Official 2014 Tinker Bell Half Marathon

Hello this is Carla.
I attempted the Princess 1/2 @wdw in February.
I was caught by balloon gals right at the Magic Kingdom.
True let down.
Training now with Galloway Method.
Training smarter.
I dream of crossing the finish line.
I want this.
Is there a meet up planned? Before or after?
Does anyone know of an FB page?
I am trying to comb through all these posts.
I hear I should be training for hills????
Any other tips?
Thanks, Best wishes to all.
Hope your training is going well.

Even more of a reason to go after it!!! Training on hills will help you go faster on the flats. Focus your mind and your feet will follow. Remember 90% of this is mental. Everytime at mile 10 I have to tell my brain to shut up....

DIG DEEP!!!!!

It's that crazy stretch between 9-11 miles where I often question my sanity. I hear my voice say "and this is supposed to be fun?" And I realize I probably need fuel and it gets better.

I start to get really nervous around mile 12. I've seen a couple people cramp up, fall and really hurt themselves. I feel so bad for them since they are almost done. So I am always very cautious about being careful since I'm almost finished.

For me it's a mental game even right at miles one.....it's just one step after another and pretty soon the miles are adding up.

Best of luck, Carla! It sounds like you are on the right track and I'm sure you will get it this time :) I would also love to meet with some of the other runners... Can't wait to hear if there is a meet up.

On another note, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get into one of the Disney hotels? I booked at the Motel 6 Anaheim main gate but I am now having second thoughts. I am going to be solo and have also never been to Disneyland, so I am not sure that staying off-site is my best bet. Does anyone have any opinions on that or on how to get into a different hotel?

I booked my onsite hotel (paradise pier) thru GetTravel.

Totally true. For me its also between miles 9-11 that I decide running a half marathon was a horrible idea and I never want to do it again. And I too take more fuel and feel better about a mile later.

To combat this I'm going to do two things differntly my next half which is in a week! I'm going to fuel more frequently, in smaller amounts. I like the honey stinger chews so I'm going to eat 3 of them every 30 minutes. It worked on my long runs so hopefully it will work on race day. Im also just accepting the fact that after mile 9, my legs will hurt, I will be tired. There is nothing I can do to change that. I just have to embrace it, focus on my goal and push harder.

Carla - You can do it! For Tink I wouldn't worry about training on hills because there really aren't any. Of course hills are always great to help increase your speed just in general but dont feel liek you have to do hill trainig for Tink.

I also booked Paradise Pier through Get Travel just a couple weeks ago. I'd guess they still have rooms. Give them a try!

That being said I dont think you NEED to stay onsite at DL. We never do. But the idea of walking out of the hotel and being right at the corrals is very inticing!

I was registered for the Tinkerbell last year, but, in November had 2 stress fractures in my foot. Dr. told me January 2nd that I couldn't even walk it. I felt so bad and even worse the day of the race. So, I registered for the 2014 Tinkerbell 1/2 Marathon.

This will be my 2nd 1/2 Marathon. My first 1/2 Marathon was in 2006 in WDW.

Doing the Marathon for Mortals training program to walk/run it. I just will not be doing the 7 mile long run.

My DD and I are staying at the Candy Cane Inn. I just purchased the airfare on SW with the sale.

I am so excited!

Please forgive me as I am sure this has been addressed before. I am looking for advise. I am flying back home the same day as the 1/2 marathon, (I am planning on finishing in about 3 hours) not having been to Disneyland (or ca for the matter) was wondering if anybody had any ideas as to weather or not a 1:30 flight time would be OK?
Thanks for all of your help

It really depends on which airport. SNA you should be okay - LAX is pushing it. Traffic shouldn't be too bad once you hit the freeway, but, getting to the freeway is going to be problematic. After the race, I would plan on at least an hour to get to your hotel, shower, change, grab something to eat and then get to your airport transportation.

Welcome! So sorry to hear about your injury last year! That sucks! Fingers crossed you (and everyone else!) stay injury free this year!

Depends on where you are staying as well as what airport you are flying out from. Personally I think that's pushing it a bit. If you are flying from Orange County then much more doable. If you are guessing you will be finishing around 3 hours then it will be one of the last corrals so you might not start until closer tot 5:30.

For a 1:30 flight you should be okay. Shuttle pick-up times for that time frame will probably be between 10 & 11, if that helps at all. I was playing w/ my flight home on Sunday and the shuttles too ~ trying to figure out times and whether the roads/traffic around the hotels would be okay for the shuttles to get through. I think my flight is at 2 and they had me getting picked up between 11:15 and 11:45.

I've seen the term "fuel" used regularly and was wondering what everyone uses? I've seen mention of glucose packs, is this the same thing? Stressing over not having enough energy along the route. Also, are hydration belts a needed thing for the half?

Start playing around now on your long runs to see what works for you. I use to use the GU gels during my long runs and races but they actually gave me tummy issues. I tried the Cliff shot blocks and had issues as well during my runs. Right now I'm using 3 shot blocks w/caffeine before I start and then eating a few honey stinger chews every 30 minutes. You have plenty of time to play around with fuel and find what you like!

As for the hydration belt, I personally dont like them that much and I wont use my hand held for 13.1 miles so I rely on the aid stations. I know this is a bad idea becuase its always possible that an aid station will be out of water. I guess its a risk I choose to take. I haven't had any problems yet but I've only done 2 halfs so far.

I've never used hydration belts. I dont like the sloshing around feeling in the bottle....little things set me off like that. Or my headphone cord banging on my neck. I know weird....

As far as fueling. I use sports beans around mile 5 and take a couple every 20 minutes or so. I also use 1 GU packet around 7. I would just play around with it and see what works for you best. There are many options out there. Also when I start doing longer runs 6plus miles I adjust my training run to go by my house half way thru the run, I leave a water bottle down at the end of the driveway, take a chug of water and keep going. I also have the option of running inside real quick to use the bathroom if needed, don't stop your watch though since it won't stop during raceday.... Hope that helps!

I'll echo what everyone else has been saying: you kind of have to play around with your fuel and figure out what works best for you.

I always run with a hydration belt, during races and training alike, even if it's a short run. I like knowing I have my own nuun-enhanced water accessible. I have an iFitness belt that I love - it sits snug on my hips and I don't find that the water sloshes at all. Plus, then I always have somewhere to carry my phone.

For fuel, I eat a pack of honey stinger chews before the race, then starting at mile 4, start eating energy gels every 3-4 miles. My favorite gel of all time is the chocolate cherry flavor made by Clif, but I'll also eat other Clif flavors for variety, as well as the gu brand ones. Both work fine for me. I just picked up a honey stinger brand one the other day to try, as well, since I like their chews so much.
