Official 2015 Disney Marathon Thread

There are 2 reasons I haven't gone to a doctor yet: 1)If they tell me I can't run, I'm going to ignore them anyway, and 2)If it's less serious, I am not going to pay someone to tell me to rest and ice, which I'm already doing.

This exactly why I don't go to the dr. Except in the case of September when I rolled my ankle about .5 miles into my 10 miler and then fell forward. I thought I broke my elbow so needed X-rays. Of course that accident put me sorely behind in training and I tried not to ramp to fast but now my knee is bothering me. I have stuck to machines for the last two weeks hoping the resting of the knee will give me a chance to complete Goofy.

I know its a little late for this now, but food for future thought: have you considered seeing a physical therapist? I feel exactly the way you do about doctors-I actually avoid them at all costs. However, I found that everyone in the physical therapy office was super knowledgeable, and they are used to dealing with athletes, runners, and sports injuries, and had better suggestions for me than to simply stop running.

Hope your injuries cooperate for the races, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

The poll for the marathon weekend song is up on the rundisney facebook page! What did you guys vote for?

I wasn't in love with any of the choices, but I voted for Shake It Off by Taylor Swift. Cheesy and overplayed as it is, it always makes me run with a little more pep when it comes up on my playlist!

I went to a PT for IT band issues last year and don't really feel like they helped me. By the time I got an appointment with an orthopedist to diagnose the issue and give me a referral to the PT, and by the time I got my first PT appointment, the problem had started going away on its own. The woman wasn't particularly knowledgeable about running, and she made me do the same exercises everyone else with "knee" problems had to do. That experience has tainted my views on PT a bit! I will most likely be going to the doc when I return from FL. I am not 100% against going, I just didn't see the point in going 10 days from my trip when there was little they could do.

I plan to walk all of the races with little jogging spurts here and there to keep my pace low enough. If the pain gets to a point where I have to limp, I will stop. Unless that happens during the marathon, in which case I will limp as far as I can go ;)

I'm starting to gather up all my stuff to pack and was wondering if we have a consensus on whether or not "throw away clothes" will be needed before the start of the full marathon on Sunday? I'm trying to pack as light as possible--so I'm thinking of not packing a throw away jacket...but what are you all doing?

Here's a Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah Tip for Today (anybody else old enough to remember that little song?):

When you pack your race shirt, pin four safety pins to it. That way, if you lose the ones they give you or if for some reason they give you three instead of four, you'll be covered. A little thing like missing pins can really freak you out at 3:00 in the morning on race day!

Hello everyone,
This is my first post in nearly a year. I am a total beginner and will be participating in the half marathon. I had been training much more actively in the summer but have come down with numerous colds and flus over the past 2 months which has put quite a damper on the training I was doing. Since I've gotten set back on the training I am wondering if anyone else has half speed walked/ half jogged a half marathon before. That seems like it may be my best bet as today I am laid up in bed with another cold :/. Any advice would be much appreciated. Also, as I said I am a beginner. The longest I've ever ran competitively was a 10K. So, if anyone has any additional advice for running a half marathon please, any would be appreciated!

Yeah, the medal is fantastic. Definitely my favorite that I have as well...makes me wonder what they'll come up with for marathon #25. :scratchin
I can't wait for 2018

I was really hoping for Immortals from the big hero 6 soundtrack. It's one of my go to running songs now.

I'm more worried about standing in rain than in the cold. so I'm looking at a garbage bag to toss.

I don't know I would probably try to do intervals. Something with a 2 to 1 or 1 to 1 ratio of walking to running. So long as your not getting swept I'd start out at a pace that feels really easy.

I have been training to run/walk for the Goofy challenge. I find that 40 seconds walking and 20 seconds running is the perfect interval for me. You can totally do it!!!! Lots of people do the run/walk method! Even without training you will probably be fine. Not to say it is smart(and take my advice with a grain of salt).....but I think most people could do a half marathon in the alloted time willy nilly without any training. You might feel pretty bad the day after, lol....but you can do it!!! At the very worst....at least you are starting it!!! Things happen and sometimes you can't train like you want to.....Prayers and pixie dust heading your way!

I'd bring something to keep the dampness off of you. It most likely will not be cold, but there's a good chance of fog, mist, rain showers, and actual rain.

Congrats on the 10k.....running a half is basically two 10ks and a small jog to the finish. You definitely can do it, just stay confident, strong, and try to keep moving as every step will get you closer to your goal.

I am no expert or speed demon but each race builds confidence and experience to tackle new challenges. I've done several marathons and halfs and typically see the speed walkers and the run/walkers at every event. My first marathon I cramped up so bad that I got passed by some speed walkers but we all finished in plenty of time.

I haven't been able to train much either the past few months but looking forward to the experience and seeing all of the parks, people, characters, and great runners like yourself. Have fun!

I have had mixed luck with PT - but a good one can really help. If you don't want to go to an appt (I'm the same with minor injuries!) - strengthen all the glutes muscles. You can google exercises for hip stability and runners with knee pain.

I have done run/walk intervals for all of my races. I think the key to being under-trained is not to over-exert yourself too soon. Take the first 6 or 7 miles at an easy pace for you, maybe more walking breaks than you think you need, to make sure you have the reserves to finish the second half. You can do it!

I'm also bringing some large trash bags as throwaway ponchos!
Even if the temperatures are going to be warm, it can be a really long time in the corral. And maybe I just get cold easily, so I usually bring something. In the past, I bought a clearance bath towel at Kohl's, so I could either wrap it around my shoulders, sit on it, stretch, wrap it around my legs, etc.

I wish it said cold under Sunday. I know the high won't be reached by time I hope to finish, but I'm sure it will be warmer than the run I did today, 9 degrees with the wind chill!

I'm going with large garbage bags due to the warmer temps and possible rain, along with plastic grocery bags for my feet in case more rain appears. No sweatshirt or warm up pants in my bag.

Thank you all so far for your tips. I dragged my but out of bed and got a 5k under my belt so at least I'm keeping the legs active at this point. I think I'm probably going to try to do 30 seconds walking: 30 seconds jog/running, or 1 minute:1 minute at least until I see how its going. Ideally I'd like to be able to get back to 1 mile jog, .5 mile walk but we will see how I feel. I am relatively confident I won't get swept, but if nothing else at least it is an experience right? One more question for anyone that may be able to answer. As I said before the most I have ever run was a 10k competitively and I never found myself needing water until the end. With this being so much longer is it necessary for me to bring water with me during the race? I know there are water stops. Have you found that they are placed well or have you discovered that you typically need more?

I am bringing one throw-down sweatshirt as a just in case, but I doubt I'll use it. We have some old mylar wraps from other runs and we are going to bring those. That should give some warmth and protection from rain.

Based on the current forecast, I think a throw away top will be useful on every day except Sunday. It's pretty humid down here, and even the 50 degree temps predicted for the start on Friday and Saturday will feel chilly because of the moisture in the air.

Thx a mint for posting the shirt pics! I thought last year's were gorgeous - like how they had a "hidden Mickey" icon watermarked behind the main logo - so a bit disappointed with this years, especially the Goofy. It'll be very disappointing if Dopey's lacks the total mileage or "4 races" type of info on it - c'mon I want bragging rights! :lmao: Hopefully they all look fab in person!

I know it's stupid, but I would never live with myself if I skipped Dopey because something might go wrong. I don't want to do Dopey again so this is it for me. I'd rather miss the rest of 2015 than miss Dopey!

The possible good news is that I seem to be able to walk just fine, although I haven't walked long distances or power-walked. The pain started at some point during my Dopey simulation weekend and I ran my 20 miler with it. It was bearable then, so we will see. Fingers crossed!

This is totally me and my mindset! Last simulation, 20 miles and outer foot hurts. Took 2 days for it to go away but has come back with both my 6mi taper runs, albeit much less painful and gone within a day. I'm just telling myself it's taper madness! Good luck to both of us! :grouphug:

+1 :thumbsup2

This has been an awesome thread with so much helpful info! Can't believe and can't wait that it's finally here! :cool1: Safe travels and good luck all! :goodvibes

cheers,
:)

I'm not an expert in run/walk, but when I was recovering from a broken ankle, the recommendation was to do shorter intervals at particular ratios, rather than longer. So if you want a 2:1 ratio, pick something like 2 min/1 min rather than 1 mile/.5 mile. It allows for more frequent recovery by the body.
