Official Cake Chatter Thread

My family and I are staying at the CR in early February. Seems to me there was a name of a gentleman that worked doing the cakes in the CR on the boards. Does anyone recall who he was and how he can be contacted? Also does anyone know if they still do the madhatter cakes?

Does anybody have any suggestions on what I should get on the top of my cake? I'm going for navy blue fondant with either white or silver stenciled mickey heads. I can't think of what to put on top. It's for DH bday so I don't want some girly flowers.

Anybody?

Also.. Do you have to pay for the cake when your order it , or when it is delivered. THX again!!

When I ordered an anniversary cake for my parents a few weeks ago, Pat at the Grand Floridian said I could not prepay for the cake. If you're dining at one of their restaurants, they just add it to your bill. I thought it was a little odd that they didn't want any credit card number or some sort of deposit before, but she said it was not necessary.

Just wondering if it is indeed true that one can order a 6in custom cake and if so how many does that feed. We will only have 4 in our party 2 being kids that are 3 and 5 so really we don't want to be stuck with too much left oevr cake. It's DS's 5th bday while we are there and he lokes the mickey head but I'm wondering if we should just get one of the mini ones and bring it with us to the crystal palace on his bday dinner. will they keep itin the kitchen upon our arrival if we do this. Also has anyone had one of these mini mickey heads and if so are they fresh or can you tell that they have been sitting in a display for a while?

6 inch will still give you ample left over. we went to 1900 park fare on the 7th and had a 6 inch customized. i still havent had a chance to add my pics to photobucket yet, but we are 2 adults, a 4 yr old and a 2 yr old. only three of us ate it and we had 3/4's of a cake left! we ended up bumping into some ladies at our hotel and giving them a third of it. then when we returned home we had 5 slices left to share with the inlaws.

sorry i cant help with the other questions.

I'm beginning to thinK Pat is a little off. She allowed us to prepay last month. Took our CC # and charge way more than expected by the price quote. We also didn't get the cake I ordered. If you do deal with Pat, my suggestion would be to verify everything a few days ahead of time. Or even better, ask for another contact person.

HI,
I'll be Boma's Nov 11 for my b-day. I have not read alot on here about cakes at AKL. How is their bakery? Can I have a custom cake made at AKL for dessert at Boma's?
Thanks,
Liz

LOL. I'm trying not to make mean comments, but I have to agree with you. Placing my order with her was extremely confusing and frustrating. She seemed to have a particular cake in mind and offered me that, but when I explained I wanted something specific, things became very fuzzy.

She would say something I asked for was not possible. I would let that go and move on to my next request, but then she would say my first request (that she just denied) was what were were doing. :confused3 When I asked her what my options were, she stated, "the cakes are customized." She then had a really hard time explaining the options I could have to customize my cake other than describing that first cake she seemed to have in mind. When I asked her to describe the fillings, she just kept repeating, "it's like a dark chocolate mousse....like a dark chocolate mousse", but couldn't elaborate. I felt like I was a dog chasing my own tail by the end.

I get the sense that either she doesn't have much contact or communication with the bakery in terms of what they can do, or she just isn't that experienced with cakes? Maybe she is just overwhelmed and disorganized. You definitely have to confirm everything. I confirmed with her three-four days before and got everything I wanted except the correct color scheme.

The GF and BW seems to be the only places to get the mini wedding cakes. I was told I could get vanilla, chocolate or cheesecake. The minis are so extravagant.

So I can order a mini wedding cake from the BW Bakery and pick it up? I know it has been discussed many, many times but I just need to make sure. Thanks!

You can get a double teered mini wedding cake but you cannot get the white chocolate topper. All the white chocolate toppers come from the GF. Yes, you can order it from the BW bakery and pick it up.

Thank you! I just want the cake, not the topper. Now I have to figure out when to order it. I'm going to surprise my husband with it.

i really want to have a cake for our upcoming trip....travel party is myself and 3 cousins. We are going on November 8th. DH's and kids are sitting this one out:cool1:
It's just 3 nights/4days. One of my cousins is picking us up at the airport and we're heading straight to the resort. We should be there no later than 2pm, if flight is in on time.

I booked Wanyama Safari for 4 pm that afternoon.

My first thought was to have a cake either at lunch at Sanaa, which is off the planning list because if the flight is delayed I have to cancel the lunch and we won't be able to get the cake back to the room if it's not ready before we head over to the safari.

So, then I was thinking maybe I can have it in the room when we get into our room. Do they do that? Have the cake waiting in the room for when we get there? I think if so, they can put the cake in the room once the room is ready while we are out on the safari tour and it'll be a nice welcome surprise for my cousins when we go back into the room, and we can have it throughout the rest of the trip.

Or, if that won't work, I was thinking of having it served for our dinner at Yachtsman Steakhouse on day 2 of our trip. But I really wanted to make a kind of leafy design with the chocolate elephants on top to go with our stay at AKV. Don't think I'd do that if we get it at Yachtsman??

Also, I'd have to take it with us to Jellyrolls, that's we plan to go after dinner.

I don't know what to do, any suggestions? TIA

With it being a shorter trip I'd go with having AKL do the cake. From our experience they won't have the cake in the room when you get there but as soon as you check-in Private Dining can be notified and it can be in your room usually within 30 minutes. They might put the cake in there after you are checked in but I believe you have to sign for it. I only have one experience with AKL and their Private Dining so I'm just going on that.

You can request a time for it to be delivered (as long as it's after check in). I requested my cake be delivered at 6pm.

ordered a cake for my son's birthday last weekend at 1900 park faire and was definitely surprised in both a good way and bad way at what we recieved.
When i placed the order, I wanted an 8 inch white cake with white chocolate filling and buttercream icining. He is a huge figment fan so I asked if we could do something figment themed on top with a purple color for the icing and orange trim. I was told we could do something with painted chocolate for figment but the icing had to be either white or chocolate. I said ok but please put in the request anyway. well the came did come out with a lavendar colored icing and orange and yellow trim. Very nice. the total price was under 50.00 with tax.
now the not so nice surprise. I have never had cake at disney and was expecting a four layered cake like what we get at our local bakery. but instead we got what I would consider one layer cake cut in half and filled with almost 1/2 inch layer of filling. Then it's piled high with icing. honestly most of the cake wasn't cake at all but a big sugary mound of filling and icing. If you like lots of icing and filling you won't be dissappointed but i honestly prefer that icing and filling compliment the taste of the cake, not overpower it. it didn't really taste bad, just very sweet. I will post a picture of the cake once my son gets around to downloading the pictures of the trip.

Did you have to be in the room to receive the cake or would they leave it there for you? I'd do it this way if they'll deliver it when we are on the tour, maybe with some balloons or something, so that when we get into the room it's a surprise waiting for my family as a special welcome.:goodvibes
I'm trying for an element of surprise for my cousins with the cake. I'm thinking if it's not going to work at AKV, I'm going to have it at dinner at Yachtsman :confused3:confused3 But ultimately I really do want it at AKV.

In a perfect world, Sanaa would hold the leftover cake from lunch (assuming we actually make lunch), and deliver it to our room.:sad1:
Unfortunately, not a perfect world and I'll have to figure out another way.

From what I understand we can't have it during dinner, as the dinner is a group meal with the participants of the safari tour.

I'm going to call private dining at AKV tomorrow and see if they'll deliver it while we are still at dinner with the tour, I hope so;)

Has anyone else have problems ordering a custom cake form Epcot?:confused3

oops wrong spot, I guest the powers that be will move it to the Restaurant side, sorry.

When I ordered I had to give a credit card & was told the charge would appear the day the cake is to be delivered! :confused3

That's weird. Maybe it's the price of the cake that determines if they require you to give a credit card number or not. My cake wasn't cheap. It was $71, but she refused to let me pay in advance. Was your cake more expensive? Maybe they need a credit card if the cake is over a certain price?

I have a question that I hope someone can help me with. I have ordered a cake that has fondant I assumed that it comes with buttercream underneath . Is that true or do I need to request the buttercream underneath?

I was asked for a credit card number for my $55 (estimated) candy order. I was also told it would be charged that day. I wonder if it is only charged if I was a no show.
