OFFICIAL 2014 WDW Marathon Countdown: WE DID IT! Congrats everyone!

Delta. My mom gave me Skymiles for my birthday. They use less the earlier you make reservations It also reminds me I'm committed. This will be my 1st full marathon

Awesome! I'll book as soon as I can, when the cheapest airlines for me start offering those dates. I'm coming from the Philadelphia area. I like AirTran or SouthWest. Also looking at Frontier out of Trenton this year. It will be my first Marathon too

Unless the policy has been updated recently, the blacklisting is not for life. Last time I asked, it was for a few years.

Still, uh, I don’t think that’s a great excuse for rule breaking or advocating it on the boards.

I still need to book a hotel room for marathon weekend. Where is the best place to book for price? Thanks!

I'm in. Signed up for my first runDisney event and my first half marathon. I'm running the 5K and the half marathon. So excited.

Already started my training (getting the early start) and have run an 8K and 10K.

Yay for the early start :thumbsup2. Me, too. This will be my first marathon. The Galloway 29-week program doesn't show up on the calendar until the beginning of July, but I started the day I signed up and I just keep doing Galloway Week One over and over to build a base ;). Obviously with the 8K and the 10K you are way ahead of me!

I'm using Hal Higdon's training plan and it doesn't start till the end of June. Right now I just do shorter maintenance runs three days a week and cross train 2 days to keep my fitness base.

I booked my ticket the weekend after I registered! I used Alaska airmiles to book, though I believe they are Delta-operated flights. You are right that the earlier you book, the less miles it takes. I was actually only doing some research to see what options I had, but I had never seen flights available for so few miles, so I jumped on it.

Plus, I agree, there is the extra commitment factor. Yes, I paid $$$ to even register for the race, which is generally enough motivation to keep me running, but I'm towards the end of training for my first marathon right now, and during my miserable 18 miler last weekend, the thought, "Screw all these dumb races! I can quit if I want to!" definitely ran through my head at least once. Of course, once I was done, I backed away from the ledge and calmed down, but still.

I'm such a brat I'd never let anyone run under my name. No way!

The 5K wouldn't bother me too much because it's not a timed event, but I can't imagine "unofficially" transferring bibs for a timed event - I want results under my name to be MINE. That's also why I can't imagine taking over a bib and running to give someone else my results. I know it doesn't really matter with my speed (does anyone want my 6 hour marathon??? lol), but it's the principle.

I posted this in the Dopey thread and i guess no one knew. Maybe no one does but thought I would try here just in case. I was just reading an article that said runDisney has in the past had a small table for race day bib pick up. Anyone seen or heard of this? Apparently they don't advertise it. I don't remember seeing it at the 2013 marathon weekend but I wasn't really looking. Would be nice for the 5k morning since I could get into Orlando later and skip the expo on Wednesday. Thanks for any help.

Hi. New here and new to running. I'd been trying to be healthier in general when my DD took up running early this year. DH is a runner - mostly 5K's. So, DD hatched a plan :stir: (I think just to get the trip to Disney she's been working on for a couple of years that we've been unable to do) - and decided that she and her dad needed to run in Marathon weekend! He fell for it :rolleyes2 - and in an effort to not be left out I told him to sign me up for the 5K. Well, she wanted to do all 4 races - he didn't - so by the time he gave in and went online to register the 5K and 10K were full :scared1: - so they signed up to run both the half and full marathon and I said "just sign me up for the half marathon". What was I THINKING????

So now I'm using the Jeff Galloway 5K app - then progressing to the 10K and might walk/run a 10K in Sept when I hit the end of that - and then on to the 1/2 marathon! I really like the run/walk approach - can't ever see myself without the walk breaks - but I hope to get where I'm running more than walking. I figure my pace doesn't really need to get a whole lot faster if I can just improve the ratio of running to walking.

I'm totally unaware of what I'm up against...probably better that way or I'd be scared and start convincing myself I can't do it. But if I have a chance - Disney will be it - can't think of anywhere that would be more motivating to achieve such an accomplishment. And with my DH and DD doing their first big runs too! So I'll be checking in for all the good advice everyone has.

Secretly I'm very excited and proud of my progress thus far!

I've heard others speak of this, but can't confirm with any certainty.

Exactly! And you may even find that more running does NOT equate to a faster pace; many of us run-walkers have sampled any number of interval ratios, only to find that dropping the run portions results in a faster average pace. You have lots of time to tinker and find your happy pace :thumbsup2

I've noticed them at most of the 5K's. Never at a larger race. They only have had bibs that I've seen.

Doubtful. It was a really big deal that they had race-day pick-up in 2010 scheduled last minute for families stuck in storms.

Welcome! You're going to get bit by the running bug!

Yes, Disney races are very inspiring and a lot of fun! Congrats on your progress so far & best wishes for more magical miles!

Congratulations on discovering running! Your running experience sounds a lot like mine before my first half marathon at WDW in 2012. I'd never run any race when I signed up, but I followed the Galloway training plan for the specific race. By the time the half marathon day came, I was completely prepared and had a great time. You will too! :yay:

Whew - thank you - good to know! :cool1:

Thank you!

Welcome to the boards and to running! Its the best kind of addiction.

Thank you! Yes - DH is hoping I catch the fever - I keep telling him I'm running ONE race - but DD already has planted the seed for the coast to coast medal! :stir:

yes - this week I went from the 30 sec walk/30 sec run to 1 min walk/1 min run not at all sure I could maintain it for long - and it felt pretty good. Now, granted, I was moving slow. But I'm working on a treadmill and I wonder how much slower my walk would get if I was not on the treadmill. That's why I'm thinking a 10 K in Sept would be a great idea - kind of see where I'm really at. I'm hoping to get up to a higher run to walk ratio, but need to keep reminding myself I've only been in it 4-5 weeks (from an entirely no running start) and have another 7+ months to work on it so I need to not overdo it and end up with nagging problems that won't go away. That I'm already in the rehlm of being able to finish within the alloted time if I can just maintain for that long, so I don't need to push too much. Finishing is the goal - no time worries here (other than being so slow I get picked up).
