restaurants. I had to talk to a specific chef. She gave me the number. When I called, it was the number to DHS cakes hotline. The woman said I have the wrong number but she tried to get a chef for me. He wasn't answering his phone so she emailed him or her my name and number. She did say that they would only deliver to the podium of the restaurants at AKL and they are not in charge of getting it to my room. Why can't AKL make it and then deliver to my room? I'm confused.

Hey everyone!

First off, I didn't even know that this cake stuff existed! So...:banana::banana::banana:

Second, DW, DS, DMIL, DFIL will be down in September for two celebrations; DW's 26th bday and the inlaws 15th anniversary. I definitely want to do a cake for DW. We haven't nailed down our itinerary yet (no flaming please ;)) but I'm thinking we'll probably be eating at Ohana for her birthday. She absolutely loves the Polynesian resort; do you think they could come up with some sort of Polynesian themed cake for her?

Third, I'd like to maybe get a little cake for the inlaws. I'm hoping that we can get them an ADR at the California Grill. Is it possible for me to get something set up ahead of time? The trick with this is that it'll be a surprise so I won't be there when they get the cake. How do I ensure that they'll get it?

TIA! :thumbsup2

I decided to order a cake from the boardwalk bakery instead of AKL. I spoke to Sandra. She was sooooo nice.

I ordered the mini wedding cake with mickey heads and flowers. She said she could incorporate the pink that was in my wedding dress and on our wedding cake.

I emailed her a pic of our cake and my wedding dress.

The cake flavor options are vanilla, chocolate, or marble. I chose marble. The icing is buttercream. The filling choices are buttercream, white chocolate mousse, chocolate mousse, and one other but I forget.. sorry. I chose buttercream because I didn't know if mousse would last in the fridge. We plan on just snacking on it throughout the week. It's small but I'm sure it's rich.

I'm excited! I'll post pics when we get back.

I just heard back from the chef today.
The cost of the cake was a bit more than I expected but it sounds sooooo adorable I went ahead and got it.

It will be in the same shape as the mad hatter cake but will be black and red. They are putting a white chocolate skull with glo cube in it to make it spooky. They are also adding a chocolate treasure chest full of beads and treasures that you can eat. They have a large golden madallion with skull and cross bones that they are going to add to it.

She described it MUCH better than I can :lmao:
But the whole thing sounds way too cool. :thumbsup2
I was quoted $130 for it.... I know I know expensive for a cake but this is a special birthday for him. I don't mind splurging a bit. Besides, he isn't the one to hit the gift shops and break me on Disney crap all week long :lmao:

He didn't want anything baby like and wanted something really cool and more his age. With the spooky pirate theme ~ I think I found the end all and be all of 12 year old boy birthday cakes! I told the chef the only way they could make it cooler for a 12 year old boy would be to add gallows and hang a princess from the gallows :lmao:
She laughed and said "we can't do that at Disney ~ but my son would LOVE something like that as well!!"

I will be sure to post pics of it when we come back from our trip ~ I still have 2 months but thats one more thing I can cross off my checklist!
