Official 2016 Princess Half Marathon Thread

I've been checking the prices for both flights daily since then - I'm not expecting the $140ish flight to decrease all that much, if at all, but I've REALLY been hoping that the return flight will. I just now checked it and it actually went UP to $297!! Yowza! :confused3 All of the flights that day have been like that. What the heck?! At least I don't have to pay baggage fees, I guess.[/QUOTE]

The Daytona 500 is the same weekend as PHM. MCO is the major airport for that event.
The flights coming back to Denver are super high on SW too!
I will need to book soon too....

As an aside, I continue to wonder how these companies/shops can get away with selling stuff that is clearly Disney-inspired from a legal standpoint. I know Disney went around and sent cease & desist letters to some Etsy shops while back (specifically thinking of those that were making the character-/attraction-inspired bows)...makes me wonder why some are okay and some are not. :confused3
None are ok, but they pop up faster than Disney can file the cease and desist.

I'm hoping to book our flights soon, too. As it is, the flights are already about $70 more total than what we paid last year. I only expect them to go up. What sucks is in order to get a direct flight, we have to book with Southwest out of an airport that's about an hour drive away from where we live, and there's an airport less than 2 miles from our house, but Southwest doesn't service it and the flights offered by Delta/United/American are outrageously expensive and have a connection in Atlanta. No thanks!!

OOOHHHHH. Okay, thanks - I had no idea!

You're probably right!

Hi all!

I'm new to all of this. I'm signed up for my first half marathon. I'm actually moving to Orlando in September so I figured why not try a Disney marathon?! The half is actually three days before my birthday so I'm hoping to be a birthday princess. Thinking pink and blue theme like the dress made for Sleeping Beauty's birthday. Any tips and tricks for a first time half marathon runner? I look forward to getting to know all of you!
I just moved to Orlando 2-ish weeks ago! And the race is 2 days before my birthday! It'll be a great birthday celebration :ccat:Also, this will be my first half as well. Yay for things in common, hahaha!

@preciouspups I feel you with the sweaty bands! I want them to work, but they keep popping off my head.
@Luv2Run I am having costume envy with that skirt! I am going to look into those visors, I think I might need a red one for this race! I am having my top made custom by iGlow running and blue capris I already own (I may pack shorts too), I wore her complete Venellope costume this year as she is the perfect princess for me (I teach coding to my students). Super comfy and totally fun! For my day to day and local runs, it is sparkle skirts all the way!!! I will tell you, when it is cold and you layer on top of leggings, those shorts are just another layer to keep your booty warm!!

Well, I tried the Friends & Family discount code (DISNEYPAL for anyone that didn't get the email this morning) and it doesn't seem to work for the Princess shirts, so I'm going to pass on them. :(
Didn't work for me either. But there was a 10% discount if using your Disney Visa.

I ordered my running costumes from Iglowrunning on etsy. I'm happy to have read on here that someone else has used them and liked them. Being that this is my first disney run, I wasn't sure where to look for costumes other than etsy. iglowrunning had adorable costumes so went with her. I ordered them about 2 weeks ago as I wasn't sure if they would sell out. I have Anna for the 5k (my 9yr old son will be running as Olaf and my 5yr old daughter will be running her kids run that same day as Elsa), Aurora for the 10K and Elsa for the half. Kinda wishing I would have picked Ariel for one of them since that's the theme this year. Hopefully that wont be a big deal.

I loooove all of these costume ideas! Dreaming of putting together a princess running costume is half of the fun of planning this race! What is your opinion on dressing as princesses that obviously look so different than you (ie hair and/or skin color)? I've started to collect ideas for Tiana and Mulan as they are two of my favorite characters, but I don't want to make some kind of faux pas? :confused3

We lived in Newport News for four years and used the AirTran flight from there to Orlando a lot. I can't believe they did away with it!

Wanda and Iglowrunning on etsy are THE BEST!!! I am not a costume runner. I will only wear regular running clothes. So when my kids wanted to do a Beauty and the Beast theme for the PHM 5K in 2014, I told them they are welcome to run in full Lumiere, Cogsworth and Beast costumes, but that if I had to be Belle, it would be something I put together using regular running clothes. Then I found iglow and was initially skeptical, but her clothes ARE regular running clothes. And they are made to fit based on individual measurements, and I always ask her to make my skirts straight cut, so there is no extra material like in most costumey running skirts. I ran the 5K in the Belle-inspired top and skirt. But the real test was the minnie-inspired skirt (straight cut, with compression shorts attached) that I wore for the full marathon (with an athleta black tank.) It's the most comfortable running skirt I own - amazing. Not a single moment of discomfort for 26.2 miles. Love iglow!!!!!

I just started training this week. It's been fun so far! I've been using JG's 5k app mixed in with walking to get started. It's fun to dodge automatic water sprinklers early in the morning....

For those of you that have run for awhile, what's the best way to get loose and warm up before a run? I'm still trying to find a warm up routine to use in the morning.

Thanks!!

PS. LOVE all the costume ideas! I have to get together with my friend, who decided to join us for the 5k, and see what we can come up with.

Yeah, I did think about that. I'm trying to be a little more responsible with my spending, though...25% I would have gotten the shirts. 10%, I'm going to be good and pass. :) I'm really wondering if these shirts are going to look a lot like the actual race shirts...they remind me of pictures I've seen of past year's shirts.

Really smart to order them so early - I've read posts where people waited and then didn't have them in time for the races. Great choices!!

IMO, dress how you want to dress. :)

This is probably not a good thing, but I am a morning running and I don't really warm up. I start off running at a more relaxed pace and then just use that as my warm-up. If you look in the documentation from Galloway, he does write out a warm-up that people can use. Glad training is going well for you!! :)

Last night I sold 2 skirts on Facebook...then I turned around and ordered a solid white skirt for my Daisy outfit (also planning on using it for my Tink half outfit) and a solid blue skirt for my Flounder outfit (which I'll first use for my Disenyland 5K Mouseketeer outfit). :) Yay!

I'm like @Ariel484 - I hardly ever warm up and use my first mile as my warmup. That's usually for shorter distances; for my long runs (anything over 5 miles) I'll do 2 or 3 sets of 10 jumping jacks, 10 high knees, and 10 butt kicks. I'll shake out my arms & shoulders, do a few torso twists, then start running. In colder temps (anything below 45F), I always warm up, no matter the distance, short or long runs alike.

And no matter what distance I do, I always stretch afterwards. Long runs I'll also foam roll, and really long runs I'll actually do about an hour of yoga afterward.

...yeah, I am misbehaving all over the place with stretching and whatnot. :guilty:

For long runs, like short runs, I start off at a more relaxed pace to use that as my warm-up. I always say I'll foam roll, but then I don't do it. For shame.

BUT BUT BUT, I do go to yoga regularly, and I've been really good with strength training lately...so there's that. :)

I don't think it makes a difference - I remember seeing a non-Middle Eastern Jasmine last year, and if I really thought about it, I'm sure I could think of other examples of people who didn't look like their princesses. My sister DisneyBounded Rapunzel, and she's got dark hair ...and I did Anna, also with dark hair. I think that people will see you as the character if the costume matches, even if the person in the costume looks nothing like the character.

For those of you that have run for awhile, what's the best way to get loose and warm up before a run? I'm still trying to find a warm up routine to use in the morning.

I'm the worst person to ask because I have terrible running habits, but ... I walk. I usually run in a park that's about 0.5 miles away, so I walk to the park as my warm up and then start running once I get there, but if I'm short on time or running anywhere other than the park, I'll usually walk a few blocks before starting my run.

@lauriko I think one thing you can take away from the warm-up discussion is that different things work for different people!* It might take a little bit of trial and error but I am sure you will find what works for you...that's part of what training is about.

*And I don't mean that with just warm-ups...also applies to nutrition before/during your run, what training plan you use, what run:walk ratio you use if you use one at all, what kind of cross training you do, etc. I have come to realize that running is not a one-size-fits-all sport, so it just may take you a bit to figure out what works best for you and your mind/body. :)

:)

My first thought was left over tech material. The purple looks identical to last years 10k, the white to 2014 10k and the pale blue to this years GSC challenge. The half for 2015 was pink.
