Official 2014 Tinker Bell Half Marathon

For those of you that have Garmins, which model do you have?

I was looking at the Garmin Forerunner 10, mainly becuase of the price. I just want a GPS feature as I dont run with my iphone. Right now its just my $14.99 timex and I figure out my mileage by doing routes on mapmyrun.

I have the 610 and I love it. However it has a lot of features you probably wont need. I am hoping to start heart rate training with it soon, and more complex workouts.

Patty, I just read your race report. You are AWESOME! With that wind and the hill. Big Congrats on your PR. I want to do the RnR half now! :rotfl:

Another question about GPS watches....
Heart rate monitor: Yes or no?
Why would I want one? Is it really that beneficial?

Awww... thanks Jo! It was a great race! Tough, but now I'm not sweating the Disney ones. At. All.

I have the 10 and the 110.

The 10--- what I didnt like was the instant speed it showed me. What I mean is it shows me how fast I was walking or running at that time. What I wanted was something showing me over all pace for the mile I was on.

I felt I was always looking at the 10 and trying to figure out the lap pace. It does show you that, but not until you hit your mile. I wanted to know when I was at .85 that I had to turn it on to get my pace where I wanted for the average to give an example.

The other issue with the 10 is that it only has a 5 hr battery life. *if*- and thats a HUGE if- I ever do a full, I'll need a lot longer. :rotfl2::rotfl2:

So I bought the 110 on Ebay. For about the same price.

110 had the HR monitor too. I like this for pacing help- if I am pushing into the 180s on my HR I know to back off a little. Some people can feel that naturally, but I needed to see the numbers. IT helped even my pace out.

110 shows me the average lap pace, so when I'm doing my intervals, I still get the overall pace for the entire mile so far- not just what I am doing when I am walking. Does that make sense? So if I hit that .85 and I'm a little slow, I know to turn it on to get to the 1 mile mark at the pace I want.

110 also has an 8 hr battery life. just in case. :thumbsup2

It is super simple like the 10- just has a few more things I liked. Calories, pace, mileage, overall time, and HR are tracked

HTH!

Patty -loved the rest of your update. Hills?!!! No thanks! I think I'll sit that one out.

When we register in July, is that when you sign up to volunteer? I'm thinking about volunteering for the 5K.

How far is Doentown Disney from Stovalls? Can we walk there?

Is the Expo enough to do by itself on Friday?

Hey....you stole my itinerary!! Expect I'm doing a lot of site seeing since I've never been to Cali. Hermosa Beach on Thursday, Hollywood/EXPO on Friday, 5K on Saturday with a little outlet mall shopping, Half on Sunday with Disneyland, and California Adventure on Monday. Flying back Tuesday early morning. Maybe I will see u since we're staying at the same hotel and all!

Sounds like you're going to pack a lot into your weekend. I have been to Hollywood several times, my daughter lives there. She's going to come up on race day and then go to the park with us.

Hopefully I will see you at Stovalls too.

Thanks Patty! Thats exactly what I was looking for. Those were actually the two models I had been reading up on. I think based on what you said I'll head over to ebay, spend $40 more and get the heart rate monitor. Do I need it? No. But I think it would be benficial.

So I went for my quick 2.5 mile run tonight after work AND despite the fact that it was windy (I hate wind) and despite the fact that I'm fighting a tiny cold (I'm a baby) I ran my fastest time yet! I averaged 11:30 pace! Normally I'm 12:30 or 12:00 is usually my best. Super stoked. No idea how that happened.
I ate an egg white about an hour before I ran. Think that helped? I thought you were supposed to eat carbs just before a run but isnt an egg pretty much protein?

Heart rate is beneficial for interval training, and if you're training for speed. I am going this route because in 2014 I'd like to qualify for boston.

WOOO HOOO! Nice job on the speed! Protein is good for runners- no idea if it helped the run, but it cant hurt it either! lol

I think the 10 and 110 are both the easiest to use garmins out there. simple but effective. Happy shopping!

Kim - Puppy is a mutt! Mommy dog was rescued from a shelter 12 hours after giving birth to her pups. She's a weimaranar/pit/lab mix and they dont know who daddy was. We werent planning on getting a baby but I think it was kinda meant to be. We're all in love with the little guy we picked out.

She sounds adorable! That sounds like a fun mix to play with!

I am excited to let you all know I picked my "costume" for Tinker. Keep an eye out for the runner sporting the "Arthritis National Research Foundation" Singlet! I have dedicated my next year of training and racing towards a cure for arthritis. I will run as a Warrior with this disease and for this disease! I am super excited to finally be running for the funding and setting an example for people with my disease!

That's awesome! Do you know what color the singlet is?

They do have a volunteer sign up, but I think it comes out a little while after reg opens. If you keep an eye out on the site, they usually announce it.

DTD is about 1/3 of a mile from Stovall's. You just walk up DL Drive and after Paradise Pier, there is a walkway on the left that you turn down and then turn right and you come out on the back end by AMC Theaters and the DL Hotel where the expo is.

The expo is totally doable on Friday. You could get through everything in 2 hours, more or less depending on how much time you spend at each vendor. This year I went when it opened and the line for bib pickup was really long, so I went to the expo part 1st and b/c everyone was downstairs I got through it in 45 mins or so, but I didn't stop everywhere. It worked out perfectly, b/c when I went downstairs for bib pickup, I breezed right through b/c everyone was upstairs.

If the expo is only going to take about two hours what else should we do that day? I want to do Downtown Disney on Saturday so I'm not sure what else to do on Friday if the expo is so short.

If you're not going into the parks, you could see a movie at AMC theaters in DTD. It's across from the DLH where DTD starts. There's a day spa at the Grand if you want to do a day of pampering pre-race. You could have a relaxing lunch or dinner and take your time people watching, that's fun, especially at the Uva Bar right in the middle. Tons of people going back and forth. If you're up for walking a little further, on the other side of the parks off Harbor and Disney Way is the Garden Walk. They have shops and restaurants in there. Or, relax at the pool at the hotel. The weather has been nice the past 2 years.

anyone think that i would be totally crazy to try to do the Tinkerbell following the WDW Marathon?

Want my C2C!!!

probably crazy.....:banana::banana:

I got my C2C by doing Goofy then Tink and I LOVED IT! I loved walking around the expo with my Goofy tech shirt on and the C2C wristband. And I wasn't the only one. I felt like a member of a pretty exclusive club.

After the race I was waiting in line for our finishers picture and the woman in front of me noticed I had the Tink and C2C medal on and asked me about it. I told her I had done Goofy the weekend before. She just shook her head and said, You're a badass. And I'll tell ya, I felt like one!! :woohoo:

I bought my medal hanger from SportHooks at one of the expos and it's in the shape of Cinderella's castle. I have all five medals hanging on there and they look spectacular. I have it on a wall in our living room and I've found myself sitting it on the couch staring at it.

Goofierunner - I'd love to see a picture of this!

No, not crazy. I did the 1/2 both weekends. Think of it as your week w/ disney. :goodvibes

Does anyone think they will offer a double dare like the Dumbo for the Tink?

I would love it if they did, but don't think so. I'd like think yes, b/c they saw how popular DDD reg was, but on the otherhand, WDW only has the Goofy/now Dopey challege for 1 race and now DL has 1 race w/ it; all the other races just have the 5k / ½ option. You could always do the unofficial version and do both the 5k and ½. I do!

Well phooey!

Has anyone done the Wine and Dine? I'm thinking I might like to do that one next year after the Tink to get my C2C. It is at night though. I have never run that late on a long. Is it something you need to practice so your body adjusts and doesn't rebel because it thinks you should be in bed?
