I have a couple questions -

I'm doing the Glass Slipper Challenge. For proof of time, can I do a 10k this fall and submit it or do I need to do a half marathon? Either way, it has to be submitted before 12/1/14, right?

Is the race retreat worth the cost? Is it only for the half and not the 10k?

Another question! I have severe social anxiety and though I'm determined to do do the race even though I know there are some crazy crowds, I want to be prepared. Could anyone fill me in on what the crowds are like during, before, and after the race? I've never run a half marathon before either so I'm wondering if I'll be okay during the race. I'm very nervous about people seeing me when I'm running. There isn't a big cloud of judgement hanging over the runners, is there? These probably sound like dumb questions but any information could be really helpful in my avoiding a panic attack.

Oh, and I really want to get pictures with some characters during the run! Meeting them is wry quick, right? A picture and then you're on your way?

Yes, this race has very large crowds, but the vibe is very positive, if that makes sense. I've run this race twice all by myself, and never once did I feel judged for being alone. Most everyone is so focused on running their own race, that the judgmental vibe is almost nonexistant (at least in my experience, but I've grown pretty used to ignoring stuff like that, so maybe my radar is turned off).

This year, there were roughly 25,000 participants, divided between 16 corrals, so that averages to about 1,563 people per corral, so yes, you'll be surrounded by a lot of people at the start. If you're feeling anxious, there's nothing wrong with hanging towards the back, though the volunteers do urge people to fill in all available space. Even if you start in the back, it has no effect on your start time, since your race time doesn't begin until you cross the start line and your bib activates the tracking. Since it's early morning, you also have the cover of darkness for most of the time in the corrals, and for the first few miles depending on when you start.

In my experience (and correct me if I'm wrong anywhere, my memory is a little fuzzy), the race was most crowded between the start line up to MK, then it thinned out once exiting MK, then picked back up in volume around mile 11 to the finish. So you have a good stretch of about 3-4 miles where there's not as many runners around you. I'm not one for stopping to get pics with the characters, unless there's no line whatsoever, so the only character pic I've gotten along the race route was with Elastigirl at mile 11 in 2013. If I remember correctly, Captain Jack Sparrow and the Black Pearl are at either mile 2 or 3, so that's pretty early on, and most people stop to take a pic with him then, rather than stopping on the way back (since you pass by that spot on the return). I'd rather wait and get a pic with him in daylight anyway, but again, I'm not one for stopping, lol. Other heavy character spots are mile 5(ish) with the villains, then inside MK with the princesses (they're scattered about, with Cinderella, Tiana, Mickey & Minnie most memorably from this year), and I remember there being a long line for Belle around mile 6 or 7 in 2013, but I don't remember seeing her in 2014 (she must have been on break).

This is going to sound really weird, but I get a thrill seeing the green army man from Toy Story at mile 12. For some reason, he pumps me up so much, and seeing him is my trigger that I'm on the home stretch. Then seeing the Fairy Godmother and all the cast members with their mickey hand gloves yelling "high four!" in Epcot kicks in my afterburners and I'm shredding toward the finish. And that gospel choir just before you round the bend for the finish line as you exit Epcot is one of the most uplifting sounds in the world!

What kind of shoes are you in? How old are your shoes? Were you fitted for running shoes at your local running store (the Athlete's Foot, Point2, etc), or are they shoes you purchased on your own from a sporting goods store (Dick's, Sport Authority, etc)?

I second the recommendation to get fitted for running shoes. I would actually suggest finding a small, locally owned running store that will do gait analysis. I did my first 6 weeks of training without doing this, and I started to get shin splints and really bad leg pain (not just the normal "my legs are tired from working out" pain). I tried going to a big national chain store, and their idea of gait analysis was just to watch me walk for a few steps around the store. I found a locally owned running store that had a system where they put you on a treadmill, have you run for about 15 seconds, video your feet/legs, and then they will show you the video and walk you through how your foot is striking and what type of shoes you need. Based on that info, I found out that I was running in completely the wrong type of shoes. They had me try on three or four pairs that provided the support I would need, and I got an awesome pair that I love. With the new shoes, I've had NONE of the prior pain (except for the standard "my legs are tired" pain), and I feel so much better.

I tell you all of this because I was the type of person who thought I could figure out what type of shoes I needed based on internet research and just looking at how the soles of my shoes were worn down, which turned out to be totally wrong. I would definitely do some internet research, but follow that up with some professional advice from someone who can see you run and really knows about running.

I have a couple questions -

I'm doing the Glass Slipper Challenge.
1) For proof of time, can I do a 10k this fall and submit it or do I need to do a half marathon?

2) Either way, it has to be submitted before 12/1/14, right?

3) Is the race retreat worth the cost?

4) Is it only for the half and not the 10k?

1) you can do a 10k this fall, I did one in July, I'm doing one in Aug, and Looking for one in Nov.

2) correct

3) never done it, told yes, but I'm not going to pony up the cash this round.. maybe one day

4) Correct it only happens on Sunday, the day of the half

In my experience (and correct me if I'm wrong anywhere, my memory is a little fuzzy), the race was most crowded between the start line up to MK, then it thinned out once exiting MK, then picked back up in volume around mile 11 to the finish. So you have a good stretch of about 3-4 miles where there's not as many runners around you.

Yes you are correct. At the start because we all start together it's crowded then people find their pace and it starts to thin out. Then you hit MK and the course constricts and you end up with people slowing down and bunching back up. Once you get to the poly the lane is open again and things thin out. Then you get to Epcot and people are at the end of their burn, and the course narrows again, bunching people back up...

Now I'm not talking it gets like single file narrow, but you are talking about were people can only be 4-5 abreast walking, so 3-4 running at the tightest places. At the wider places (MK parking lot) you can easy get 7-8 people running.

For some reason, he pumps me up so much, and seeing him is my trigger that I'm on the home stretch. Awesome synopsis of the race - totally got me excited for those 13.1 miles!

Adding on to my last question about my social anxiety, if I did have a panic attack during the race bad enough to stop me running there's support around, right? I've never done an event like this before but I'd feel better if I knew there were medics or at least CMs around to assist me if I need it.

I have more of a general running question: I started using the Galloway app last week and around that time I began to get very, very sore. Not just in my legs, which I expected, but pain in my ankles, hips, and back too. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I'm pretty new to running so I really don't know if this is normal or not.
My first thoughts are:
1. have you been fitted for running shoes? The wrong shoes can wreck havoc on all sorts of body parts!
2. Have you run at all prior to starting the app? Is it maybe too much too soon? I'm not familiar with the app, so I don't know how much it's asking you to do right off the bat.
3. To a certain extent, there will be some pain associated with any new activity because you're asking muscles, ligaments, tendons to move in new ways. But I'm talking about some soreness after the fact and that goes away with rest or light activity. If any of the areas you mention hurt badly every time while running, I suggest talking to a doctor. That definitely shouldn't be happening.

Another question! I have severe social anxiety and though I'm determined to do do the race even though I know there are some crazy crowds, I want to be prepared. Could anyone fill me in on what the crowds are like during, before, and after the race?
I can relate - I HATE crowds and experience a fair amount of anxiety in them. But I can honestly say that I hardly feel it at races. It is crowded, in that there are 25,000+ people there, but it's not like being trapped in a confined space with nowhere to go. We're all running in our own little space within the crowd. I tried to find some pics to illustrate...

That's heading into the MK

In the porta-potties area outside the corrals

In a corral, waiting for the start. This is the only place that felt tight to me, but even then, no badly.

Oh, and I really want to get pictures with some characters during the run! Meeting them is wry quick, right? A picture and then you're on your way?
SUPER quick! Hand your camera to a handler, walk up, pose, click, grab your camera and run off!

Yep, a 10K is fine for proof.

Is the race retreat worth the cost?
Maybe... I've done RR the past 2 Princesses and don't regret it, but don't plan on doing it again. To me, the worth was in having a pre-determined place to be before and after the race, and for shelter from potentially bad weather. Everything else was a bonus. But now that I'm very familiar with the set up and know I don't need the extras of RR, I'm not feeling a need to pay the price, if that makes sense.

There are water stations and medic stations along the course. You can see them on the 2013 map ( I couldn't find a 2014 map, but the course was the same) and see if they feel frequent enough for you.

I'd say go find a 5k the next couple of months and do it, do one that is talks about it being "fun" Since I'm in Boston, there are basically 2 race-types out there. "Fun" and "Competitive" I stay with the ones that seem "Fun", the competitive ones are for people who want to do the Boston Marathon.

The runDisney events will be much better organized, but as far as I can tell, after a couple of years of running, and before that 10 years of cycling, they all operate about the same, with check-in, starts, water stops, bathrooms etc...

Does anyone know how the corralling works for the Enchanted 10k? On the RunDisney website it mentions that there is no certified finish time requirement but I have read on some other places that it does.

I guess what I am getting at is if there is no time requirement, how are people to corral for the 10k or is it on the honesty system and everyone lines up where they feel ?

Much thanks,

Orskan

I don't know if this will help or hurt. But...

If you stop for any reason out on the course you'll have a couple of people stopping to see if you are okay plus about 1/2 of the people that pass you will ask if you are okay. That is how it works at these endurance events cycling or running.

Those of us that start behind the first corral or two know we aren't doing 13.1 miles @6 min miles. Finishing +/- a couple of minutes doesn't make any difference.

Everyone wants everyone else to finish. Remember lightning McQueen pushing the king over the finish line. That's the way I think and it seems to be the way most think.

Keep your mind on the goal. Its all about walking around the parks that day in your race shirt with a medal ( or 4; 10k, 1/2, glass slipper and coast 2 coast; 38.6 miles) that is what is on my mind for the race.

It's a formal corral system and corrals are assigned based on the estimated finish time provided in registration. For GSC, they assign based on the proof of time we submit for the half.

Are any of you on FB? I'd love to have some of you as friends there. I need all the encouragement and excitement I can get training for this thing. I'm probably talking to some of you in the groups and don't even know it. I'd love to put faces with names and make some friends by the time Feb rolls around. So, please pm me if you want to be friends and I'll be glad to add you! :yay:

I know others will disagree, but... I strongly suggest entering what you think you'll actually run. Entering a time faster than that could seed you with folks who really will run it faster, creating frustration for both you and them.

Yes-- a million times yes.

I get that people are afraid that they're going to be swept. I've been on the lag wagon and know how it feels, and will do whatever I can to avoid that. But lining up outside your pace for the extra 5-10 minute "advantage" isn't all that helpful and can be dangerous for you and those around you. I've had collisions with slower and faster runners that have ended in injury, some within the first mile or two. That sucks way more than riding the lag bus.

I actually set that shirt up. Lol.

http://teespring.com/princesshalfsurvivor if anyone wants one. We are survivors!

This is HYSTERICAL.

I'm going to hop on the get fitted for shoes route.

If you go somewhere local and runner-centered, they'll be able to analyze your gait and put you in a pair of shoes that will minimize pain up your body. I've been wearing the same model for almost 10 years now, but will still go back every couple of years to get it looked at in case anything's changed.
