Official 2014 Dopey Challenge Thread!

Odd, considering 7:00 is the max (16:00/mile). Probably does a major disservice to people who fall in the 5-6 hour range (12:00 - 14:00) if they don't submit a proof of time and end up with the "walkers" in the last corral.

I should have said corral placement proof of time. I misspoke.

Proof of Time

If you believe you will finish the Half Marathon in less than 3 hours and 15 minutes and/or the Marathon in 6 hours and 30 minutes or less, proof of time is required for start corral placement.
Please reference the Race Pacing Chart at www.rundisney.com.

That's a much more lenient policy than I thought they had.

Isn't it the opposite of lenient? Used to be you could claim to do a 5:00 marathon and get moved into a better corral without proof of time. Now you have to submit proof for anything better than 6:30. That seems a ton more strict.

I thought the policy was you had to submit proof of anything faster than 5:00

Far more strict.

I honestly don't think the corral change is a huge deal, other than you have to go with the time you register with.

First time doing a disney run for wife and I, and we were so excited for the Goofy Challenge until they announced the Dopey Challenge and we knew we had to do that instead. Does anyone know what time the registration opens on the 9th? We're terrified it's going to sell out instantly and we won't get in!!!

Yeah this is the big change:
is not provided by November 1, 2013 you will be placed in the last start corral. If your proof of time data is incomplete or cannot be verified, you will be placed in the last start corral. To provide or update your proof of time, you must email all proof of time data requested above to disneysports@trackshack.com. No corral changes will be made after November 1, 2013.

You will no longer be able to bring proof of time to the Runner Relations booth during the Expo and have your start corral placement changed.

No corral changes at the expo is a big deal.

Yup, this is a big deal for me. It says after January 2012 and prior to November 1, 2013. In that time period I had a baby and have no proof of time. I was counting on my Wine and Dine time for my corral change at the expo, but that falls after the deadline. I'm not sure if I can find any local races before then that I can qualify with.

That was apparently the old policy. New is proof required for better than 6:30. So it's more strict. More people will have to submit proof of time.

I think it's a great change and should help to reduce the overcrowding and congestion on the course.

I'm guessing the change will be better for the more serious runners, by moving more people to the last corral and potentially resulting in less congestion for the earlier corrals. But there will probably be a lot of unintended consequences like J3nn78's experience.

I'm going to email them. Maybe they will consider changing the date to submit until after W&D? Can't hurt to ask.

Other than the timing of it, I don't see it as a bad change.

I just called runDisney and they said visa card holders are on the list for early registration along with DVC and AP. :cool1: She said the emails will be going out tomorrow and registration opens at noon. I know information can be unreliable at times, but I really hope that this is correct.

Thank you DrummerWife. I will watch for the email.

Is the requirement for a 10K or longer race? Where do you live that you can't find a 10K between now and Nov. 1? Maybe because I live in a runner-friendly town (certainly more 5Ks than 10ks), but there are dozens of races I can choose from. :confused3

I'm going to have to agree with you. (and I don't say this as a fast person--I tanked at Goofy this year) I seriously believe that there are people who sign up for some of these distances without really knowing what they are in for and get in over their heads. I fear this will happen with the new Dopey for sure...48.6 miles is not a trifle.
