Official 2013 Disneyland Dumbo Double Dare, Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k Thread!

Dumbo Double Dare runners: what's your plan for the back to back races? Are you planning to go all out for both or take it easy on one? I will really have a hard time not trying my hardest for the 10k but don't want to burn out and not finish the Half...anyone else struggling with this?

I am going to push it a little more than I normally do for the 5K (to be sure I start the 10K) and then I am going to go at a more relaxed pace. The middle third of the DL half is kind of boring, so I will also push it through that part to get it over with as soon as possible.

When I did Goofy I raced both runs. I am not a short distance runner though so I don't have a good handle on pacing a 10k since this will be my second one ever (18th 1/2 marathon though). I think I will run training pace for the 10k or slightly faster just to get my legs warmed up and then race the 1/2 as I am aiming for a certain time in the 1/2 and don't have a particular time goal for the 10k.
Depending on lines I may or may not stop for character pictures.

I'll be mostly walking due to lingering ITB issues. It's better- I ran a little today and didn't have pain, but I'm not sure I can do 19.3 running in 23 days!

Still sick and can't run. Starting to panic!

Get better--- that's priority! You can walk it if you have to. Just dont do it sick! Hope you are better soon!

Wow--so great to find this thread! This will be my first Disney race ever! :cool1:

I've cheered at Tinker Bell and Disneyland before (a lot of friends have done those races), but my first time on the other side of the ropes! I'm hoping the weather stays nice and cool on race morning.

I'm trying to figure out a fun but functional costume but I know time is running out. :hourglass: What are you guys planning to rock during the race?

Thank you! I am definitely going to try that, but right now I'm having a hard time with 5 miles. I think it's easier to give up at home then during a race, so I tend to realize I'm tired faster. I need to get over that quickly. ;) I think I'll push myself to try to reach at least 8 miles then either tomorrow or Monday. If I can do 8 at 4 mph, I know I can finish the 13.1. I've always impressed myself during my smaller runs with how far determination and adrenaline can get me when it means being swept or pushing through. ;)
Make sure you are hydrated and have a snack. Anything over 5 miles and I will have a Gu or fruit snacks or something half way. I only did 8 miles before my first half, so it is doable. Focus on 1 long and slow run/walk this week and next week, plus 2-3 shorter run/walks each week until the race.

I think I'll be walking the 10k, maybe a jog here and there to the next photo op. :) Depending on how I feel race day, I'd like to PR the half.

UGH! I have had IT band issues for over 3 years. I'm frustrated to say nothing has helped. I'm hoping my run/walk can keep it at bay for the race.

+ * + * + * + * + * + *
I ordered our 3-day PH tickets through GET Travel today!
And I now have all the pieces for my running outfits/costumes for the 10k and half.

That's my plan too~ take it easy on the 10k, maybe run the parts not in the parks at an easy pace and walk the parks and then race the 1/2.

You have to come back and report how the 5k/10k went for you. I really wanted to this year but wasn't sure and if it isn't too bad will do it next year.

Still sick and can't run. Starting to panic!

Get better and lots of Vitamin C!!

I do themed/accessorized running shirts and regular running capris. I ordered decals from etsy and just ironed then on and picked up some scrapbooking disney stickers at Michael's that went w/ the theme and stuck them on.

I think it is the TX heat and not the ITB :rotfl2: Cindy and I will be in corral E with perhaps some...fermented fruit juice to get us through the race...which of course means at least I will be doing much walking.

Perhaps the GC will make everything better !:lmao: at least I'm hoping it does for me !

Here, here!! The Fla heat has been killer for me. Coupled with the humidity and too much rain this summer, I'm lucky if I don't wind up in an ECV! Meredith is in corral E, as well. Oh Gmom, I really love fermented fruit juice, too! I'll throw in some running in the beginning and see how it goes!

I'm still pondering this myself. I know that even if I push it during the 10k, I'll still be able to finish the half, even if I have to to slow and walk a lot. But what I'm leaning towards is running the 10K at a comfortable to comfortably hard pace, and then trying to run the half at my normal hard half marathon pace. For me, that would mean 10 minute miles for the 10k and 11 minute miles for the half.

Of course, that could all change during the race! Who knows what will happen! :)

I'm still trying to decide if I want to do a costume, or make my own dumbo shirt, or what. We'll see!

I'm not planning on going all out for either of them this time. I tried to hussle through both the Tink & W+D last year but the crowds were just awful - ended up slower for the W+D than Tink even though I was better trained and had one under my belt. We'll try to get our pics done during the 10K (I'll be costuming) and take that a bit easier though I doubt we'll be comfy doing less than normal because I tend to get motivated when I see the clock ticking... either way I am going to try to chill out and not break anything. I've no doubt we will finish so I'm in this for fun! :thumbsup2

I'm planning to take the 10k nice and slow and stop for as many pictures as I can. For the half I'll try my hardest- I'm hoping for a big PR. :)

Thanks everyone for your input! I'm thinking along the lines of these ladies ^^^ because I also want to PR the Half...but I just know that the competitive bug inside me will go crazy if I take it easy on the 10K. For now, I'm planning to do my "long run" pace for the 10K and then go all out for the half...we'll see if that changes :)

My plan is to go absolutely crazy on the 10k trying to beat my high school PR, possibly to the point of keeling over, and then will probably suffer through the majority of Sunday as a result, trying to beat my course PR having put out an unreasonable amount of effort the day before. :lmao:

First of all, congratulations on stepping out from the sidelines! :thumbsup2

For this race my fiancee and I will be running out of Corral G as Piglet and Pooh [get-fit-Pooh, anyway]:
PoohandPiglet.jpg

We found the purple striped shirt on clearance at a local sports store, and I ordered my hat and red singlet (to wear over yellow fitted tech shirt) together for a great price from RunningWarehouse. I found a girl on Etsy who was able to make the custom Piglet ears, and we tweaked some of her bear ears to make them look a little more Pooh-like -- mine are on hair clips that I push through the ventilation holes in the hat.

We also like to stay functional, essentially coordinating tech fabrics with non-irritating embellishments to better highlight who we're running as; this is how we did it running as Donald & Daisy and Mickey & Minnie during the Goofy Challenge in January, and we had no problems with our outfits!

Do you have any ideas of who/what you might like to run as? Others who have tried running as characters might be able to provide some insight into how you could (comfortably) pull it off. Hopefully you can figure it out; but even if you don't, I think you'll still have a blast running through the Happiest Place on Earth with some great people and characters all around you! :goodvibes

Wow, thanks so much for all of the suggestions! I can definitely look out for a cool Piglet and Pooh! Congratulations on Goofy Challenge too!

My favorite Disney movies are The Little Mermaid and The Lion King, so I was thinking either Simba or Ariel (polar opposites, haha). I don't like to run with a lot of stuff, so something functional and easy would be great. I'll take a look at the places you mentioned for some ideas.

It's a lot of fun to check out the costumes on the course. One of my teammates is doing Goofy for next year and already has a costume ready for each race, haha. But she is much more experienced in the running/costume game. :)

That's cool! I've not seen any Simbas, but I have seen some Ariels out on the road that you could probably Google up pics for some ideas on how you might do it. Simplest is some kind of green running skirt or shorts combined with a purple tank or sports bra. I've seen some people combine the top with flesh toned material under, though I don't know where that comes from, or if those were maybe part of an actual retail costume. Some simple additions to cap off the clothing might be some kind of temporary washable hair coloring spray/chalk and a tropical flower or "starfish" hair clip. Try a Google image search for "little mermaid running costume" for additional ideas, and maybe check out Team Sparkle's running costumes page for ideas of how to use different materials and objects for this or other, future runs.

Simba could be a bit trickier, but maybe some clothing in a muted yellow or tan if you can find it. With all the crafty people on Etsy or possibly even in your local craft stores, you might be able to craft a headband with some lion ears and add some additional material to simulate a mane. . .:confused3
LionHBnd.jpg

A craftier person might have an idea of what kind of materials you could use to fashion a small tail, and if you could sew it to a clip of some sort, clip it to the back of some shorts -- or like we did for our duck tails as Donald and Daisy, we had ostrich feathers on a hair clip and then safety pinned the hairclip to the back of our shorts.

Hopefully this helps give you some ideas on where you could start with these or any other costumes between now and the race! One thing to keep in mind with costumes, though, is to try them out on a test run prior to the race to be sure that elements of the costume don't irritate you! If you aren't able to get something together before this race, just enjoy those around you and soak up the ideas for your next Disney race!;)

Hi there! I have been away from the DIS forever!! Stupid work getting in the way of my DIS time! Anyway, I'm in Corral G which is probably best since I really haven't been training. I did a 5k a few months ago, but have run very little since. I'm going to guess it's going to be a lot of walking for me!!

How do you know what coral you are in already? Or are assuming you are in G.

I was assigned H last year....right next to the pop's and it stunk!

Before our coral even got up to the start line in the half...now remember, we didn't even start the race yet! They announced that the first person just crossed the finish line!

I think we crossed the start line close to 630am...and were the last to cross in our coral...and right behind us were the balloon ladies!
