I posted this on the food porn thread, but also wanted to share it here.

This is the 6" chocolate cake we received for my mom's 71st birthday at the Coral Reef on 9/2/08. It cost $12.50 since we ordered it before the price increase. I truly wasn't expecting such a pretty cake, and my mom really liked it (we all did - it was REALLY tasty!).

Well, we're back tonight and here was the cake that I had made for my husband as a suprise last night.

Here's the original wedding cake.

The replica was impressive in person, but the top was not smooth at all. Even though they used fondant (the original cake did not have fondant, only buttercream...).

It tasted just okay...it was almond cake with bavarian cream. DH said it tasted really good, but I've had better. It was $58.55 after tax. It could have easily fed 8-10 people...probably more, as we cut it into the slices you'd get at a wedding, not big squares.

I agree with the post before mine about saving the cake for home if you're on the deluxe dining plan. If you're set on a cake at Disney (like me!!), I'd say if you're celebrating both birthdays at Coral Reef, that seems like the time to do the cake and have it for both of them. CM's does a cute Mickey head cake if that's something you're looking for.

As for the Buzz decoration, I don't think they can use Pixar characters to decorate cakes-not sure if he falls into this catagorey or not. If he does, stop at a local bakery or the party section of your store or Ebay to find something cute to stick on the cake before or after it arrives at your table.

I've been working with Theresa for our cake at CR and she's wonderful! I'll post pictures as soon as we get back too. We're having a white cake (as I can't stand chocolate-I know...I know...scary) but I'm sure if you like chocolate, it's good :goodvibes Sounds like we'll be there about the same times so I don't know that it'll help you too much.

Enjoy the birthday celebrations and be sure to share pictures when you get back! :goodvibes

Could I email Debbi at CR about the cake?? The pic below here is great and my ds saw it and flipped! He loves chocolate and strawberries. I could even put a small buzz and woody figurine in the middle of the strawberries if I wanted, huh??

OR would you get a cake from GF for our last dinner of the vacation at 1900 PF??? Which cake would be better?? The CR or the GF 1900 PF cake??? :confused3

Was this a Sara Lee cake or made at CR?? How was it?? It looks beautiful! My ds would love it...and so would my dh and myself!! hehe Who did you order it from?

Where did you get that awesome birthday ribbon?

I'd love to know about that ribbon too....please share!

Finally, one more question...what type of desserts do they give the birthday boy at the various restaurants....like CRT, CP, HDR, Ohana, Tony's, etc...my list is on the last page and I was just wondering if I would be duplicating by getting a cake at some restaurants....if anyone has celebrated b'day at several restaurants, could you share what you got for your b'day?? Was it a cupcake, ice cream, or another dessert...or nothing at all....

I initially spoke with Debbi at CR about the cake I ordered. I would think you could save the pic I posted and email it to her to see if they could do that. I believe it was made at CR. The server said something like, "they really did a nice job on this one" when she served it.

My mom received several cupcakes with sprinkles and a candle at 'Ohana, Chef Mickey's and Hollywood & Vine's Play n Dine.

Hope this helps! :wizard:

The ribbon that the PP's son has, I bought my nephew the same thing from the Disney Store. It also comes with a birthday hat. I bought mine about a month ago. I think I got it on sale for like $7.

Yes! I will save this pic and send it to Debbi. She's out of town right now but said she would be emailing me when she returned anyways so I can just send this and she can get back with me then when she replies to me about my menus/diver! Cool!! By the way, what did you do w/ the cake when dinne was over?? We will be going to watch Illuminations and such afterwards...wonder if they will hold it or will they put it in a box so we can put it under our stroller???

Now...should I do something at 1900 PF??? Hmmmm....I've heard the GF cakes are to die for but it's our last night there and we are going back to MK for the night...what would we do w/ the cake???

Cool...wonder if they have it on the website?? It is an hour to drive to our nearest store...or maybe they have it at WDW....I'll have to check it out! :thumbsup2 Thanks!

Our server took our cake and put it in a box for us. We ate some of it when we returned to the room and then put the rest in a Ziploc bag in the fridge (I had too much stuff in there and the box wouldn't fit). My DH had some a day or so later and it was still tasty!

The box was too big to put under our stroller in the bag (I have a Maclaren Quest), so we just carried it with us. It wasn't heavy. I would imagine they would hold it for you to pick up later that night - maybe Debbi can answer that when she gets back. Hope you have a great trip and birthday celebration!

Thanks for the info! I was just reading your trip report! What a precious family! My ds has the same type stroller...so I guess I will be carrying our cake too!! We are staying at ASMo so we don't have a fridge...maybe the cake will be ok for a day or so if the room stays cool. We shall see! Thanks again!

We're (I'm) taking plastic containers and zip top bags for cake storage back in the room. I'll certainly blow my cover if I carry that with me. I'm also taking small plates/bowls and plastic silverware just in case we want to snack in our room! :thumbsup2

Everyone's cakes are looking great and it seems like there haven't been as many problems as of late with getting what was ordered. Here's to hoping that trend continues! 9 days until we're at Disney. :cool1: (can you tell I'm starting to get a bit excited now???) I'll be sure to take lots of pictures and post when we return. We're getting cakes from Grand Floridian Cafe (mini castle cake and 8" vanilla Cars themed cake) and Coral Reef (8" Nemo themed cake).

Happy Cake Eating Everyone!

We are eating at 1900 park fare for DD's 6th brthday. I want to order a cake. I really like the mini castle cake but I am afraid that it will be too small. Can I have that put on another cake as a 2nd tier like? Has anyone doen this and do you have pics or an idea of price? Thanks!

When I called the Cake Hotline and got to the Grand Floridian, I spoke with Linda. She said to put the castle on the 8" cake would be $15 in addition to the cake itself. I don't know about a two-tiered cake with the castle on it as far as cost goes. I think I've also seen some pictures here on this thread with cakes like that.

Good luck!

I ordered the small cake for dd's 7th birthday in July and didn't bother with the larger cake.

I figured that 1900 Park Fare had more than enough desserts available for us to partake of and each of the three of us were able to have a small piece of the cake.

Even having three of us eating some of the cake, we still had HALF of it left and brought it back to our room.

I say don't spend the extra money and just go w/ the regular mini-castle cake!

DD does not like mousse. She likes frosting ( think grocery store cakes ).

Do all the cakes have mousse filling. I just wanted white with white frosting ontop and in the middle. Is this possible anywhere ?

I will know better in a couple weeks when I try them, but I would bet the $21 order-at-the-podium cakes have frosting between the layers and not mousse, a la grocery store cakes.

Also, the two different kinds of "mousse" that were in our Grand Floridian Bakery-made wedding cake were not light and fluffy like I think of mousse being. They were more thick and creamy like I think of frosting being.

The white chocolate mousse inside our cake tasted like frosting. Inside our other cake we had custard and strawberries, delicious! :goodvibes

Well, we got our 'Finding Nemo' cake at the YC last Sat. I wish I could figure out how to post pictures because it was a stunning cake. It had Nemo and Dory (flat, white chocolate) raised up on coral...white chocolate covered in cinnamon sugar. It was truly beautiful. So.....I cut into it, and my daughter-in-law looks at it and asks what kind of filling it has. I tell her it's a fruit/custard type filling. Oh, what kind of fruit she asks. I'm not sure...I tasted it and figured it was either strawberry or raspberry. Oh terrific...my daughter-in-law is allergic to strawberries, her dd, the birthday girl, is allergic to raspberries. Would have been nice if my son had mentioned this to me when we talked about cakes!!
The server came over, I asked her what fruit it was..she said she would go ask. She came back and told me it was raspberry!! Of course it was...now the birthday girl is picking around the filling. I felt so bad for her, and she was feeling badly for me.

But, they were terrific at the YC. They boxed the left over cake, as well as the beautiful topper, up in a box for my ds to take home with them. It was a great cake...tasted wonderful. Too bad there was an allergy issue...live and learn.

Diane -

It sounds like a beautiful cake - the pastry chefs are truly amazing. Sorry to hear about the allergy.

Sounds like a great cake! Too bad about the allergy issue...now you know for next time! :goodvibes
