I seem to have the opposite problem with my clothes. I pulled out my winter clothes and broke a zipper trying to get a pair of jeans from last winter on. I have lost about 5 lbs since I put those clothes away in the spring, but my clothes are fitting tighter... I'm thinking about trying to throw in more cross training exercises, and am really thinking about joining a gym. The treadmill is fine on cold or snowy winter days for a run, but I think I'll need a change of scenery from the basement from time to time.

Heather, are you building muscles in new places?

Pj

I ran about 6 miles today. Not sure what my time is since I accidentally hit the stop button on my Garmin when I was switching wrists. It only took me about 15 minutes to realize that it wan't changing from 2.4 miles. DUHH!!!

I am in some places. I know my calves are one area because I have a pair of skinny jeans that I wear with boots that I can't get over my calves now. They were already a little tight last year since they are skinny jeans, but now I can't get them on at all. I can't decide whether to be frustrated or excited... It's mainly my pants that don't fit, tops are fine and a little loose.

Hello all,

I will be running the 2012 Princess half marathon. I just started training this week. I am not a runner but I feel like it would be a great accomplishment to complete this race. I run about a 16:20 mile and a half right now...as of a month ago anyway. The most I have ever run is a 5K. I have not done that in a while but over the next few months I will be doing some here with my job. I just started the Galloway's training for beginners this week so I'm happy about that...that I got out on my own and ran by myself. Anyways, I'm so off subject!!!

I wanted to know if there is a fee for spectators to watch the race. Does anyone know? Thanks in advance AND GREAT luck to all running!!

Congrats on getting started and joining us!

There are so many places spectators can congregate along the race route. The only fee is for certain areas restricted for the CHEAR squad -there should be more info about that on the Rundisney site. I've not had spectators come with me so I will let others chime in on that one. I do know that they open the MK early and there is a special chear squad section, but they also let others in as well to view.

I ran 6 miles today for the first time ever (at age 43)! I did use the Gallaway run/walk with about a 4/1 ratio. Finished in 62:30, so not too much over my typical 5K pace of 10 min/mi. This feels like a huge step to me... increasing from 3 miles to 13 miles seems crazy, but if I can run 6 now, I should be able to train for 13 by February.
That's great! Keep up the good work :thumbsup2

Are you running the Nick Caldwell in Saint Albans? If so, maybe we can meet up before or after the race. :)
My SIL and I are going to sign up for the Nick Caldwell. That's so crazy to see someone else from WV doing the same race. We'd love to meet up with you too if you don't mind. We're actually heading down tonight so we can go to the Pumpkin Festival tomorrow. :goodvibes

Welcome! I am just starting out too and am not a runner by any means but there are a lot of us here that are just starting out and want to see what we're made of.

Hello Princesses,

I have been training using "Marathon and Half Marathon: The Beginner's Guide" by Marnie Caron and have been enjoying it so far. This plan works you up to running 30 minutes and then walking a minute for a half marathon. I've been having problems with my foot and shins since the mileage and running times have increased and have been thinking of switching to the Galloway plan. I just don’t know where to start if I do switch over. Starting from the beginning seems like taking a giant step backwards but jumping to the middle doesn’t seem right either. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks!

I'd love to meet up with you all before the race. Maybe we can line up together. I miss having a friend to start races with.

I would start at the beginning and see how it feels/ play with your pace. If it is way to easy skip ahead a week or two and try that out until you find a good fit for your current fitness level.
I am following Galloway's plan for timed goals for the Tinker Bell half and we are already up to 7 miles (week 4), so that may be something to look into too.

I ran 6 miles today for the first time ever (at age 43)! I did use the Gallaway run/walk with about a 4/1 ratio. Finished in 62:30, so not too much over my typical 5K pace of 10 min/mi. :cheer2::cheer2: Congrats!! I know when I was training for the princess last year I looked at 7 miles as a huge milestone since that would put me OVER half way there. It makes it all seem more manageable.
I do 4:1 also, but my long term goal is 10 min/mil. Right now my best is the mid 10's but normal is high 10's to mid 11's so hopefully I will get there before to long.

It was a great feeling just accomplish the 13 miles but now I am on to improving my time!

Keep up the great work!

That is how I felt too. My first half I did to finish, but secretly wanted under 3:00. I finished in 2:57:05, now for the Tinker Bell I want sub 2:30, and I am not sure about the princess. With them being back to back months I am thinking I may take it easy and hope for under 3 again, with some photo ops. :thumbsup2

Right now, my motivation is to fit into the size 13/14 jeans I bought from Aeropostale last month :rotfl: I'm SO CLOSE!!!!! I mean, I could wear them but I have a little muffin top, but I'm the type of person that I don't like the muffin top look, I just keep thinking I want to wear those jeans at least by February on our trip for the Princess, so that is my motivation ;)

LoL I am totally with you on the muffin top. I actually prefer my clothes a little loose so that I feel thinner in them ;)

I have a normal store pair of pants for a goal outfit, lol. Ok they are yoga pants but they are from a normal store, lol.

Pj

:thumbsup2

Thanks for posting the party in the park/race retreat info! Have these been offered in the past and if so, has anyone done either of them? I'm leaning towards the race retreat but keep telling myself it's silly to pay $99 just so you can have some flip flops and a snack :)

I reached double digits for the first time since March, when I was training for my first half. DH and I ran 10 miles last Sunday! He ran the entire thing:worship: I can't do that, but stayed with a 3:1 run/walk ratio the entire way. And felt pretty decent the rest of the day, even with a sinus infection! We are running a half in mid-November, and should be ready. What I'm not sure about is what kind of program I should follow between then and the Princess that won't wear out my ancient body parts but will allow me to keep a good level of fitness and peak again at the right time. Suggestions? It's almost 3-1/2 months between races - should I take some time off and start over? In spite of a nasty cold (which I firmly believe I caught at the doc's office when I went because of the sinus infection!), I've stayed on schedule this week, but haven't eaten well. On another note, I know food is expensive at WDW - is the pasta party worth the price? The menu sounds really good. Congrats to all you ladies who have jumped into your training programs!! As far as motivation problems, it's pretty normal for them to come and go. Right now the change to cooler weather is motivating me, as well as having a race next month. The cold/sinus issue is the drag and it's hard to fight that when I wake up feeling like cr*p. What about setting some short term goals to go along with the regular mileage increases? Like knocking 10 or 20 seconds off your pace for shorter training runs, or adding that to your run intervals if you're doing Galloway? Something that is achievable and will make you feel like you've accomplished something extra?

I'm sorry this post is so long!

I'm doing the same thing - a half on Tksgvg and then the Princess. So I kinda made up my own thing. After the Nov. half, I will take my training schedule back to around the 10K level and follow the Galloway plan back up from that point. I adjusted the plan a little to accommodate for the # of weeks between the races. I thought dropping back down to half the distance would give my body a nice little break for a few weeks before I started hitting back into double digits again.

Hope you feel better!

I guess I can officially call my self a runner. I have started to develop my first black toe nail. Well really it looks very bruised. I think it was from the end of my orthotic taking up too much space in the front of my shoe. Cut that sucker right down! It's so swollen that the nail bed is raised. I'm hoping it wil go down some before I run tomorrow.

Colleen, I could always run the next day when I bruised my toe, it fell off about 2 months (by that time a nail had grown underneath) after the 1st time I noticed it was really sore, which then turned out to be bruised when I removed my nail polish. No sore toes since I went up a half size in my running shoe.

Pj

Thanks PJ! I actually just pricked and drained some of the fluid out. Maybe not the smartest thing to do, but wearing shoes today just hurt and I was only wearing my Uggs. I would have worn flip flops but it was a little chilly. Any way it seems like the nail is not really attatched to the nail bed. I've lost toe nails before and it hurt like hell. Once as a kid my bike fell over and landed on my toe and ripped the nail out and a few years back DH and I were moving a couch (I think I was bare foot) and he pushed it back and jacked up my toe nail like the hood of a car. I don't think childbirth hurt that bad (well I did have the epidural for that). Hopefully I can comfortable get my shoes on tomorrow.

Colleen, I think mine came off easy since it was months after the injury and the new nail was 90% in, it is thin and lumpy but the nail bed is covered. I looked like it was just the edges holding it on my toe. This was the first nail I have lost, finger or toes, even after locking my thumb in a car door, oh my that one hurt way more then my toe.
