Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

Mine are locked in a safe until I figure out where to display them. No touchie zee medals. :lmao:

:goodvibes

Mine are cleverly put away in a pink box I got from Ikea, along with all my bibs (attached together by safety pins, in the order that I ran the runs). I did have my bibs on a wall, Tibetan prayer flag style, but it was getting overwhelming for the space they were in. One day I took them down to fix the pins and make it nicer, and it just never went back up. Hmm.

Seems the only thing I have on display is my cute clear pink Vinylmation figure with the $1.95 mini-medals from the Disney races around its neck! Better than nothing!

Couple of questions, hoping someone can answer. I posted a 4 hour 11 mins time at the London marathon this summer, so my aim is to break the 4 hour mark. Has anybody got any info as to wether the wdw marathon is considered a fast course or not?
It's flat but I wouldn't consider it to be particularly fast. There's the potential for crowding, as previously mentioned. There's also a lot of turns and corners and curves. They don't necessarily slow you down, per se, but they make it harder to run the tangents, causing you to run extra distance and use up valuable time.

Lovely stuff! Thanks Ariel484 and castle2castle, cracking info. And rest assured I'll be using my best Kung fu moves to ensure no one goes anywhere near my finishers medal:dancer:

Question for folks doing the Jeff Galloway training for the Marathon:

Does the "4 x 1 mile" this weekend mean this thing?

"Speedwork: one mile repeats are included to improve speed. Do the standard warmup, followed by 4 accelerations that gradually increase to workout pace. Run each one mile segment 30 seconds faster than your goal pace, and walk for 5 minutes. Then repeat as noted on the schedule."

So run 1 mile a bit faster than normal, then walk for 5 minutes, repeat 4 times? I think that's it, but wanted to double-check just in case.

Thank you! :goodvibes

4x1 usually vary by trainer I think. Mine likes to throw them in occasionally and our formula is 1 mile warmup, followed by the 4 reps at our 5k pace, with 90 second breaks in between (though mine tend to border on two minutes just because its easier to track), and then a 400 meter (translates to quarter mile) cool down. But yeah you have the basic formula there.

Ours never mentioned about gradually accelerating into our workout pace. But then again we do a full mile warmup for this run. Yeah the mile warmup can be boring as heck (this isn't the only run we do them on, pyramid runs among other things we also do the full mile plus a full mile cool down) but it does get you warmed up.

Hi all,
Apologies if you've been over this already, I did have a trawl through and couldn't find anything. I'm already thinking about pre and post race fuel (foooood!!).
The night before the race we're booked at the flying fish cafe, and the evening of the race were in teppan edo. Anyone got any thoughts on either of these as pre/post race eateries? Also what do others have booked and for what reason?
I booked a restaurant in Epcot post race so I can sample alcoholic beverages from around the globe as big well done to me

Most people advise eating something before the race that you know your stomach can handle. I have a strong stomach so I am not overly concerned, but some people are more sensitive than others.

The night before the half, we will just eat something at our resort food court...probably some kind of pasta. After the half, we are having lunch at Yak and Yeti. That plus another food court dinner will be our pre marathon fuel, and after the marathon we are eating dinner at Chef Mickey's! I figure that a buffet will let me choose whatever kinds and as much or as little food as I am feeling up to, plus I can't wait to take pictures with the characters and my medals!

Drinks around the world after the race sounds delicious, though I think I personally after running that much I would have one or two and then be crashed out on a park bench:rotfl2:

Assuming you start around 6am, you'll need to run the first half in close to three hours in order to reach EE when it is open. That's a much slower pace than you ran for the 2:10 you submitted, roughly 3-4 minutes per mile slower. I'd be more worried about adjusting to a pace that much slower than your normal pace than I would be about the sweepers. Running slower than normal always is painful for me unless I've trained for it.

The sweepers start around 630 and will reach EE in about 3.5 hours (10am), so you should be well away from them in any case.

Thanks for the advice! I am definitely worried about running slower. I generally do my long runs at around a 9:30 pace, and I estimate that I'll have to keep about a 13:30 pace to reach everest at 9. However, I've been doing some training runs with a friend who runs at about a 12min pace, and have adapted to that ok....I'm hoping if I can run about that for the first half and make a lot of stops I'll make it!

I did the Dopey thing this year and thought riding EE would be a good break. I had no problem getting in the car. I realized I had a problem when getting out of the car. My body did not want to cooperate. Once back on the course, my mind said, "Time to get going." My legs said, "Think again." It took about a mile before my body and mind were on the same page. I'd do it again.

I am a little afraid of that happening, but I think I want to risk it anyways, so its good to hear about your experience and that it was worth the trouble!

I'm guessing it's really a personal preference for the type of food you like to eat. Pre-run go for what works without eating so much you have GI distress next day during the run. And post-run considering just how many calories you'll be using during the run go for what you love! :)

Pre run for me is my wife's "I Ran the Half" celebratory dinner and she chose Via Napoli. That works ok for me since I'm not a big Italian food fan. I can eat some carbs and will be able to control my food intake so I'm not bursting for the Marathon.

My post-run "I Ran My First Full" celebratory dinner is in...(drumroll please!)... BOMA!!! I fully intend to devastate that delicious all-you-can-eat buffet! We'll be staying at Kidani post-marathon, so I should hopefully be able to stumble back to my room before I go into a food induced coma. :hyper: ;) :thumbsup2

Stick with what works best for you. You should have a pretty good idea of what you can eat based on how you have felt during training runs. I have learned that I can eat pretty much anything and be fine. I don't notice that I feel any better or worse depending on what I ate. I get random occasional GI problems (never anything horrible), but they never seem to be due to any one thing that I can really pin point. Case in point, on Saturday night my dinner consisted of a Subway turkey sandwich, a big slice of pumpkin pie, and an entire bottle of wine. Sunday morning I did 13 miles and had one of the best training runs I have had in a while. :confused3:laughing:

My usual pre-marathon dinner is sushi, but I've also been to Flying Fish. It's a perfectly good place to go as long as you eat what you are used to. I don't like stuffing myself with carbs the night before a race, so when I was there I had grilled fish and a small helping of risotto. The key is to not do anything or eat anything you haven't done in training. Stick with what works.

No rules regarding moving back in corals to start later than bib placement so reaching EE too early would not be too much of an issue. I don't stop for pictures or rides but do stop at mile 15 for my off course McDonald's M&M McFlurry. I have started with the Balloon Ladies and never had an issue passing people.

Just shorten stride and increase cadence until blood and muscles start doing their thing. Helps me after getting off my bike after riding 112 miles and then having to get into marathon mode for an Ironman.

I just heard that WDW has opened up some half and full marathon spots for January. I guess Goofy wasn't at 100% so they decided to break it up.

Hope this helps some people that wanted to get in! :thumbsup2

Apparently there was such high interest rate from last weeks Extreme Weight Loss show that they decided to take some of the goofy and split it up for the individual races. Makes sense. But it is kind of interesting how many people are now complaining about the price. You think they would have looked that up before making demands. But that's just me.

And I hate to be the pessimist but since we don't know how many spots they added exactly I'm all ready thinking about the increase in crowd. At least I'm not in the last corrals anymore I guess.

Now I really do need to see if I can make another PR in October.

As you said, they split up Goofys. So there's no more than they originally wanted.

Want to mention that at least one travel provider still has Goofy, 10K, and 5K bibs. I just got DS and DS 5k bibs, and I'm soooo excited! It was weighing on me that I managed to sleep in on registration day for it ("you had ONE job, Molly...") and missed getting them signed up. Not sure why I hadn't checked all through the travel providers in the list on rundisney, but a recent post here made me look!

(of course, since I did sleep in, I still owe them the Avengers 5K for next year, LOL, which of course means I might just be shooting for a C2C *next* year, too! I mean, I can't let just them run, can I? ;)

Oh doh. I should have realized that. Not sure how I got that mixed up.

Good to hear you got the 5k bibs.

hi all!

signed up today for the full via the goofy giveback! after princess this year, i decided that 2015 would be wine n dine and then maybe the marathon in 2016. well, might as well extend my training for the Philly Full (11/23; it will be my first!) another month or so and just check WDW off of the bucket list all in one go. :)

i really loved the princess thread leading up to the race this year, so i look forward to catching up on this thread over the next couple of days and joining the conversation. :yay:
