OFFICIAL 2014 WDW Marathon Countdown: WE DID IT! Congrats everyone!

So I'm not sure what to make of this. A few days ago I decided to use the elliptical and bikes at the gym instead of running. The next day my Achilles' tendon was sore and it hasn't gotten better yet. I skipped my other run this week to rest it. Today I jogged a little during a 5k walk and it didn't feel right. It's not painful but I'm afraid it will turn into something worse. I'm supposed to do 10 miles tomorrow and 20 next weekend before my taper.

How should I handle this? Is there anything I can put on my ankle to prevent more injury? Should I skip this run all together?

Won't comment on skipping run but sounds like you set your spin bike up wrong. Probably put excess strain on your calf and achilles got sore as a result.
I see so many people who don't know how to be fit on their bike and it creates so many issues. Hope all is well. Good luck.

Disney just got more money from me for a Kid's race. I guess the 2 YO cannot feel left out since I am doing Dopey and the wife and two older sons are doing the 5k. There is another $30 Disney You're welcome.

What, no souvenir Mickey ears for the wee little runner? ;)

All you knee pain people out there I have a question for you.

My right knee is killing me lately, mostly on the outside. Typically, it's runs over 5 miles and anything that has even the vaguest hint of a downhill to it the knee will hurt. I did 19 last weekend walking the downhills and it was uncomfortable but manageable, no pain afterwards.

Today I (stupidly) went downhill and afterward I could barely walk. Even just touching the area hurt. Now, a couple hours later, I'm golden and the knee feels fine. It's been coming and going, but I'm at a loss now.

I am in that boat too. My right knee will be the one to give in and I always wear a knee brace on it...and actually have one on my left knee (around the ankles until needed) just in case.

I remember last year I was doing the Goofy and the 5k and the day before ANY of the races my right knee started bothering me to a point of limping!!! I was in Disney for goodness sakes and walking around the Epcot resorts area and it was really bothering me! I had to go back to the room and put a brace on it just for walking around! Of course I was in a state of panic that it was starting already BEFORE I had even done the 5k...and to be frank I thought I was going to cry that it started up at that point.

Okay so the totally biiizzzzaarrreee part was that it NEVER bothered me from the next day onwards! I had NO knee pain for the entire Goofy nor the 5k...

So how bloody strange is that???

It strains sometimes and it bothers me...though never that bad that I cannot touch it...but it gets stressed...however I did the Goofy and suddenly its totally okay, no problems, nadda, nothing, nu uh. It never bothered me at all after the races...nothing.

I never went to a doc or anything. Most of the time its fine...meaning I wear a knee brace in a race and at the end of the race (with the exception of Disney they are all half marathons) it will start to bother me...except for the Goofy...because that was longer and it didn't bother me. I am not complaining at all! Just strange.

I understand how more corrals containsing less people means that many of us will be in a diff coral,

But my confusion is in looking at finish times are anticipated by Disney fora specific corral in the FULL vs the HALF:

I'm in "k"...........Corral k for the full I 5 hr timing. But for the half Corral k is over 3 hrs.
It's like Disney is telling me how to pace myself, without actually using words!

$15 for the race registration and $15 for the Mickey ears then a couple more bucks for Active fees.

I saved money by talking the older kids out of running the Mickey Mile, they are running the 5k.

Coach, since you are so kind to dispense advice, here is another question from a "seasoned runner". I am a 56 year old female, have 3 Goofys and 2 other marathons, plus well over 20 half marathons under my belt over the last 9 years, and am scheduled to run the marathon.

For the last 18 months or so I have been having left chest pain issues that no doctor seems to be able to pinpoint - either GERD, fibromyalgia, costochondritis, gastritis, the list goes on. The pain is always there but the intensity changes daily. I have occasional stomach issues as well. I am 5'5" and weigh 130, so weight is not an issue. I am trying to eat gluten free to help the stomach, but that affects my energy level tremendously, and doesn't really relieve the chest pain at all. The pain does seem to be at a high level more frequently lately than it was when it first started.

I ran a 16 miler on Friday the 6th, and planned to do a 20 miler this Friday the 20th, but the 16 miler really made the pain flare up for about 6 days afterward.

My question is if you thought the 16 miler 5 weeks before the race would be enough to go ahead and try to run/walk the marathon if Friday comes around and I don't think I am feeling well enough to complete the 20. I am by no means speedy, but I hoped to finish around 5:15. I guess I don't mind feeling horrible after the marathon for a week because I will have completed what I set out to do.

I know I should probably listen to my body and maybe think about dropping out this time, but you know how it is when you make a goal for yourself - it's hard to give up. This whole issue is very frustrating when you think you are doing everything right to live healthy.

Thanks for the help. :)

Aha. :) I signed DS up for things so long ago I've lost track of the costs. :)

Jeanette, seems you're doing all the medical things to figure out what it is. Have you looked at other types of healthcare? I'm a huge proponent of good chiropractic care and acupuncture; sometimes weird things like no-other-explanation pain can be eased by one or both of those things.

Thanks for the advice. I do have a chiropractor that was recommended to me, and I think I am going to give that a try.

Hmmm, I goofed on the quote box - kind of a newbie at this!

I think you are good to go. You may want to try the run that weekend and give yourself permission to fail to a shorter distance before heading out. Another 16 mile run would be a benefit but if you end up ailing for a period of time as a result, it could be counter productive.

If you do not get out again, pull back the pace a bit and hang on on race day. More than likely you will feel the race hit you a little earlier than in the past, but keep your wits and you will be fine.

Oh no, you really NEED the synced and lighted ears for the young ones... $50 a pop.

Very good.

I didn't even TRY to quote people for the longest time. :)

I'm having shoulder stuff for no good reason, and if it weren't for my chiro and acupuncturist I would be huddled in a corner, crying. So thankful for them.

Thanks a million to Coach and Bumbershoot for the advice and words of encouragement. I'm going to have positive thoughts and hope it all works out.

I really enjoy reading all your discussions here. This Disney running board is very positive and upbeat. Others I have seen out there are not always so.

Thanks again.

I did 23.2 miles today on the treadmill...I cannot believe I nearly did a full marathon on a treadmill! The reason I didn't just complete the full was simply because the collection of shows I was watching were over...and there was nothing else to watch and I was bored.
I originally planned to go outside today but the weather was so crappy out...snow, ice then rain and dark all day...so my plans for going out where nixed.

Now that the race is just over three weeks away...I am not doing anything like that until race day. I am thinking of doing nothing tomorrow ... but the rest of the week throwing in a few miles a day on the treadmill...maybe next Sunday do 10 miles or so...winding it down....I think.

I have a recovery question. My daughter is running her first marathon then planing on Tinkerbell 1/2 in about 2 weeks. What are the suggested mileage for the interval between the two races. She is a ICU nurse working 3 -12 hour shifts per week. I've never run 2 races with that short a recovery period so I've no suggested distances for her. Thanks.

So, she is running a marathon on the 29th and then running think on the 19th of Jan or about 3 weeks apart. The traditional recovery period for a hard effort endurance event is one day per mile of race. Honestly, if a person stretches and comes out of a marathon healthy they really do not need that period of recovery. If she could hit 6 miles the first weekend and then 9 the following she should be fine.

I have 22 scheduled for Friday on the treadmill.

Yeah we just did 20 on a treadmill this past weekend. Well, my DH, BIL and SIL did. My IT band knee pain kicked up at mile 15, so I just had to walk out 2 more. But, I didn't want to risk hurting myself at this point. It will just have to be good enough. I felt good otherwise and feel confident in my ability to finish as long as I don't overdo it with the knee. Anyway, that many miles on a treadmill is sheer drudgery. We are finally supposed to get a bit of break from the weather next week and I hope to get back to running outside again.

If nothing else, though, the treadmill forced me into running in a hot, humid environment for a long run so that was probably good for me too.

Ventured out in the snow to do 10. Was supposed to do 12 but didn't have the time. So much better than the treadmill. Learned to not run under tree limbs. Had ice failing on my noggin. Other than that no issues. 20 next weekend then all downhill from there, taper here I come ;-)
