Official 2013 Tower of Terror 10 Miler

I am starting to get nervous about running this race.
My goals are not to get sweep to just finish and not get hurt.
Any other non runners worried.
I am hoping to be 20 pounds lighter for the race.
Anyone else doing a costume?

I'm nervous too but we'll be ok. This is my first major race and prior to this year I had never been much of a "runner". I got in shape last year going to boot camp 3 times a week and this year I've been focusing on my running but I still have a long way to go. My goals are just like yours: don't get swept, finish and don't get hurt. I'm running this with my best friend. So far, we haven't decided if we'll do a costume or not.

Started the ToT 10 Miler Time Improvement training plan today and had a great 45 min run. Finished right at 4 miles. Anyone else start their training today?!

I started yesterday; works better with our schedules. :) And my "3 mile" run on Sat will actually be a 5K race. Works for me!

I'm not doing a costume; at least I don't think I am.

Be careful with the weight loss, OK? Careful careful with the nutrition, trust me (and my bonked head from fainting after a bad day of nutrition, hydration, and increasing my run too much). Make sure you're fueling yourself enough, even if it takes a bit longer to lose.

Yep, day one of the next 33 weeks has started. From here its a 4 miler with work this week, ToT, Richmond Half then Disney Weekend in Jan! I'm trying Galloway for the first time to keep injuries away. Little slower than normal but figured with the humidity and first time being active in weeks it was ok. Good luck everyone!

I think the nervousness gets better the further you get into training. As you see your body getting it done, you'll lose some of that "What if I can't?" stuff. Honestly, by the time of the race last year, I knew I could finish, even injured and walking much of it. Hang in there!

No costume here; too hot. I'll probably iron-on stuff to my regular running gear for a "themed" outfit.

Okay, first "official" run of the Galloway plan done! :thumbsup2 It was hovering around 90 and ready to rain at any moment, so HIGH humidity, but cloudy, which helped some. I was hoping for rain, but it never came down. Still, got through 3 miles at a 12:25 pace and didn't pass out. I'll take it!

Happy National Running Day everyone! And it's exactly 4 months til we're running 10 miles in the dark! :woohoo:

Hope everyone on the training plan has started off well! :goodvibes

Wow, exciting!

I ordered a new running skirt from amazon. It's actually a "Happy Girl" from Skirts Sports, selling through amazon, and it's due to be delivered today. It's supposed to be their longest skirt, which would make me happy, because the ones I got from Target *feel* incredibly short, and make me feel like I'm showing my tush to everyone. And the Target skirts have shorts that definitely DO ride up.

And it's blue, so if I like it I can wear my blue top, and then can pretend like I have a Cinderella-ish outfit on. Boom, costume. :rotfl2:

"Dark" sounds sooooo good at this point! Tough I am looking at a run day without blinding, scorching sun tomorrow... because we have a blob of tropical nasty swirling in the Gulf and the rain chance is 100%.

Happy Running Day, all! I'll be doing Pilates. :rotfl:

I thought for me the costume took a lot of pressure off during my first race--it definitely helped me be more excited and less nervous. And especially in Disney, it makes everything a lot more fun!

I am running this race with a few friends. Question is, would you run your own race, at your own pace with a good corral placement OR run with friends but knowing you'll be in the last corral and won't PR????

When I ran the princess I ran with a friend. We started together but eventually I went ahead. I thought i would feel bad but I don't think it's worth all the training to end up holding yourself back but it's definitely a personal decision. My friend didn't mind at all :)

As a total newbie, I'm wondering about this: how many run/walk vs. only run these Disney races?

My background... until a couple of months ago, I hadn't run more than across the street to catch the light, since hating the "endurance run" we had to complete in high school. Didn't help that I had undiagnosed exercise asthma at the time... not fun.

Inspired by my 8-YEAR OLD SON starting to run (and running his first 5K this Sat!!), and my sister who ran the Princess 1/2 this year, I started C25K in April. I'm now able to complete a 5K with 5min walking warmup at the start, and running the rest without walk breaks -- to the tune of a 11:30 pace overall (w/warmup).

My question is about next steps... I was looking at the C210K, working toward running a 10K (without walk breaks seems to be what the app trains you for). Assuming I live through that (!!), my question is what then?? Seems hard to imagine that I could run-only a whole 10 miler. But the short intervals that Galloway does seem unappealing to me.

Anyone out there running as much as possible of a 10 miler? What training program do you use? Do you take the "occasional" walk breaks as needed?

Thanks all!!

You should read my fall trip report. I don't know how you and your friends are, but I can tell you this ended very badly for me and mine. It isn't easy for a person who is not much of a runner to try to keep up with a faster paced runner and it is t fun for a faster paced runner to attempt to stay back.... At least I my case it wasn't. It didn't help that between us, one wanted lots of character stops and the other didn't care. Maybe if both had character stops as a priority the pace wouldn't have mattered.

If a decent time- not even a pr matters to you, I would suggest running on and meeting at the end. You all will have a better time if you do. :)

First of all, good for you!!! And it's not hard to imagine running a 10 miler. You can do it!!!:cool1::cool1:

I ran only the 1/2 marathon in January because I don't normally take walk breaks. But the forecast for the 1/2 was warmer than expected so I decided to slow my pace and stop for as many character pics as I could. If you want to try and run it all but aren't sure if you can, use those characters as a time to rest up.

I have never tried Galloway's method but I think if I want to do the marathon in 2015, I am going to use it to avoid injury.

As a total newbie, I'm wondering about this: how many run/walk vs. only run these Disney races?

I really can't imagine ever being able to run exclusively - my legs and heart are plenty strong, but I have exercise-induced asthma, too, and doing the run/walk intervals totally keeps that at bay. My intervals have been anywhere between :30/:30 - 1/4mile/1:00, depending on lung function, weather, and how I feel overall.

I think it entirely depends on the experience you want from the race. It would probably be a good idea to talk to your friends and see what their expectations are for the race, and if they match up with yours. If you are all ok with going slowing and stopping for each other as needed, regardless of time, then it would be fun to run together.

I have a trio of really good friends that I travel with and also run, and the running together question usually comes up before each race. I'm the slowest of the 4 of us, so slowing my pace to match theirs has never been my particular challenge. I always tell them, you're welcome to run with me at my pace, but you should feel no obligation to do so, and I won't be offended if you decide partway through the race that you want to run faster and leave me behind. Of the 10 half marathons we've run "together", 3 we ran together from start to finish (usually an attempt to help me get a PR, or if they were feeling like pushing it), 4 we started together and then split up during the race (once as early as .5 miles in, once as late as 10 miles in), and 3 we started in completely different corrals, and ran entirely separate.

So yeah, talk to your friends. That's the only way you'll know if running together is a good idea for you guys.

There are plenty of people who walk/run these Disney races, and plenty who run straight through. It just depends on your personal preference, and then how you've trained. And even if you want to run the race straight through, there's nothing wrong with taking walking breaks if you feel you need them.

I'm personally a run-only girl, but I've definitely thrown in walk breaks on occasion, depending on how I'm feeling. If I'm feeling great, running straight through is no problem. Sometimes, though, I'll take a walk break going through a water station, or while eating a gu, or halfway up a particularly strenuous hill. It just depends.

As far as training goes, I was a complete non-runner when I started c25k 2 years ago. After I finished that program, I switched to the Hal higdon novice half marathon training program, and I've been using different ones of his programs ever since.

Before I ran my first marathon I had gained about 50 pounds and not run in more than 5 years. I decided to run the marathon to give me a goal that required real effort to achieve. I wanted to be able to run as much of it as possible, only walking toward the end (if necessary). I made this decision only 5 months before the marathon. So, I went from couch to marathon in 5 months. I will link the training plan that I used. I ran the first 17 miles without stopping (or feeling like I needed to stop). After that, I walked/ran the remaining 9 miles and finished - but I hurt for a few days afterward.

You need to decide how hard you want to push yourself. To be able to run 10 miles straight through, you will need to put in more running days and miles each week than the Galloway plan requires. I have tried the Galloway method and it does not work for me, but I know people who swear by it.

I'm pretty type-A, and so I think I partially blame this for my desire to run as much of it as I can. I also want to be realistic about what my limits might be, and be mindful about taking breaks if I need to. Definitely don't won't to pass out on a long run, or something!!

If I do end up trying to run the whole thing, I can definitely see using character stops as breaks -- may as well enjoy the unique experience, right?!? ;)

Thanks again!! :)

Thank you so much for your insight as a fellow exercise-induced asthma "sufferer"!! I've found that on days when my allergies are bad and I'm running outside, my lungs are pretty... unhappy... by the end of a 5K. :(

Question for you... I use my inhaler about 30min before running and that has generally been good for a 5K. Do you use one, and if so, do you ever use it DURING a longer run as well?

Your thoughts on intervals are very helpful -- I will keep this in mind as I work on extending my runs -- thanks again!! :thumbsup2

Thanks -- this is great! So you went straight from C25K to Higdon novice... I was considering that... I'm going to give that another look. Thanks for the help!! :goodvibes
