OFFICIAL 2014 WDW Marathon Countdown: WE DID IT! Congrats everyone!

My physical therapist is now having me include the foam roller in my therapy... I finally understand the complaints about it! I have only done it in the office so far, my roller for home use should arrive today... Yippee :(

I had a moment of craziness yesterday morning.

I have been in a bit of a funk the last few weeks. No runs scheduled to train for and no Disney trips to plan for:( We have been trying to concieve since I got home from running the Princess Half in Feb but no luck so far which has me a bit :worried: I don't have much motivation to run with nothing planned in the future and having been steadily gaining the 20 lbs I lost last year while training for the TOT 10miler and Princess Half.

As I was driving home from dropping DD off at camp, I had an idea:idea:

Why not sign up for the Disney full marathon? I thought to myself if it was still available it would be a sign to go for it. I got home, logged into RunDisney and there it was.. Marathon only 98% full:cool1: A few minutes later I was registered and had already printed of Hal Hidgeon Marathon training schedule.
Have to say I felt pretty good:thumbsup2

I spent last night coming up with a training schedule that would work for me (HH is too short and I also have to swap days due to work schedule)

I have not told DH or DD my plans. DH will not be thrilled and if I had told him before hand, he probably would have said no. Not a big Disney fan. However I did tell him that I am starting a marathon training schedule tomorrow. He didn't ask which marathon so I didn't tell:blush: Since we are still trying to conceive I am just going to go ahead with training but will not be booking flights until Nov. Probably won't mention the trip to DH until then either (I know, horrible)

I should have enough points to fly SW free for DH and I so I am really thinking of making it an adults only weekend. We would not be going to any parks, get chilling out at the resort and eating at some great TS places. Not sure how DD will feel being left home. I have a feeling she will shed some tears about it, but Dh and i haven't been away together for more than one night in probably 6 years?

Anyway.. sorry for the long post. Just a bit nervous about what I kind of jumped into. The thought of turning around at the end of a half marathon and doing it all over again is a bit terrifying.:scared1:

We are leaving the kids at home this time too! First adult only trip to Disney. We will do some parks though. Kids didn't seem to mind when we told them, DD10, DS7. We'll see what happens when we actually go to leave though.

Are there any injury-specific threads here? I've struggled with trochanteric bursitis for 2 weeks now because I stupidly tackled a new run with steep hills with no proper warmup. First I stopped running but continued cross-training. I tried to run again after a week and the pain came back worse. I've since switched to total rest. I've tried NSAIDs, ice, heat, stretching, and foam rolling with little success. Improvement seems to be happening SO slowly. Any words of wisdom? Do I need to wait for the pain to disappear completely before I can go back to training? I'm getting frustrated :(

Have you gone to see a sports physician (oh well with that specific diagnosis I'm guessing yes)? Do you have a PT?

Do you have a knowledgeable and gentle chiropractor who might be able to help?

My wife has this. It got so bad a few months ago that she had to get steroid injections in both hips. That took care of the problem, thought the pain got worse for a few days before it started getting better. She has minor flareups every once in a while. We live in a very hilly area, so her body is used to that type of running, but it still presents problems.

My advice based on my wife's experiences - if you have not had the shots yet, seriously consider them. Then ice and rest for a few weeks, then ease back into running.

I started a thread on here for hip bursitis,a few months ago. I had to go to a month of PT and completely stopped any exercise using my legs for a month. I took an anti inflammatory instead of the shots. It pained me to do it,but now,as long as I do my stretches and strengthening exercises daily along with rolling,I am running pain free.

I ran princess half along with a 15K two weeks after that in bad pain...the pain started in Dec. so yours might not be as bad. Also, mine was on both sides.

Can anyone point me in the direction of any good foam roller/stick "rules" or technique resources?

I've been having problems with knots in the inner side of my left calf, and stretching is not getting rid of them. I picked up a stick to try working it out and it hurt like heck (with minimal pressure and just a couple minutes of rolling) and then I was limping for the rest of the day, yesterday. It sounds like this is normal? It was much better today (no pain) but the knot is still there, but it is better than it was yesterday before the torture session.

Also, I'm running the Dopey this year and i'm assuming I should be using the stick between races? I have 5 months to work out my technique, obviously, but just making sure my assumption is correct.

I've never had calf problems before now, but I'm assuming the problem is related to doing lots of interval runs recently, due to a bit of a Zombies, Run! (it's a fitness app where you have to run from hoards of zombies 3-4 times during a 30 minute run) addiction that I've developed. :rolleyes2 :rotfl2:

Visiting the midwest, 57 degrees this morning was like running with turbos.... +30 sec/mi faster with same HR :cool1:

It's a self-diagnosis but it was confirmed by my running partner who is a NP so I'm fairly positive it's correct. I haven't seen a Dr. yet, I was hoping I could heal on my own but I'm breaking down and calling to make an appt tomorrow.

Thanks for the advice. I'm glad the shots worked for her!

Ouch! It sounds like you went through a lot of pain, good to hear that everything resolved itself. I will try to find the old thread, thanks!

Ummm I might have to get that app lol.

I ordered my foam roller on Amazon, it's from Gaiam and comes with a DVD. I haven't watched the DVD yet but I'm sure it helps. They taught me how to use it at PT and its really hard for me to describe but I bet if you googled it you could find some videos on YouTube.

Everyone needs to get this app. Seriously. And I'm not just saying that because I'm hoping that the developer will make boat loads of money so that they can afford to pay their voice actors for season 3.... :lmao: The writing and voice acting is SO GOOD and it's a great motivator to run. And you only look slightly crazy when you are sprinting like there are 40 zombies on your tail.... or when you burst into an ugly cry or random laughter during a particularly emotional or hilarious "mission". :D

I think I mostly have the technique down, but I can't find much on the actual "recommended usages" of the thing. It felt like I was doing damage when I used it on the knot on Saturday and it hurt like heck, and then I was limping for the rest of the day. But it was fine (seriously, I went to bed limping and woke up with no pain at all) the next, so I'm assuming that was fine and how it's supposed to work?

It hurts like hell when I use it on my IT bands. Like I want to cry. I've just started using it and I was forewarned it would hurt but that eventually it would get better lol.

What happens if you cannot make it to the expo to pick up your race bib? Are there any alternatives or do you have to pick it up at the expo?

:confused3

You will need to sign a waiver and have someone else pick up your race packet from the expo.

Is there a limit to how many a person can pick up? If my dad is the first one there can he pick up for my mom, sister and I along with his packet? And is there packet pickup for the kids races?

I don't know about the kids races. We've picked up for 2 other people. I don't think there would be a limit especially if in the same family.

Thanks for the info. This is my first time running the Disney marathon (or any marathon for that matter). Obviously, I did not think at all when I booked the flights. We were scheduled to arrive in Orlando at 2:22pm on Saturday, January 11th. Then I started thinking...."What happens if our flight is delayed due to weather?" We are flying out of Boston in January. I could do all this training and miss the best part, the actual race, because of my poor planning. Then I just noticed last night that the expo is only open until 4pm on Saturday. There is a very good chance that I may not be able to get there before 4pm even if the flight arrives on time.

So....this morning I called Jet Blue and changed our flights. We are now scheduled to arrive around noon on Friday, January 10th. :thumbsup2

So much for our great deal on airfare after the change fees. Oh well, it had to be done. Now I just have to book another night at DisneyWorld.

Well, you sold me on giving the app a try. It sounds like a blast. I downloaded it yesterday and planned to give it a try this morning, but it was pouring rain when I got up to run. Hoping this afternoon will be clear enough that I can get a run in after work. I'm even more anxious to get in my run just so I can try out Zombies, RUN!

Hello,

While dissaponted not to be doing the half this year, I am happy to do the inaugural 10K with my sister :cheer2:

Curiosly waiting on information as to what time to go to corrals for the 10K and what the 6.2 mile course will be like? I imagine part of it on the boardwalk area?

Irregardless still excited and planning out our outfits. :dance3:
