Official 2013 Disneyland Dumbo Double Dare, Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k Thread!

I banged my shin hard while riding my bicycle nearly two weeks ago and it really doesn't feel much better. Since the incident I've been resting, icing it and keeping it elevated with no relief. I have a bad feeling that I may have fractured it and made an appointment with my doctor this week.

Hope it's not a fracture and your shin heal's fast!

For those of you who have done back to back races, what's your strategy for recovery? The Dumbo is our first one, and I have no idea what to do on Saturday. Usually I soak and wear compression sleeves. Any advice is appreciated!

I pretty much do what you've mentioned. I bring my stick/roller w/ me and get a good rolling session in afterwards and a little at night before I go to bed to be safe. I go easy on the 1st race, not pushing myself so I'm ready for Sun. I make sure I eat something as soon as I get back to the room. All but one of my back to backs have been at Disney, so I usually go to the parks afterwards, but take it easy. For example, in DL I'll stick to one side of the park so I don't go back and forth. I'm usually back in the room around 2 to relax and pop my feet up on pillows.

Well I switched out my back to back runs last weekend with a 20 Mile bike ride on Saturday followed by a 12 mile run on Sunday. I liked the change of pace and will probably do it again soon. I still want to keep doing the back to back runs most of the time but the long bike ride with quite a few elevation changes gave me an awesome workout as well.

I bought the gold chear squad package for my parents. As I understand it, it gives them access to main street and to the finish line. Considering they won't have access to a car, and that it will take us between 3 - 3 1/2 hours to complete, will they have enough time to go to the Angel Stadium to cheer us on and be back on time to the finish line? If they do, what's the easiest way to do so?

Also, I found the final race instruction from last year and they talk about a heat index and displaying yellow, red or black flags if it's going to be hot enough. At what temperature do they display what flag and has it ever happened before? It's also written on there that if a black flag situation would occur that it would become a fun, untimed race. If it was to happen, would they still sweep?

I'm normally around a 13:40 mm, but it sort of scared me to see that...Thanks!

For Angel Stadium, w/o a car, it would be cutting it close. We're at the stadium around 9.5-10. If they do walk out there, the easiest way is Katella to State College and vice versa on the way back. That walk is about 2miles from the resort.

As for the flags, the only time that's been an issue is the 2nd year either '07 or '08. We had red flags and by the time I finished it was a tad over 100. B/c it was red not black, the clock was still going. But if it were to be black, not really sure b/c I've never done a race where that happened. I know they did that for the Chicago Marathon a few years back, but don't know what they did aside from the flags. In the past weather-wise, the next couple of years after that, we had beautiful coastal fog and then since then ~ no fog. As for the temps, some say warm, some say it's okay, it's all relative. :goodvibes The hard thing weather-wise is that it's CA and it could either be really nice or a heat wave could pop up, you really can't tell until race week.

Thanks a lot for the information. Do you think they would be easier for them to take a cab to the Angel Stadium and back? Would there be cabs available near DL that early and at the stadium for the way back or would that be more of a hassle?
Weather wise, I'm used to train in the humidity. Last year TOT it was totally crazy and I struggled through most of it, there was a heat advisory for PHM this year but I found the weather manageable so I guess I'll see how hot and humid compares to even hotter but dry.
As an indication, this weekend I did an 8 mile run under direct sun with very little shade, it was about 82 but with humidity felt more like 92. My pace was 15.24 mm instead of the 13.46 that I had the week before for a 10k.
I guess I'll have to really trust my training and that I will be able to maintain the 16mm no matter what and hope for a nice coastal fog. Anyway's how could I let anything, even sweepers, stand between that finish line with my first chEar squad ever and my dumbo medal waiting for me! pixiedust:

I know cabs are in the passenger drop off during the day, but race morning is different b/c of the road closures. Not sure about by the stadium either b/c I've always been running and we go a different route than the State College to Katella. They can call for a pick-up, I'm just not sure how long that takes. If they do decide to go that route and get a cab, it'll be easiest for them to get out at Katella and Harbor and just walk down Harbor to DTD and cut through. We come down Disney Way to the back of DCA so the cab wouldn't be able to take them to the passenger drop off anyway.

If you're running in 82 and humidity, you'll be fine! The only year I remember humidity was a few years back and it was only the 5k, no problem w/ the 1/2. And aside from the heat wave year, it hasn't been in the 80s while we run. During the day yes, but not while we're out there.

What do you guys think about the goodie bags? I sure would like to win the 200$ RawThreads gift card and the art card is pretty neat. Does anybody uses the Sparkly soul headbands? What do you think about them?

The race is getting so close!

Thank you so much! I'll let them chose that they want to do on that morning. I don't think they will want to be stressed out on that morning. I also think they'll prefer to take it easy and greet us at the finish line than waiting for us for hours at the stadium.

You make me feel so much better about the weather. My DH scared me by telling me that in the Palm Spring area (where we spend 3 days prior to go to Disneyland) it is going to be so hot that not much can be done after 9 am. In any case, I'll be used to the heat by race day and I'll make sure I stay very well hydrated.

Thanks again!

As a totally random aside for those looking for other stuff to do over Labor Day weekend in LA, DW and I will be hitting up the Hollywood Bowl again this year for the same concert we went to last year, John Williams: Maestro of the Movies. He conducts many of his famous scores, and this year his guest performer is Julie Andrews :cool1:, so that's reason #237486 why we're making a return trip. Playing both Friday and Saturday nights at 8pm (we're going Fri). Of note, he's 81 years old, so opportunities to watch him live will become even more rare (he only does this concert one weekend a year). Ticket range from $30ish to $50ish for some pretty decent seats, obviously more expensive ones to be had, and even cheaper ones, depending on your preferred bang for the buck vs proximity to stage. Highly recommended!
