Official 2014 Sochi Olympic Winter Games thread!

They really shouldn't air figure skating this close to bedtime. I'm struggling to stay awake :(

What a stellar night! Congrats to team Russia on the figure skating win. I must admit, the little Russian girl was so much better tonight than in her short program. A little heavy on the theatrics but really well done and enjoyable to watch! The whole team really pulled together on this and it showed.

My head is still ringing from that fall Sarca took in the women's slopeside. I hope they took her straight off the hill and to the ER for a CAT scan. Her helmet was complete toast (as it should be after an impact like that. It did it's job!)...the sound it made hitting the snow was painful!

Congrats to Jaimie Anderson on the gold in slopeside. I really love that the women snowboarders seem to be, for the most part, supportive of one another. I suppose they're like a fraternity/sorority in the sense of camaraderie. do any of them train together? I know they of course compete together. Lots of hugs at the bottom of the hill.

Quick question for anyone who knows...when it comes to figure skating, are the gouges and tracks left in the ice by all the previous skaters a hindrance? I feel like it would be tricky skating over the tracks or possible getting your blade caught in a groove. I know they zamboni the ice after every group of skaters, but is it preferable to skate on clean ice or not?

I've never given it any thought, but I would imagine any major ruts would have to be a distraction. I know in hockey, the puck really bounces around late in the periods.

I really enjoyed the skating today as well. Congrats Team Russia. Really looking forward to the individual events.

Looks like I get to enjoy the curling; whilst you're all sleeping. That could be as exciting as watching grass grow....but I'm happy to give it a go.

OOH. Just realised the Ladies downhill combined is on as well.

I do not know or have any experience. However, when our Canadian fell one of the commentators mentioned the grooves in the ice as a possible reason. Apparently the way she fell is uncommon.

Watching the Men's Ski Jumping right now. Anyone else interested in this sport?

I can't imagine pointing the skis straight down the hill; probably stuck in the track groves with no where to go and then vaulting off the edge to float 130 meters down the hill. Eddie the Eagle I am NOT!

Curling is great...give is a shot you might enjoy it. Short track is on right now which I love.

Neither have I. :rolleyes1

(Brittney Cox finished a rather credible 5th in the moguls behind the sister act; Torah Bright finished 7th in the snowboard slopestyle).

There is an Aussie in front in the combined skiing right now!! :thumbsup2

We are top of the medal standings!! :thumbsup2

Norway is on top of the medal standings (which means the total medal count) right now...did you mean Canada is on top of the medal podium in that event?

Once again, NBC spoiled their own prime time showing by announcing the results not just during the Today Show, but it was the very first words out of the anchor's mouth when the show opened. No warning....no "turn away now if you don't want to be spoiled".

Jerks. I wish the Olympics would give their coverage to another network.

Just saw Sarka's crash in the Slope Style. Amazing how she was able to finish off going to down the hill afterwards.

She should have been taken off immediately by medical personnel, not allowed to finish. It was obvious she was unconscious after the hit.

Norway has the highest medal count but Canada has more gold & silver so is considered top...I was surprised they did it this way too.

Norway has the most medals but since Canada has more gold & silver it is considered #1...I was surprised they did it this way too.

No, they aren't. It doesn't work that way. But it's still early in the games...plenty of time for them to catch up!

Actually they are right, on the medal board Canada is on top because of the higher amount of silver medals.

Fascinating.... AFAIC, Norway still leads. If one were to assign each medal a point value (like they do in with the placings in team figure skating for example) Norway still leads by a wide margin.

Another country just passed both Canada and Norway in both categories. :)

I do agree that total metal count should come first though.

We were only on top for a couple of hours then the Dutch speed skaters hit the ice! Oh well it was good while it lasted...hopefully the moguls will go our way! :goodvibes
