Official 2014 Dopey Challenge Thread!

I joined a local running program - basically, they are doing a Fast Track (train to a 5k, programs anywhere from beginning to run to trying to race and place). Last night was 1000m repeats, which I followed with 6 miles today (and 4.5 of them at above any race pace past a 10k).

I'm sore, tired, and not looking forward to the 10-12 miles that I need to run tomorrow. I know it will get easier, once I get used to ramped up mileage and speedwork, but that's not much consolation to the here and now. It will all be worth it when I pass by the gospel choir at mile 48.4 or so.

I clearly am a mere mortal among all the dopey gods. Between here and the fb pages everyone seems to be running much higher mileage than I am. I am hitting right at 20 miles per week with a long run of 8 this week. I think I am right on track for both Galloway or Higdon Dopey plans. I wouldn't be too hard on yourself or push your long run if your legs are still fatigued from speed work. Slow and steady to avoid injury is my motto. Just keep swimming...

Hope everyone's training is going well. I'm in the middle of my first 50+ mile week of this training period, and wow, what a mental difference there is between 30 miles and 50. Still, I'm looking forward to Dopey. 5 more months!

Oh, I'm not planning on pushing tomorrow, just slogging through it.

This week is intentionally hard, next week should be easier. But I'm only at 30 or so mile per week right now. I probably will not break 40 until September or thereabouts.

I'm just complaining a little - I probably should have taken a break today, but yeah. . . .. that's not going to happen.

Well, I had planned on taking this year off after running Disney races since 2011 - three halfs (2011 (WDW and DL) and 2012 (WDW)), one full (2013), TT 10K, and a Coast-to-Coast. Last year's TT 10K and full marathon took a lot out of me due to the heat and humidity.

That having been said, the fire is burning again, and just when I thought I was out Mickey has pulled me back in. :) I so want to join you guys and girls in 2014. It looks like the Goofy is my only option now. I would love to get a Dopey bib if at all possible? Anyone know of the best way to do this at this point? I'm definitely playing catch up - this thread is awesome. :wave2:

I'll be seeing you at the finish line. Far better to be trained properly than overtrained.

I am following Galloway's Dopey plan, so this week was two short runs and a 7 miler. I have done a 5.5 mile run, 4.5 mile run, and will do 4 this weekend during a duathlon. Right now, my training has me doing about 60 miles in August total, I am not doing 50 in a week! aApplause to anyone doing that much mileage in a week right now, I am in awe!

Welcome, fellow mortal! I'm not a super runner for life yet, but I'll be following the training and ramping up my miles along with you!

I am not doing anything super right now. I haven't done really anything all summer either.

I am beginning now with 8 miles, jogging/walking and sprinting up hills
then do 13 miles on Sundays (cannot this Sunday though).

I will build from there. I have a few half marathons before the Dopey in January...and one full in Oct.

Did the Galloway plan already start for marathon weekend? I haven't done his because I'd rather do more shorter runs during the week than so many really long runs. I remember my training plan for the marathon not starting until September, right after I did Disneyland so if you're already doing one I'd think you were ahead of schedule!

And I feel like I already know what it means to run on tired legs... My mileage is up thanks to training for an October full and I picked Higdon's intermediate plan because it puts a shorter mid-distance run right before the long run. Train now and if anything gets hurt I have November/December to get it back up and working for Dopey. I hope.

The Dopey plan started at the beginning of July (Jeff Galloway's anyway) :) This weekend's long run is a 7 miler.

:thumbsup2 I know from doing the Goofy in previous years that I can only handle 3-4 runs a week, and two of those need to be pretty low mileage. More than that, and I'm going to be overtrained and injured before I hit the start line.

I'm following Galloway, but I think my longest run is going to be 22-23 miles. I am not running 26 miles until I hit Epcot! ;)

Joining the ranks of the "foolish mortals". :rotfl:

Anyone starting to plan what their days during Dopey will be like?

Because I live in Orlando, I decided that I'm going to run the 5k and 10k and then go home, get cleaned up, then go to work (I'm a weirdo, aren't I? :lmao:). After the 1/2, I'm going to spend the day relaxing and maybe do a little walking with an EARLIER bedtime than last year. After full, will wear all 6 of my medals at once at either Epcot or MK and let those puppies clang loud for all to hear.

Day after the weekend, I am not coming to work. LOL.

And by an earlier bedtime I mean actually go to bed at a decent hour. 2013's Goofy was ridiculous for sleep for me. I went to sleep at 12:30/1 a.m.ish and then was up and out the door at 3 a.m. For the full, I was in bed at 10 p.m., up and out the door at 3 a.m. NOT DOING THAT AGAIN!

Let me clarify (since it won't let me edit) - on the days of the 5k and the 10k, I'll go home, get cleaned up, go to work - I know those are two separate days :)

Implanting on going to the parks after all of the races. Walking is good after a run. We will take it easy though. I have boomed early dinners or late lunches. I will be taking some Tylenol PM at 6pm each night to be sure I sleep well before the races.
Everyone always asks how I could possibly do 48.6 miles and I am always replying that I am more concerned with 4 super early days.

I'm probably going to spend a couple hours in the parks every day. I'm going to try to nap during the day after the 5K and the 10K because I'm going to try to minimize sleep deprivation before the half and full, but I will also need to walk around. I might skip the park after the 10K and just go for a swim at the resort, whether it's warm enough or not. ;) After the half, I'm just going to go to a park for lunch and walk around for a couple hours and then definitely be back at the resort by 5:00 or 6:00 to prep for the full and get to sleep.

When I did the "unofficial Dopey" in 2010, I did go to the park each day - AK after the 5K and MK after the half. It seems to work out pretty well and I wasn't stiff at all before the full. My feet did hurt like heck by the end of the full, and who knows if that would have been better if I had stayed off my feet outside the races, but I doubt it would have made a difference.

We'll be hitting the parks each day, but I'll be taking it easy, while DW and the kids go full-bore. I don't plan on going to a park at all on Sunday - I'll head back, get cleaned up, take a short nap (like 30 minutes), and then head to Downtown Disney instead.

Did not manage to get in the long run yesterday - leaking dishwasher took precedence. Today was hills though, which was nice. I should be able to get in at least an hour run on Sunday, which, while it won't make up for it, won't put me far off my overall schedule and mileage plans. (Really, my main goal for this month is get back up to the 40 mile or so point, and start adding a solid double digit run every week. Things can ramp up from there once the kids are back in school.)

After the half I booked a massage at the hotel. It worked out well for me to have a massage after the half before the full.
After the full? This year I went to MK with my Goofy medal...so perhaps I will
do the same in '14. I wont wear all the medals, just the Dopey...I just want to cross the finish line with nothing sore...aside from muscles.

There will probably be more hotel time than usual, so I'm glad this trip I'm paying the extra and staying at the Polynesian (and I hear the monorail is convenient?). I made breakfast reservations at Kona for after the 10k and Ohana after the full, probably heading to MK and Epcot (definitely doing pre-marathon dinner at Via Napoli again) and then Sunday/Monday will be spent looking for dopey to get a picture!

All I wanted last year was a picture with Mickey and my medal but unfortunately by the time we got to the MK he was gone for the day and we left Monday morning, so this year I'm staying til Tuesday to have a full park day with my medal assuming, of course, I can still walk.
