Official 2014 Disneyland Dumbo Double Dare, Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k Thread!

I'm double posting because I wanted this link to a nice article about avoiding the sweepers to not get lost in the shuffle of my other thoughts.

Sorry okay going off topic here for a second.

What I find really curious about that link is they bring up the Star Wars 5k. And the fact that one is requiring a pace now for a finisher medal? WTH Disney?! Especially after scrounging around on some of the other race pages and seeing that this isn't universal?

Look I get it when people are losing time . But not every slow runner is because of character stops. When I do these 5ks with my Mom my pace drops to a turtle crawl and it ain't got anything to do with photo stops. It has to deal with her age and health issues.

The fastest I've seen her do in a race is about an 18 min/mile click. And that on a really good day that took me by completely surprise for about a mile. No way is she going to be able to do a 16 min/mile it for 3.1 miles.

And this brings up confusion on more than one front. Are they going to just stop handing out finisher medals to people from now on as soon as they hit a certain time after the gun goes off? Because if that's true that a really bad move on their part!

All I can say is someone needs to proof read the darn website or realize that this is a disaster waiting to happen. Their is a reason why the 16 min/mile was never enforced. And medals were handed out no matter when you finished!

As for after the race character lines in the parks, they're probably about on par with what character lines normally are if there isn't a race.

I haven't been at a peak time before (or even on a weekend for that matter!) so I really have no idea what that is! When we were there last all the characters pretty much had lines of less than 5 minutes :goodvibes

I love all the medals except the Stitch 10k. I wish I could switch my 10k run to the 5k, the 5k Stitch is adorable and so is the kids run one. I just think something looks off about the way Stitch looks in the 10k. His hands look too big and I'm not sure what's going on right above his head. I hope this looks cuter in person! I do love that they switched up the D in the half, glad that I won't have 2 of the exact same medal. Oh wait I will have 2 of the exact same medal, this is my 2nd coast to coast. :)

I think my longest wait in line for a character after the 2012 Disneyland 1/2 was 15-20 minutes for Princess Aurora. That line also had two other princesses in it, but since Sleeping Beauty is my favorite Disney movie, I didn't really care who the other two happened to be. In looking at my post race character photos from that year, I also got a picture with Merida (whose line was non-existent), Mickey, Pluto (both in DCA), and managed to find Chip and Dale the next morning before I left. The longest wait by far for all those characters was for the princesses, which I would have skipped had Aurora not been there.

The note that they posted about runDisney listing for the Star Wars 5K being timed and only finishers within that pace get the medallions - I can't even find it on the runDisney website, so I'm honestly not giving any credence to this 'article' at the moment. Unless someone else found it. My internet is slow as can be so I miss stuff sometimes.

And there's no way they can hold medals back from people who don't finish with a particular time. What if someone in corral A decides to walk the entire thing, slowly, and finishes outside of the 16-minute pace but well before the last finisher? They are still there in the mix where they're only handing the medals out - not checking times.

But skimming over the article, a lot of what they were talking about really had to do with the Tinker Bell 10K earlier this year and they didn't even touch base on what actually happened there. Does anyone else remember the big snafu that had actually had a lot of people complaining? It was the hard cut-off they did as you left DCA to finish the run (different than a normal sweep) on the streets that was a first for a lot of people who were used to the leniency of the 5K and even the half where usually once you reach a certain point, you wont get swept.

At least that's what I remember from January.

Just reminded why I don't read articles from Mouse Planet and the like. Things get lost in translation.

Congrats on your second C2C! :) I agree I think since they switched up the DH this year to have a round motif it would have been nice if the 10k was also circular. The rectangular tiki Stitch (why he is out of proportion I'm assuming) would have gone well with the previous years' rectangular D. I also wish I signed up for the 5k! It's so cute! I'm in for the half and am super excited.

Now I just have to focus on getting my intervals to longer running! :)

Out of curiosity, I checked the pacing requirements on the runDisney Star Wars page and it does state that while the 5K isn't timed, all runners must maintain a 16 minute per mile pace to receive a finishers medal. The same language is used on the Disneyland 5K as well.

While I don't know for sure, my guess would be that maintaining 16 minutes per mile means finishing before the person who maintains pace crosses the finish line whether you started in the first corral or the last.

I may just be blind then, but if I recall correctly, they've always phrased it that way. If they were making any real change in the policy I would think they would make a larger announcement about it - similar to what they did when they went about changing the packet pick up policy.

I don't think we have to worry any more than normal about the 5K and certainly not about any of the other events.

Oddly enough, the Avengers page does not contain the same wording. It merely states that all 5K athletes should maintain 16 minutes per mile pace. Both Disneyland and Star Wars state that while the 5K is not timed, runners may be swept. Part of me wonders if it's tied to the fact that both those races have a Challenge component while Avengers does not.

I'm sure I read somewhere that the 5kers had to maintain the 16 min/mile pace too. I've always been under the impression that we would be swept if our pace dropped, even in the 5k. I wouldn't expect any leniency in the 10k.

I found that article quite useful as a first timer, just to know a bit more about what to look out for with the race staff on bikes, flags etc.

I would think that except the Rebel Challenge is a mirror of the Dumbo. It only includes the 10k and the Half. The 5k is not included in the challenge.

I would think maybe it's a new rule for next year. Except I checked for Tink under the website. And it's not listed there. So this is a bit confusing.

Zanzibar (on mobile so can't multi-quote), they've never truly enforced the pacing 5k to my knowledge. I mean I'm sure at some point if you weren't past some point you might be in trouble. But it certainly was a slower than 16 min/mile pace.

That's the reason why my Mom and a couple of people who I know that are slow do to medical reasons were able to complete it without too much concern I mean the only Disney 5k that gets officially timed to my knowledge is the WDW one and that's because they have Dopey runner.

This whole thing seems weird with that 5ks wording.

Wish I was doing the 5k! LILO & Stich are my favorite!

I just canceled a reservation at the Grand Californian for race weekend (8/27 - 9/1). If you were trying to get a room there I don't suppose it would hurt to try your luck again....

The Disneyland 10k will be my first experience with long distance running since high school. I'm very excited but I have a bunch of questions that keep popping in my head (usually while I'm training). I'm hoping to get some help in this thread! Here are my questions:

1. Since I don't have a prior race time to submit, is it 100% certain that I will very the last corral for the 10k? If so, how early should I arrive to get towards the front of the corral? My current pace is about 14:30/15:00 minutes with a mix of running and walking, so I think my pace will be okay but I'm nervous about it because I'm still training to get to the full race distance (Galloway program).

2. Does RunDisney usually post the list of characters on the race course before the race? And, if I'm in the last (or one of the last corrals), how long are the typical waits for character photos? I've heard some people say the lines can be as long as 30 minutes.

3. Are there character photo ops at the finish line/when the race is over? I thought I heard someone mention taking pictures with characters with her medal after the race was over.

4. Can I pick up a race bib for a friend? She will be meeting me there, but might not be able to get to Anaheim until late on Friday.

6. Probably a dumb question, but how do you attach you race bib? Safety pins? Race belt?

7. Water stations - are there usually lines for these or is it something you can grab relatively quickly?

I'll try to help where I can!

1. Since I don't have a prior race time to submit, is it 100% certain that I will very the last corral for the 10k?

My first runDisney race (and first distance/timed race ever) was Tink this year and I was put in the second to last corral so there's hope :) With your pace I'm sure even if you are in the last you should be fine.

I can't help with question 2 as I didn't wait in any character lines, sorry!

3. Are there character photo ops at the finish line/when the race is over? I thought I heard someone mention taking pictures with characters with her medal after the race was over.

Not directly in the finishers area. I think they were referring to wandering the parks and finding characters there (Disneyland has the wonderful advantage that their characters walk around the park willy nilly, in addition to those noted in the specific character locations on the maps, for example I saw Captain Hook wandering around the esplanade around 4 p.m. and Alice and the Mad Hatter & Peter and Wendy often frequent Fantasyland)

4. Can I pick up a race bib for a friend? She will be meeting me there, but might not be able to get to Anaheim until late on Friday.

RunDisney will stop allowing others to pick up packets after this year's Avenger's so you should be fine as long as you/she fills out the Packet Pick Up Authorization form found on rundisney.com :)

Info on the change: http://www.rundisney.com/blog/articles/packet-pick-up-update-03-24-14/

6. Probably a dumb question, but how do you attach you race bib? Safety pins? Race belt?

They supply you with a mini Ziploc baggy with four safety pins when you get your bib which you secure to the front of your shirt. (after filling out your emergency contact info on the back of your bib)

7. Water stations - are there usually lines for these or is it something you can grab relatively quickly?

There is sometimes a pile-up at the beginning of the water station tables but if you continue to run just past those there will be volunteers ready holding cups in both hands for you to easily receive without hassle.:thumbsup2
