Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

How is training going for everyone? Did a killer 6.5 mile run last weekend, 11:12 pace. I had to walk a little at the end which stinks. I haven't been doing the best at short runs during the week which isn't helping. I ran 3 miles x3 this past week so I hope that helps for the next long run coming up!

It sounds like youre training is going great! Once I get past the 5 mile mark, I feel really proud of myself. It doesn't matter how many years I've been running! I think those midweek runs really do wonders for the long runs. I bet you will feel great on the next one!

Training for me is going fine. On Thanksgiving morning, I did not feel like going out in the cold at all. To make myself feel better I told myself I would do a 1:1 ratio just for fun (I usually run with a 9:1 ratio). I did 4 miles. Anyway, it was surprising that adding that much more walking did not slow my pace down too terribly. It went from 10:30/mile (that's my average pace) to a 11:01/mile. I guess with so many walking breaks, my running was a lot faster? Cardio wise, I felt like the work out was great! I think I will continue my slow jog thing that I normally do, but it was interesting to shake it up.

Doing my speed workout at the local high school for the first time tomorrow. I hope it goes OK!

Well it seems that my Achilles tendonitis is actually peroneal (sp?) tendonitis. I'm so tired of these injuries! So right now I'm icing, stretching, wearing a compression brace, compression calf sleeves etc. I may have to get more supportive shoes as my Nike Free's are probably contributing to the problem. Although some people think minimalist shoes actually help this type of tendonitis! There are so many conflicting theories! I maybe ran on a sloped road for 1/20th of my last run so would that really cause it? And I haven't increased my distance more than 10% a week and I am for sure not doing speed work (all the "common causes"). I wish I could figure it out so I could stop doing whatever "it" is that is causing these injuries. :(

I posted this in the W&D board so sorry to those that have already read it. So tired of injuries. :(

In college, while wearing highly supportive shoes, I pulled one peroneus longus tendon during a long run. Healed up (was on a varsity sport and got free PT), went out on another run, pulled the other. I was getting blisters on the medial sides of the bottoms of my feet, because the shoes weren't right for me, which caused me to run just a touch on the outer edges of my feet, and that was enough to tear them.

Now, 8000 years later (LOL, this happened in '89), I'm taking Ballet and my teacher tells me that I "sickle" my feet, meaning that my outside lower leg muscles aren't doing their jobs and I turn in my feet while dancing (ha ha...trying to do something resembling dancing). Surprise surprise, it's that same muscle/tendon area that I pulled so long ago.

Anyway, those were Nikes, too, but very supportive ones. I didn't buy another pair of "they run wide!" Nikes until 2 or so years ago. I find Nikes to be VERY difficult. They don't always make a real Wide shoe. They change them drastically (for my foot) every year. My current Frees are AWESOME (though NOT officially wide) The newest version? They are too narrow on the bottom of my foot, and started giving me hot spots on the medial bottoms of my feet. Talk about runner's PTSD! I returned them inside a week.

With more minimal shoes you have to build up your feet. I still haven't gone beyond 10K in my New Balance Minimus shoes; my feet just get too tired. My now-old Nike Frees can take me to 13+ miles but not much further than that! Because you are using your feet and ankles SO much more, because your feet are doing the work not the shoes, it can be hard. I do a ton of stuff barefoot; I do yoga, pilates, and Ballet, and we have a no-shoe home. I'm committed to working on my foot strength, and it works for me.

(I personally cannot go back to the shoes with more "control"...they were destroying my feet and ankles, causing them to get weaker and weaker...others have different experiences, feeling relief when they go back...they don't seem to make my Minimus anymore, so I have to seek out Merrels or Vivo or, nononopleaseno Vibram toe shoes in the future)

But really check out if you're bending out at your ankles; like what I did, it just pulled on those tendons a little too much with each step, until in my case they tore. At least yours are giving you an early warning! Fix it before it goes further.

Thanks for telling me all that! My Frees are the 5.0 and I honestly looovvee them lol, and the thought of changing to supportive shoes is so depressing! I hurt my left PT wearing Aasics that were very supportive (that's why I switched to the Nikes). We don't have a running store anywhere near me, but there is a New Balance store. I wonder if some version of those would work for me? They advertise that they do a very thorough gait analysis.

I don't think I ever hurt my Achilles, this pain is exactly like my last pain, same spot, other foot/leg. I did feel relieved to find out what it really was so I could treat it. And it is like 75% better since I started wearing my compression socks and KT taped it properly.

When I think of how I run I feel like I probably roll more to the outside of my foot, pushing my ankle out, pushing my foot inward, if that makes sense? My gait analysis last year that said I was neutral was done by a young girl with a serious attitude that I was bothering her, do I'm wondering if she was very thorough? She didn't have me run, just put me on a machine they had? So who knows. :( I didn't buy my Nikes from her, I got them at Dick's after she said I could run in anything.

Do you like your NB shoes? I may go in the NB store just to see what they say.

ETA: I do tend to get blisters on the outer edge of my right foot, just down from my pinky toe? I rarely get blisters but that is the only place I do get them when I do.

I am behind on my training for the January full. However I should be good to go for this one.

And ouch on the 100 pounds. That's a big dog
He is actually small for the breed. He has the Pyrenees part, but not the Great part. But he is pretty so we don't care. LOL!

Bruising is mostly healed so I should be back to running tomorrow morning. Unfortunately, this time of year, I am short on time so I'm glad I started training early on!

Sounds like what I was doing when I hurt myself. I was trying to stay off of the blisters forming on the inside of my foot. But you get them on the outside, hmm.

The gait analysis...that's what put me into the sturdy shoes. (The college injury didn't involve that...not sure it existed then, they were just "cute" and the Footlocker person said they ran wide lol) I finally realized that they never seem to put you back on the treadmill in the shoes you've chosen! So how do they know if you've changed anything?

I like the NBs but they don't make what I have anymore and what they have doesn't fit my foot. They are the Vibram sole but without the toe dividers. More minimal than the frees. I still haven't gone beyond 10k in them. If you look into something more minimal, just remember that you'll have to take it even slower than with the frees. It's like going to back to a couch to 5k, but slower. The feet have to build up. And your doctor probably won't agree with it. That Vibram class action scared people. But the people I know who did the work required to wear the minimals are very happy with their shoes. (Should mention that my closest minimal shoe friends are crossfitters who don't believe in running longer than a few miles)

I was fitted for my shoes at Fleet Feet. The lady was very knowledgeable and spent an hour with me, at least. I don't usually wear wide shoes, but she put me in wides. She was concerned about me getting the outside blister you're talking about. I'm very happy and no blisters or hot spots. Maybe a wide width would help with your blister issue.

Training is going well for me - my training program had me starting last week. Went out for a nice 4-miler yesterday. @disneydaydreamer33 - Like you, I have that "once I get past" mark, but mine is 6 miles. My current training program doesn't have me doing long runs over 6 miles till after New Year's, so I'm slowly tacking on mileage between now and then.

I've got my 5K outfit together...name that Disney character (it's a loose interpretation)!

Well I haven't been able to train at all . I had Sinus / deviated septum/ nasal valve collapse surgery on 10/30 and wasn't able to exercise at all until this past weekend. Last time I ran was on at the MCM 10k 10/25. I was able to run about a mile this weekend and for the most part my endurance and body felt good but my face started throbbing so I had to call is quits. I have 2 very long roads ahead of me. The first is just fully healing from surgery and the other is getting ready for the GSC.

I'm going to guess Daisy, seeing as I am going with her for either the 10k or the half, and have a purple tank, white skirt, and will do some sort of pink hair accessory;) Love it!

In my own costuming news, my daughter (who is all of 7) has decided for the 5k she no longer wants to go as Ariel, she wants to be Belle, because she thinks the costume will be easier. Lol! Maybe for her but now she wants me to be Mrs. Potts. Fell like thats going to be harder than my head to toe red for Sebastian plan.

Finally getting back to training after a brief hiatus post Avengers weekend races. Got in 5 miles today. Way faster than I meant to, not sure if that is a good or bad thing. It was cold (25 degrees), and my Garmin was covered with my jacket, so I couldn't see my pace. How I feel tomorrow will likely give me my answer. I am "attempting" the Runners World Winter Run Streak, running every day between Thanksgiving and New Years (37 days total), so I am trying to keep my runs more moderately paced while I ramp the mileage back up.

@DVCFan1994 I would say that Daisy is a great costume idea! :yay: ;)
Thanks, I'll be daisy and my sister will be Minnie. I'm leaning toward that for the 10k. For the half (unless we reverse order) I'll be Ariel and she'll be Ursula. I was good with Sebastian for the 5k until my daughter decided she no longer wanted to be Ariel for that. Less certain what to do with Mrs. Potts.

The first thing I thought of with Mrs. Potts was to use a shower cap or something to make her tea pot lid. :rotfl:

With white shirt and a pink/purple skirt with her tea pot pattern painted/sewn on? Something like that? :confused3

So ... I was looking through the official pictures from the Turkey Trot I did last week, and I saw a picture of someone wearing a Glass Slipper Training shirt! I wish I had seen her at the race, I might have said something.

Any chance it was someone here? Anyone here wear a Glass Slipper In Training shirt to a Turkey Trot in Prospect Park, Brooklyn on Thursday?

I like the shower cap idea! Thanks for that. I was also going to see if there were any custom Mickey ears out there. I'd likely just get a pink or purple skirt. I'm too cheap to get one and alter it such that I wouldn't wear it again post race;). I googled and found some cute ideas. Compression sleeves, one white one gold to work as a spout and pot handle. I might try making a tutu with alternating pink and purple.
