Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

I posted a question I received on a rD survey about marathon weekend. It asked about interest in a tie-in cruise after marathon weekend. I have no idea if they are actually planning on offering it or not... I just posted the question.:)

Beware drawing conclusions from the rD surveys. I am still waiting the announcement about the Disneyland Paris half marathon.

I'm in....I ran last year's marathon (4th overall) after taking ten years off of marathoning and it was an incredible experience. Last year's Marathon thread was full of great info and definitely helped keep me updated and prepared.

I have some questions for you guys. So what's the minimal distance you have to submit for a time for the marathon? And does it have to be within the last year? And when does it have to be sent in by? I did the ToT in October (more for fun than for time) and then I'm running a 10 miler in May and not doing another big race until a 1/2 in November.

For this year's race, you needed to submit a time from a race 10 miles or longer that took place after 1/1/12. The submission had to be in to runDisney by 11/1/13.

Somehow I went from, I will NEVER do this again to being all set to go Dopey for a second year in a row. My sister's response was, "I knew I should've recorded you Sunday night..."

So I think I'm going to do it.....run a half marathon at Disney!!!!

I have been reading a lot about the Disney Half Marathon in January but noticed there is a princess marathon in February. Does anyone know if there is a difference between the two (Course, excitement, etc?) I think February benefits Children's Miracle Network but I really don't know much about either race.

Thanks!

I've done the WDW half marathon twice now but have never done the Princess half. My thoughts are that the WDW half marathon is part of the entire marathon weekend at Disney, where the Princess half is the main attraction for the weekend in February (although they did add the 10k to the weekend). The other biggest difference is that you will see a large majority of female runners doing the Princess half (although I understand there are quite a few men that run as well), where the WDW half is a pretty good 50/50 mix, but I still think there are more females at the starting line than men.

Obviously, the WDW marathon medal and shirt is a version of Donald Duck and the Princess half marathon medal and shirt are princess related.

The courses are pretty much the same (and may be exactly the same). The picture opportunities will probably be a bit different as I would expect more princesses to be out on the Princess half marathon course.

All in all, they are both great races to run for your first and I highly recommend doing either as your first half marathon!

That is so helpful and exactly the info I was looking for!! Thank you so much. I think then I will do the Princess for my first half since it is school vacation and I will need the kids as a cheering section to get me over the finish line :cool1:

I just wanted to throw in that your decision may depend on where you live. If you live in a colder climate, the weather is usually a little better for training and travel in early Jan vs late Feb.

My favorite place to run has been covered in snow since the end of Dec. If I had been training for this year's Princess, I would have been miserable trying to get the last few long runs in on busy roads or on the treadmill.

Just my 2 cents! :thumbsup2

I totally agree with this. I run in New York, and even a January marathon is hard to train for. it would have been impossible for me to race a half this weekend.

Today, I thought I would get to do my first outdoor, weekday training run since ... November? Early December? I don't even remember.
Well, the temperature was willing, but the thunder and lightning were not. Treadmill yet again!!! :(

I agree with this as well, BUT I can't tell you what I would do to get out of this weather for a long weekend right now. It was nice to be in Florida in early January, but I wasn't so sick and tired of the cold and snow, but now I am. I would even dress up as a princess if it would get me to 85 degree weather :rotfl2:

I always said the only Marathon I would ever do / enjoy would be the Disney one so 2015 is my year. I hadn't planned on doing the Dopey Challenge until I foolishly opened my mouth to a friend who is well up for the challenge so Dopey 2015, you're mine!

(Have the dates been released yet?)

It's usually the second weekend of January, so for 2015 that would be Jan 7-11. If you're going to sign up for any of the races, have your money ready for April registration, which will likely be between April 16-22. Goofy will likely sell out very quickly due to it being an anniversary year, and the other events could go equally fast, selling out within the day or a few days of registration opening.

I'm thinking about getting some compression socks. If anyone wears them, please give me some feedback. Brands? Do they work?

I always wear compression sock for half marathon+ races. For me they really work, less fatigue, reduced soreness which helps me recover from long races or consecutive races like a Dopey. I've tried several different compression socks and the best ones for me are 110% Play Harder.

Hi Everyone! We are planning a girls only trip to run just the 10K. We can just register for the 10K, correct? And is that usually on the Friday?
Does the 10K registration quickly sell out? I want to make sure everyone knows this and registers as soon as we can.
Just trying to figure out dates. Thinking we can arrive on Wednesday and leave on Saturday?
